The existence of this blog is not a claim of oppression or a minimization of homophobia. It is a collection of expressions of individual experiences by asexual people. Everyone’s experiences are different and some have faced significant consequences for coming out as this orientation. Your claim to know and understand the experiences of all asexual people as well as your insistence that their experiences necessarily minimize others’ experiences is illogical, bigoted, and uncalled for.

I miss you, what happened?

Hi! There are a few reasons why Ace-Comics hasn’t been updating:

Mod Burnout

There are a lot of ignorant and toxic attitudes toward asexuals, and looking for material about asexuality all the time inevitably brings one face-to-face with those attitudes. Between straight people who think asexuals are broken prudes and LGBT+ people who reject asexuality for any number of reasons, it’s a lot to deal with on a regular basis. I found myself shying away from direct association with asexual groups because of anxiety related to this hostility, and I decided I needed a break to calm down.

Personal Problems

There were several times in my absence period where I planned to or was even about to bring the blog back, but my personal life has been very chaotic over the past months. I live with clinical depression, and winter (which we are just now leaving where I live) is always worst for me. I also lost my dad very suddenly in mid-December and have been in mourning; we were very close, and though he was not a perfect person, he shaped my life immensely. In addition, I’m working on promoting my freelancing business, which takes much of my available time and energy. Limited time is also a problem because of:

Lack of Submissions

Thousands of comics surely exist online and in print that I have never heard of - how many of these have references to asexuality which the followers here would like to see? I only have so much time for research on my own. I’ve kept tabs on some gallery sites for independent work, too, but that only yields so many results as not everyone uses the same places or tags their work well enough to show up in a search. A blog without any new material isn’t going to be interesting or relevant.

That all being said, I would be interested in putting Ace-Comics back into action soon. I’d need more follower involvement and would request a little understanding if I am unable to keep up up regular pace of posting. I hope the blog’s silence hasn’t been too disappointing, as it was never meant to be a slight to its followers. I’ve just been dealing with a lot.

"The Oppression Olympics"

I just want to be clear, as far as I’m aware, nearly all GSM communities are very accepting of asexuals. The queer department at my uni is super accepting.

Just… every now and again it comes up that asexuals ‘aren’t oppressed enough’ to be queer, or to have a letter in the alphabet soup (however, allies WHO ARE HETEROSEXUAL are allowed???) and then there’s a huge long debate about it and it’s seriously peturbing. Not least because of all the erasure that goes on which is exactly the kind of thing we have the biggest issue with.

Anyway, some of my friends and I are running an asexuality 101 workshop in the queer lounge for Asexuality Awareness week and that’s why I drew this.

Based on past comics posted here, I feel there may be some disagreement on this, which is why I hesitated reblogging it (the artist submitted it) for a while. However, I decided I'd rather promote healthy discussion than silence people in our own community. Please be respectful to the artist even if you don't agree with their assessment of the situation.

Okay, I realize this hilariously late for Asexuality Awareness Week (which was last week), but due to unforeseen stressors, it didn’t really get done in time.

Anyway! I’ve wanted to do something like this for a while, and I’m proud of myself of actually getting a six page comic done within a week. (Not that it’s really anything super fancy, but it’s better than nothing lol) I do apologize for the massive ugly text wall that is page four but I had a hard time figuring out how to convey it visually while being kind of pressed for time. oh and the occasional copy/paste, I’m sorry for that too

"I don't talk about myself and my personal issues very much. If there's ever anything I need to get off my chest, I make it into a comic. I don't really consider this a "coming out" story so much as just a story that needed to be told. I still don't think it's a big deal or anything I need to proclaim to the world or fuss over, and this realization didn't really change anything about how I live my life or approach my relationships, but it did make me feel MUCH less self-conscious about certain aspects of myself. The artwork isn't my best, but I wasn't really focused on the art as much as just telling the story and getting it on paper. I wasn't even planning on posting it online, but I honestly like how it turned out, and I want to show it off."
