after around a year of flood induced turmoil, last week we got carpet finally put back in. some flatpacks and a bit of a longer break post school exams than intended, I'm back to studying! today: psychology, because that's what has the best laid out syllabus for blurting and I can't handle much more right now.
Hey Emma! I absolutely adore your blog💕 you’ve probably answered this but I haven’t found it, I’m just wondering what tips you have for motivation? I’ve got a couple due dates coming up and I honestly can’t find any motivation to do anything for them even though I know I have to. Thanks x
Hey :-) Thank you so much! But you don’t need motivation, you need inspiration and discipline :-) To put it simply, we can not rely on motivation for every element of our college/school life. Obviously and undoubtedly it helps tremendously but it can’t be relied on entirely. The best thing to do is to just start. We kind of assume we need some form of inspiration to motivate us into doing what we need. In some cases it works, but not always. When you don’t have that inspiration or desire, you can feel - as I think you might - like you have no motivation. Instead, you need to start by performing an action that inspires and motivates. This doesn’t have to be massive or time-consuming but just little bit of discipline and telling yourself
“what can I accomplish in 10 minutes”
“if I start this draft and make an outline, this essay will be much easier”
“this face/hair mask takes 30 minutes to work, how much off my to do list can I finish in that time”
etc!!
can help get you going, thus (fancy init) giving you inspiration and motivation. It works on a cycle and you have to keep it going. The reinforcement of “I’m not motivated right now so won’t work” is just going to increase your resistance further. For instance, recently I’ve been catching the bus and using that 50 minutes to do work. I finished (for the first time this term) all the work for my class 2 days early. Usually, I leave it till the night before but because I had spare time and thought I’d take advantage. I was on the bus, had 50 minutes to kill and thought I could do the readings to save doing them at home - the action. When I got home, I had already completed 1 and a half so I was inspired to keep going. This turned into motivation and I had it all done and submitted by 8!
You have to try and take control. You can start with super small things - and even things that aren’t study related. Sometimes tidying my room, having a shower or something else (without the distraction of my phone) can help me work through what I have upcoming. It gives me a chance to evaluate the things I need to start, complete and submit.
Another thing is to try to limit whatever is distracting you and causing you to procrastinate. If it is your phone, download Forest or let it run out of battery. If it is a family member, tell them you need to work and move to a spot they won’t be as distracting. You can’t make changes if you haven’t identified the problem :-)

HEY! This photo isn't very studyish but it’s got some study guides in it and I wanted to post here so it’s my excuse lmao.
Question: how do you deal with seemingly doing everything right (making to-do lists, setting timers, not using phone, sleeping and eating well, giving all attention to task at hand, taking breaks, meditation, the lot) but not ever managing to get any work completed before reaching a point of lack of focus where it’s pointless to keep going for the day? Send help :/

So I’ve been feeling really ready to Fix My Life recently but I’ve found it a bit discouraging not seeming to be able to do very much work in a day, regardless of how much planning I put in I can’t focus and end up having to put off 90% of my to-do list because I purely don’t have the time it takes to actually get stuff done. This is a cry for help, but I think it’ll also be a bunch of stuff I’m trying to do to facilitate an increase in work?
1. Tidy room, tidy mind
My whole house is a shite heap right now because of a flood meaning my bedroom is mostly devoid of furniture, flooring, and most of my stuff. However, I cleared up my floordrobe (floor-wardrobe) and brought in a tiny, soon to be thrown out set of drawers from the stash of our entire life in the garage to give me a surface other than my bed. I also stole my mum’s couch laptop desk to use next to my bed so I don’t have to use the kitchen table any more. It’s the little things! (i can’t wait for a complete recovery of my room though, I’ve been waiting since last october! Damn need for painting and concern for my sister’s allergies.)
2. Waking up early!
UnJaded Jade on youtube is the biggest catalyst for this one--for the last week or so I’ve been getting up (or trying to) at 5am. It’s been a bit rocky, but when I manage it it’s been invaluable to spend the time meditating and stretching. I’m also trying to use the extra private time to plan my day and then do school work--this week I am spending 6-7am (approximately, I don’t want to be too harsh so early) practicing writing for English class. If it works out (or if I think the reason it doesn’t is fixable) I’ll continue that, or else I’ll switch back to general whatever needs doing.
3. Killing that phone addiction!
Honestly, I don’t feel like I can take full credit for this but I’ve mostly stopped craving my phone, which makes it easier to silence it and leave it far away while I work to limit distractions. The only issue is that I then have to use my laptop for any timers, which is pretty fallible and I think I might work on keeping my phone close enough to use it when I need it, but not getting distracted at all by it.
