PNW SPIRAL CULT CIRCUS ARE DANGEROUS ABUSERS
This callout includes sexual assault, racism, drug abuse, religious abuse, and cult behaviors. Spiral Cult Circus (SCC) is an abusive organization, until recently they were located in outer SE Portland. This callout has become urgent with the news that SCC has recently received an eviction notice and are relocating to new housing and looking for a foothold in new communities. Please spread this information far and wide to keep this dangerous group from being able to re-establish itself in your neighborhood or in Portland at all.
Most of the behavior featured in this callout is perpetrated by Katessa Harkey, Jonathan Mooney (La'anah Kimah on Facebook) and Sage Reilly (who has also gone by Cyndre Thourn). All three have their own callouts but we have decided to first contextualize their abuse in how SCC operates as an entity. We do not have a full list of current members but anyone affiliated with SCC should cut all ties immediately.
Spiral Cult Circus is a CULT
“Spiral Cult Circus” (SCC) may be a tongue-in-cheek name but that masks the fact that SCC is in fact a cult hiding in plain sight. They recruit by seeking out vulnerable members at their events and parties to “help.” They bombard them with kindness and acceptance until that person is emotionally invested and then turn toward gaslighting, verbal abuse, and other brainwashing. Members are often initiated into the group with ritualistic sex—sometimes including MDMA which creates a powerful emotional/chemical bond. Members are expected to be sexually available in exchange for care and access to information. Group drug use is also expected to facilitate bonding. Intoxicated people are often used in rituals that have been planned in advance by SCC leadership without the full knowledge or consent of participants. Group leaders are careful to be less intoxicated than other participants to preserve the power dynamic.
The concept of “consent” promoted by Spiral Cult Circus is a complete departure from the notion of sober, informed, enthusiastic consent. Members of SCC feel that by agreeing to consume drugs or alcohol, members consent to whatever else happens afterwards during their trip. This concept is frequently reinforced with the motto, “Buy the ticket, take the ride.” If members resist participating in drug use or being sexually available, SCC leadership becomes verbally violent including screaming, intentional misgendering, demeaning of intelligence, using misogynistic slurs and stereotypes, gaslighting, blaming survivors for their own past abuse, weaponizing knowledge of a survivor’s trauma and more. SCC also works to break up relationships in cases where a member is partnered with someone who is unwilling to provide sex or participate in drug bonding—or whose polyam boundaries don’t fit the standards of the twisted form of “relationship anarchy” practiced at SCC.
Spiral Cult Circus is RACIST / PROTO – FASCIST
SCC is a racist organization that sexually fetishizes people of color while denying their lived experiences of oppression. They use their sexual and spiritual fetishism of people of color to deny racism. They are culturally appropriative and have tried to host at least one Cacao Ceremony (a sacred, indigenous practice) for profit before being shut down by complaints. They borrow spiritual traditions indiscriminately because they don’t believe that there is a problem with cultural appropriation. They play people of color against each other and compare them, using the “angry POC” trope (tone-policing) to discredit those who have tried to speak against them. The leadership promotes the concept of “reverse racism” towards white people. They also have a variety of alt-right and white supremacist ties and beliefs; most notably to Augustus Sol Invictus. Katessa also circulated a petition by Richard Spencer against antifa. Multiple people of color people have been sexually assaulted by SCC leadership.
Spiral Cult Circus CONDONES AND COMMITS SEXUAL ASSAULT
Katessa Harkey has written prolifically about her views on consent, which are elaborate and convoluted justifications for abuse and assault. She also teaches “consent workshops.” She wrote a book, The Clearing of Consent, that she presents as an academic research project. A cursory reading of the book finds apologism including: a claim that 30% of the women she surveyed enjoy being pursued by people they’ve already turned down and suggests that it’s unfair to these women to disallow persistent, unsolicited advances from men in our communities; a disgusting quote by David Deida: “The difference between rape and ravishment is love”; and worst of all, a sympathetic interview with self-confessed, violent, serial-rapist, Ethan Edwards, to hear “his side.” In this interview she condescendingly refers to Ethan’s most vocal survivor as a “mentally unstable young lady.” Katessa told a survivor that their sexual assault by six people was consensual because the survivor had “chosen to be drunk.”
Jonathan Mooney (La’a nah Kimah) dated a 16 year old when he was almost 20 and groomed them for objectification while subjecting them to emotional abuse and gaslighting. He supported a rapist (who plead guilty) during his hearings and was part of a group that tried to sabotage the hearings and collect letters smearing the character of the survivor. This group also stalked and harassed Jonathan’s younger partner for not participating in the campaign. After the rapist was released from prison, Jonathan would still invite him to his parties where no one was warned about his history of committing sexual assault when drunk. Jonathan has fetishized trans women and referred to them by trans-misogynistic slurs. He gets off on lack of consent and coerced consent and manipulates people past their boundaries to do services for him. His close inner circle has included people known or suspected to be stalkers, pedophiles, openly racist people, misogynist people, and islamophobic people. Recently, Jonathan stalked one of Spiral Cult Circus’s detractors through a public space and physically menaced them.
Along with Katessa and Jonathan, Katessa’s close lieutenant Sage Reilly has a history of assault and abuse, misuse of substances, and of committing medical fraud. (Sage has claimed to be a Medical Doctor, he has had no medical training. Katessa has also been observed telling intoxicated young people she was an accredited Nurse) SCC leadership and events are repeatedly closely tied with local rapists, abusers, apologists, protofascists, trans-antagonists, and race-baiting antagonists. Jonathan Mooney currently works for Niyama lounge and herbal alchemy lab on N Beech in Portland and First Cup Coffeehouse on SE Woodstock in Portland and seems to be living in the Woodstock neighborhood, Katessa Harkey recently announced she is working as a creative director for Surrender Ecosex Convergence at Windward Education and Retreat Center, it is unclear whether she has relocated to Windward or where she will turn up next. Recent info suggests she may be houseless so please inform and protect members of the houseless community. Sage Reilly’s location and employment are currently unknown but likely local to the PDX/PNW area. Sage drives and sometimes lives in a large white Sprinter Van with tinted rear windows and some paint scuffs.
