Hello my name’s Corey Stanford. I had a rough life growing up—my mother put me in the home of the innocents when I was 6 years old, I was just a child right at Christmas time. She didn't say goodbye, she just left me there, and I still remember the gingerbread houses at the home of the innocents. Then they placed me in a foster home. There I was abused—I was mentally and physically abused, and sexually assaulted by the 18 year old son living in the same bedroom. After a couple years, my dad sold his house on a farm and worked 2 jobs to get me back. In the end, it paid off, but my mother never came there to visit me once the whole time I was there.
So after my father got me back, we moved into my great aunt’s studio apartments in old Louisville. My father was still working 2 jobs to make ends meet. After that, we moved around—I’ve been to about eight elementary schools. Then, when I turned 15, my dad had a double hernia so I started taking care of him. By the age of 16 I had to drop out of school because taking care of him turned into a full time job, plus I was working. Then my PTSD and depression started worsening. I was depressed all the time, having anxiety attacks, and a whole lot of flashbacks.
Now, today, I'm still taking care of my father and I'm trying so hard to find him help. I’m reaching out today with a heavy heart, and urgent need. My dad’s health and physical functions—COPD, almost complete vision loss from cataracts, arthritis where my dad can't hardly walk, he has fallen numerous times and hurt himself, and even broke his ribs from falling down, and he had Bell’s palsy a little while back that made his eye droop down—have made our lives an everyday constant challenge for both of us.
He gave me unconditional love and support for years, and now I am his full-time caregiver. Because of his serious medical issues, he can’t get to the doctor, the pharmacy, or even the grocery store without safe, reliable transportation. I can’t work a full time job because caring for him takes all my time and energy, especially as I manage my own battles with PTSD, depression, anxiety, and flashbacks.
I’ve set up a fundraiser called "Help Us Find A Home For Dad" and I'm asking for help to get a dependable truck or car, which will be our lifeline to medical appointments, groceries, and for essential needs. Every dollar will go directly towards gaining the transportation that could change our lives. I also need help with buying a house because my father and I have been homeless off and on for the last couple months, and my depression has been hitting me hard. I've been crying more because I can't do it on my own, and that's been every step of the way. I never thought I would be asking the community for support.
how are you doing
not so good
I'm trying to hang in there
