“With the investigation going on at the school, apparently they don’t want people around the crime scene anymore than they have to. It’s not the best for the cops. They have to be able to work and figure out who’s doing this. But, yeah, I’m sure I can figure out a way to get the tumbling mats out.”

eli: seems i'll be out of school this week; parents are too concerned about everything going on. would you mind forwarding me the notes from history? still need to prepare for that test coming up when i get back to school.

katie: they're doing the best they can to be seen.

katie: yeah. i'll let you know if simpson makes any major changes to the policy on activities, too, but i doubt he will.

Standing up from his bed as Katie knocked on his door, Jake flashed her a small smile and shrugged his shoulders. “Don’t worry about it. It’s the least I could do and Clare was glad to have en excuse to get out of the house for once.”

He walked over to where Katie was standing and squeezed her arm gently, looking down at her with worry. Even though she looked better after the shower, he could tell that she was really tired. He couldn’t imagine what it must have been like to have police come at your house in the wee hours of morning and tell you that some kid on the party was dead, murdered in cold blood right under your nose. 

“I’m guessing you didn’t get much sleep last night,” he said, taking a few steps back to allow Katie into his room. The bed was unmade and there were some dirty shirts on the corner of the room, but other than that it was mostly clean and organized. Jake scratched the back of his neck and made a face as he mentally scolded himself for not hiding his dirty clothes. “If you want you can sleep in my bed, Helen and Glen are out as well so there won’t be any noise and I can scatter and leave you to it if you want me to.”

“Unless,” he added as an afterthought. “You are hungry, in which case we can figure some breakfast out. I have been told I’m an excellent cereal chef, although I know how to make some eggs, too.”

“There wasn’t really any time to sleep. People started to leave, the body was found, police showed up. It was a crazy morning, and it didn’t really get any better until I was able to get out of the house.” She was thankful to Jake for getting her out of there; glad that she didn’t have to sit around and listen to officers bump around her house, turning things upside down. There wasn’t anything to find there, but they were going to do it anyway. 

“Food sounds great, actually.” She said, realizing then just how hungry she was. Every room in her house was being fingerprinted, checked for possible clues, and looked over like it was the crime scene, and not the strip of grass between her house and her neighbor’s house. They were looking at anything and everything, going over every surface with a fine-toothed comb. Just the idea of it made Katie’s skin crawl. 

Her eyes were bloodshot from the combination of crying and staying up later than she should have, but if she slept now, she’d be up all night, and she didn’t want to be awake all night. Even if her house were full, she didn’t want to be up in the dark, in the middle of the night, in that house. Sure, the body was probably -- hopefully -- gone by now, but she didn’t want to be the only one awake in the middle of the night while images of the sight of it stirred in her mind. 

“You know, I think cereal sounds amazing. Better than anything I would have thrown together.”
