How did Ron get his arm hurt?
Eleven year old Ron had collected the courage to talk to his mother about leaving. He’d taken it upon himself to stuff his clothes into bags and filled a box full of anything he wanted to take with him, and tried to convince Jessie to find somewhere else for them to live before Sam could get old enough to be hurt as well. Simply hiding from his father had only worked for himself for so long, after all.
As she unpacked his things, the pre-teen decided he would run away for his own protection (if she wanted to get herself - and possibly Sam - killed, that was her own problem.) It was that attempt to save himself that ended up leaving him permanently damaged. Too much of a wrench and pull of his shoulder as he was tugged and dragged back into the house from the porch, added to the beating that came from it, resulted in trauma and tearing of his rotator cuff.
To this day he can’t lift his left arm over his head, credit to not getting it taken care of or checked out at a hospital (for fear of not having a proper story for how it’d happened.) He’d iced it at home, per his father’s instruction, but it didn’t help. He found out a year later, for sure, during a routine check up and lied, telling the doctor it had been a sports injury that he’d neglected to do physical therapy for.