4. Diet.
Today is a bad day for this, but in general I try to eat a plentiful variety of fruits and veg, as well as limiting refined sugars. I’m also vegan, but that’s not for health reasons. Basically, I try to fuel my body in the most healthy way possible in order to keep my brain #healthy.
5. Water.
I drink a lot of water. It does kinda get annoying because of all the pee breaks, but other than that I notice I feel a lot less with it when I’m dehydrated.
6. MAKING MY BED.
at this point, my choices are highly messy, distracting kitchen table or bd for studying so the most I can do is make my bed, put the wrong pillow on the top, and sit up with the laptop table rather than lie down or sit with stuff on the bed.
7. Planning work.
This one I’ve gotta work on, because I always plan but find it far too difficult to get any of the work done even if i sit down with it and try to focus.
8. Scheduling.
I thought this didn’t work for me, but i think this week I’m going to try it again because I NEED something to work. Exams are coming ever closer and I need to sort myself out!!!
SO yeah. This post is a bit of a mess so apologies for that, but I think it may have been helpful (procastination 100%) to do this.
I CANT DECIDE WHICH COLOR TO BUY
the black one looks cool and matches everything but is basic and almost everyone has a black backpack
the red grey one looks fashion™️ but i already have a gray backpack
and the yellow blue one is aesthetic but idk yellow? people here probably won’t get that
I kinda go in and out of phases of using this account (and every account except my main twitter, @ / mraawp TBH), and I’m getting real busy with school so it’s time for an acciosmarts phase i guess!!!!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again since no-one has yet given me a valid reason as to why James Potter, lacking a wand, didn’t just transform into Prongs when Voldy turned up and like… fucking spear him. Why didn’t he do that? Like I don’t care how astonishingly powerful a dark wizard he was, no-one could ever be prepared for walking into a house and there’s just… a massive fuck off stag staring you down? How could you possibly react to that?
You couldn’t, giving said stag the opportunity to put an antler through his eye and save the day. Not to mention, can you imagine the Prophet headlines if that was how it’d gone down?
How do I begin to communicate with people in my classes? Like you said make plans with them, eat lunch with them, befriend them? It’s really hard for me to put myself out there in the first place, and I guess that I’m just scared of rejection? How do I get over that?
hi hi anony!
sorry i got to this a bit late - honestly i had to think about it because i’ve never gotten this question! for me personally, i am an extraverted person, so talking to people has always been a strength of mine. but i can totally get where you’re coming from - it’s rather scary to initiate things.
i’m going to list out the steps i usually take - though of course, this is just me, and it honestly depends on the person i’m talking to and such. i’m afraid there isn’t one particular way of going about this… it just takes courage to take that first step.
how i make friends/acquaintances in class:
on the first day of class (or the first time i sit next to them), i usually say hi to whoever’s near me and ask their name, major, what year they are, where they’re living on campus, etc etc. just try to get a conversation going!
either during that conversation, after class ends, or at the next class (honestly it just depends on when i remember and how the conversation feels), i’ll just ask for their number! something along the lines of “hey, could i get your number? it’d be nice to have a study buddy and friend, and i’d be happy to share my notes if you ever miss class!” works just fine and in my experience, everyone has said yes!> !! NOTE: in your Contacts, take note of how you know them, so that later on you know who’s who c:
after that, send them a quick text and say “heyy it’s [name] from [class/club]! again, lemme know if you ever need anything!” so that they know who you are
and then… ask ‘em when they’re free!> if you have homework, just text them and ask if they want to work on it with you: “hey, have you done hw #6? i haven’t yet and i was wondering if you want to work on it together! or maybe we could check answers later”> if you want to grab food, ask if they want to join! “hey, have you eaten lunch? i’m thinking of going to xxx place in half an hour or so. wanna come?” works just fine
last lil tips:
don’t be afraid to initiate! in my experience, people like having company (i know i sure do) and it’s really nice to have friends you can rely on in your classes c:
don’t be offended if they’re busy - they have class and homework and clubs and their lives, too, so it’s totally understandable if they don’t have time. if you want, you can even plan ahead of time. let’s say they say they’re busy for lunch - maybe reply with, “oh, no problem!! dya wanna grab dinner together later?” or lunch tomorrow or something. you could even ask to swap schedules so that you know when they’re free!
hopefully that was at least a bit helpful!as always, my inbox is open and feel free to add to this! :D~Aisa
