SOPHIE shot by me in Glasgow - September 2019
As artists go SOPHIE was someone who would stand out for decades to come. An icon in their own right, through music they rebelled against societal norms and outdated standards of what music should be, gender binary and requiring an image to be attached with music.
They looked into the future far beyond where everyone else was capable of seeing. In their own words:
"There's a huge amount of work to be done culturally and socially.
The gap between where we are now and I imagine where we could be and the places that our imaginations can take us are so far away from what we're presented with a lot if the time."
SOPHIE was a driving force for the underground genre of electronic music that so many lgbtq+ kids relate to nowadays, they provided a sense of escapism from reality and isolation.
From their early releases as an unknown face with PRODUCT or PC Music's QT project, to their breakout Grammy-nominated LP OIL OF EVERY PEARLS UN-INSIDE'S; they crafted work that not only shifted electronic music, but challenged the pop music landscape as a whole with their inventive sound.
An Artist that loved texture of sound and pushing it further and further to it's limits: there is nothing remotely close to their skills as a producer and I'm certain there will be no one else like them.
Today we lost a visionary.
rest in peace angel, i will love you forever 💔
like it’s hard to overstate how much sophie’s passing means. she was a literal musical genius and an icon for trans and queer people. imagine being just 34 and you’ve released one critically acclaimed album, sixteen singles, and produced for madonna, kanye west, charli xcx, lady gaga, and a host of other stars - and you’re still underground. that’s incredible. imagine “bending music production so far that things stop sound like synths and start sounding like physical materials”. she was a visionary and laid the foundation of hyperpop and pc music, and the pop/musical landscape of the decade would honestly not have sounded the same without her. she was the blueprint! she inspired so many lgbtq+ people to become comfortable with themselves and to come out and live unapologetically. it’s so upsetting and such a loss.
