Imagine your son coming home on your birthday and being like “dad I’ve decided to start a strike with a cowboy I met yesterday. Happy birthday”
“I want this rabble he's roused to see what happens to those who would dare to hgheeeeeeee”
Let's not forget the women who brought us Newsies!
Noni White (writer), Peggy Holmes (choreographer), and the late and great May Routh (costume designer)
hope you're doing well! I have been kind of obsessed with your work as Jack Kelly Stories for a looong time, and I was wondering whether you had any plans to continue with that blog? This is mostly just complete curiousity, so feel free to disregard lol!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed the blog and hope to find time to update again some day. I appreciate your asking - nice to know that there are readers if I update again. 🥰

the trolley problem vs. systemic oppression: a comic.
Detroit Free Press, Michigan, August 29, 1939
Having a traumatic childhood means you cannot talk even objectively about your basic foundational experiences without it being "venting", even if you're not actually venting. You just straight up have a huge chunk of your life you can't talk about, full stop, without it being trauma dumping.
And it not being socially acceptable to talk about your own childhood is super alienating. Sometimes people want to know why, and any answer you can give them is going to be off putting.
It's to the point I get irritated when something I said is framed as venting when I'm literally just talking about my life experiences, doing my best to keep emotion out of it.
when I was in high school, I overheard two older students talking about a friend of theirs.
One of them said something like, "it doesn't bother me that [Friend] was in residential mental health treatment, I just wish they wouldn't talk about it ALL the time".
The other replied, "Well, that was all of last year for them. So when they say 'when I was in treatment,' it's like when you say 'last year'."
I try to remember that any time someone says something that sounds Shocking to me. sometimes one person's scary special crisis is another person's last year.
before you beat yourself up for not cleaning, ask yourself:
is there a proper place to put the things you're tidying up?
a lot of times i would find myself struggling to finish cleaning things when the real problem was that I didn't actually have a permanent place for things to go once I had actually picked them up.
once I was making sure I had shelves or bins or organization things first, it became a lot easier to actually finish tidying things up since I knew where things were supposed to belong
See that picture above? That’s a close up of my great grandmother’s immigration papers when she first came to the US back in the early 20th century. But my great grandma’s information isn’t the important part here. The important part is that line in the middle there about how they arrived in the country.
And how ‘stowaway’ is a legitimate, valid option to select.
So yeah. They absolutely just showed up, and that part of immigration history needs to be talked about a lot more.
REMINDER THAT TRAVEL VISAS AS WE KNOW THEM TODAY WERE INVENTED IN THE 1930S TO KEEP JEWISH REFUGEES OUT OF COUNTRIES THAT DID NOT WANT AN ‘INFLUX’ OF THEM, THEREBY FACILITATING THEIR GENOCIDE :)))))
read What is A Refugee for more history. Educate yourselves.
Yup. Mom’s side of the family came in this way. Just...wrote their names down and that was that.
The link doesn't work anymore, but for anyone curious: What is A Refugee is a book by William Maley, and you can find it on other sites (just don't buy from Amazon, please) or ask in your library.
Fish. Cheese. Gossip. Whores. War. The five nations lived in harmony, until one day, the war nation attacked. Unsurprisingly.
okay I'm sorry but I just have to say you are forgetting about fear, basically the most classic thing you can monger
