hey folks. i’m making another master list cause my first one ran out of links. i plan to add to this as i write more fics. 

anyway, here’s a quick lil cheat sheet:

The larger concepts are in bold—hurt/comfort, sci-fi, etc.

The title of each work is a direct link to the work itself. [I don’t title most of my works, so they’re just placeholders.]

the superhero universe

heroes and villains!

HURT/COMFORT

- a close call : stubborn hero and annoyed but caring villain; near-death experiences

-caged : whumpee villain and caretaker hero

-amplified : sensory overload/ panic attack

-selfless : injured hero, exasperated villain

-of trust and monologues : injured hero, annoyed villain; villain is concerned but doesn’t want to show it

-near the eclipse : in which the villain [almost] kills the hero

-breaking and entering : in which the hero wakes up in the villain’s apartment, bloody and near death; alternately: the hero cares too much about the wrong things, while the villain just wants a peaceful night to themselves..

-thunder & lightning : fear of thunderstorms, panic attacks; the villain just wants to know why their nemesis was missing from their scheduled fight…

-determination : terminal illness; “death isn’t something the villain has control over, but, damn it, they can’t just let the hero die…”

-mutual destruction : the villain loses control, but the hero has a plan.

- even villainy needs a break : the villain falls unconscious after a mission and wakes to find themselves staring at their enemy, the hero

-an unexpected reunion : the hero and the villain reunite at the villain’s… funeral? 

-unrelenting : in which the hero takes drastic measures to try to escape their captivity. their efforts don’t quite work and the villain is left as the one to pick up their broken pieces.

-the funeral : the hero’s agency stages a funeral for the villain. the hero is called to speak on the behalf of the “deceased” villain, only to realize that the thought of their enemy’s death is more troubling than they initially expected.

-house call : the villain shows up on the hero’s doorstep, bleeding and in disarray

-life or death : the detective wakes up mortally wounded on the city pavement. when the supervillain appears with an offer to assist them, they have to grapple with their pride and suspicion.

ANGST

-enough : exhausted hero, concerned + frustrated villain; hurt/no comfort, tension

-goodbye : hurt/comfort, lots of tension, coping with the loss of a loved one

-phantom pain : the villain is reformed into a hero. but their past—and their own villains—aren’t as far away as they think.

-forsaken mission : the hero is retiring. the villain finds them before they can leave the town.

-just a tool : the villain tries to break down their enemy’s walls, only to realize that their enemy doesn’t see themself as anything more than a weapon

-estranged enemy : hero’s parent is supervillain; their parent neglected the hero and disappeared, only to save their life years later…?

-missing : the hero’s teammates are incompetent and the villain is annoyed by it

-disappearing ink : the hero is tired and the villain is feeling mischievous

Someone just pointed out we see Cherry laughing without restraint in the OVA, before he met Adam, and that Cherry laughs like that again after Adam is defeated and Joe looks at him like he hasn't laughed like that in a long time I'm so I'm gonna break something

I think it's really important to remember that Sandman isn't just Neil Gaiman.

It's every artist who worked on the title, every colourist, every editor. 100 different hands worked to bring that story to the world for 70 issues. And it was all work for hire. The royalty checks have paid for people's houses, people's groceries, put their kids through school, etc.

So before you swear off ever buying a copy of Sandman or cancel your Amazon, Audible, or Netflix subscription or whatever just remind yourself that the cast and crew of the audible full-cast adaptation, The Sandman and Dead Boy Detectives and Good Omens deserve to continue living indoors as much as anybody.

Don't punish the entire world for the individual actions of one person. Hang on to the joy those projects gave you, the artists they introduced you to, the world that opened up for you once you were handed the key to that doorway. Keep the friends you made standing in the signing line at a bookstore. Cherish the first time you heard Tori Amos or the Magnetic Fields, or watched an Eddie Izzard special or Doctor Who.

Try to limit collateral damage as much as possible, and that includes to yourself. There's already so much hurt out there in the world. Don't pick your own pocket and leave yourself wanting.

Sandman+ deas boy detectives hell rant

Thinking about this scene in the sandman, where Morpheus said what makes hell as awful as it is is the prisoners dreams of heaven, knowing they will never get there.

Thinking about Edwin's first time in hell. What did he think about, for seventy years? I doubt he missed his life, considering what we know about them. What did he hope for, as an afterlife? Did he consider his escape as his heaven?

Thinking about Edwin's second time in hell. This time, he had something he loved, and people to miss. Edwin's hell was much, much more than the spider. Edwin's hell was the frightening knowledge that after all he went through to get out of hell, it only took seconds to get him back there. I think it's an excellent representation of how trauma works - it takes so much time and effort to go through with your life, but it can come back to you in the blink of an eye.

Edwin's hell was thinking he will never be able to confess to Charles. It was thinking he will never solve another case. Never banter with Crystal agian. Never watch another episode of scooby doo with Niko. Never seeing London again. Edwin built his own heaven by himself, so losing it was so much harder.

Edwin's reaction to Niko's death

Edwin not wanting to leave Niko alone, because when he died, he was left alone. No one stayed by his side, no one held his hand - in the original sandman comics, his bones stayed in the attic where he died. No one found him, and they didn't try very hard. He couldn't stand the thought the same would happen to Niko - that she would slowly decay in Esther's abandoned house .He was there for Charles as he died, and he wanted to do the same for Niko.

So this morning, i found (yet again) a bird in the kitchen. The little fuckers get in all the time, even when I'm certain i closed the windows. It's not even the same bird every time - there are several species hunting the apartment.

So, deciding enough is enough, i now have a plastic raven sitting on my window to scare away the birds
