David: *picks up phone* Hello?
Jack: It's Jack.
David: What did he do this time?
Jack: No, I mean it's me, Jack. It's actually me.
David: What did you do this time?

ah, yes, Hard Promises
whenever I tell a story I feel like Uncle Colm from Derry Girls
“And that quote, “The only disability in life is a bad attitude,” the reason that that’s bullshit is because it’s just not true.” - Stella Young
[IDs: Screenshots from the late, great, Stella Young’s TED Talk: I’m Not Your Inspiration, Thank You Very Much. Stella is a wheelchair-user sitting up on the stage in front of a massive crowd. In these screenshots, she’s saying, “No amount of smiling at a flight of stairs has ever made it turn into a ramp. Never. (Laughter. Applause.) Smiling at a television screen isn’t going to make closed captions appear for people. No amount of standing in the middle of a bookshop and radiating a positive attitude is going to turn all those books into braille.]
I use this speech and the underlying theories a lot in my PhD, but Stella Young honestly had one of those voices that needs to be heard by everyone, so I figured I’d post my favorite part of the speech here. If anyone remembers that time I threw myself onto the floor For The Vine, you’ll know that I also hate the quote: “The only disability in life is a bad attitude”. Stella just conveyed the message with less pain.

Happy Disability Pride Month 2022!
When corporations inevitably try to commodify disability in the same way they rainbow-wash queer identities, remember that toxic positivity and overly-inspiring videos do nothing to address the real inaccessibility and discrimination that disabled people of all intersecting identities experience!
every newsies behind the scenes thing is like a shot of a director/choreographer like "christian bale came to rehearsal once a month and we got santa fe in one take" and it cuts to david moscow like "i wrote a personal apology to every vocal coach and choreography because i can't sing or dance" and then it cuts to christian bale like "i didn't know this was a musical but it is innit?" and then a cut to rehearsals with 100+ boys wearing the MOST nineties clothes you've seen in your life and a loud instrumental of carrying the banner plays

does this hurt y'all as much as it hurts me?
Imagine your son coming home on your birthday and being like “dad I’ve decided to start a strike with a cowboy I met yesterday. Happy birthday”
“I want this rabble he's roused to see what happens to those who would dare to hgheeeeeeee”
Let's not forget the women who brought us Newsies!
Noni White (writer), Peggy Holmes (choreographer), and the late and great May Routh (costume designer)
hope you're doing well! I have been kind of obsessed with your work as Jack Kelly Stories for a looong time, and I was wondering whether you had any plans to continue with that blog? This is mostly just complete curiousity, so feel free to disregard lol!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed the blog and hope to find time to update again some day. I appreciate your asking - nice to know that there are readers if I update again. 🥰
