A twist on a traditional Abruzzese dish: Quinoa and Lentils. The annual Sagra delle Lenticchie (festival of lentils) takes place this weekend at Santo Stefano di Sessanio, in the province of L'Aquila. Read more about it (in Italian) on La Macchiarola's blog.

A palm near the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo
From the Facebook page of my friends at Abruzzo Presto: The Abbey church of San Giovanni in Venere, a still active (13th C.) monastery complex in the commune of Fossacesia, in Abruzzo, Italy. It is located on a hill directly facing the Adriatic Sea. The reference to Venus (Venere) derives from the presence of a pagan temple of the goddess on the site, which would have been built in ~80 BC. Photo credit Valerio Politi.
Hot in #Sulmona
We Abruzzesi ❤️ our peperoncino. The hotter the better.
If you visit Vasto, be sure to try a slice of pizza con la ventricina. Ventricina is a cured sausage made with cubed pork and pork fat and seasoned liberally with ground sweet pepper, ground chili pepper, black pepper and fennel. It is deliciously spicy and salty and beats pepperoni on pizza by a mile.

Welcome to Fontefico, a boutique organic winery owned by brothers Nicola and Emmanuele Altieri. The vineyards and winery are situated on 15 hectares (37 acres) between the Adriatic Sea and the Majella mountain range. The microclimate in this specific location is ideal for growing a variety of grapes ~ including Pecorino and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, according to the Altieri brothers. Only 3 hectares (7 1/2 acres) are cultivated, and the winery produces five wines: Pecorino Superiore, Cerasuolo Superiore, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Titinge Montepulciano Riserva, and Costetoste Aglianico. The latter is from a grape that is prevalent in Campania, south of Abruzzo, but does particularly well in Fontefico's microclimate.
Fontefico is on the itinerary for the culinary tour I'm leading with Abruzzo Presto at the end of September. Would you like a private tour at tasting at the winery? Join us! (only 2 spots left).
