When people see my crochet things like my keychains they often ask me if they can buy some or that i should sell stuff i make.

I just politely declined but i wanted to think more deeply about it so here it is:

While i understand this is coming from a place of admiration and acknowledgement of value, i think it’s pretty rude.

I don’t want to be pretentious but firstly, don’t tell me what I should do, you don’t know better than I do. If I ever want to sell the stuff I crochet, I will. For now, I don’t take comissions. Maybe I will in the future but right now, I only crochet things I want and occasionally as a gift to people very close to me, as a sign of affection. That is why I’m not going to crochet something for a stranger who despite according value to my work, does not realize the amount of time and labour to produce a piece.

My second issue is with the monetization of hobbies and commodification of art. I would like to acknowledge my privilege in being able to have this discussion from the fact that I do not struggle with money so I don’t see the need for an additional source of income. I do have an issue with the idea that art can be possessed or thought as a material commodity. When thinking of art as an object in terms of value, price, i feel it looses its artistic essence. When a hobby becomes a job, you often dilute or loose the fun in it. You are contrained by what other people want, which restructs your creative liberty. You can become stressed because of deadlines or wanting to make your art as good as you can which inevitability leads to comparing yourself to others. Not everything has to be optimized. Isn’t the whole point of a hobby to destress and have an activity outside of your work (especially when you live under a capitalist system)? You are not entitled to own the product of my labour or the product of my creativity. The worth in a thing does not rely on the capacity to monetize it, on the capital it creates. I’m a human not a machine.

Make art because art is fun

Make art because that’s the deepest form of human expression

Make bad art

Art can not be reduced to a comidity

Machines cannot create art as it is a profundly human thing

The idea that art shouldn’t have a purpose past looks is rooted in historical classicism and misogyny. Historically, “high arts” (that only serve an aesthetic purpose) like painting were reserved to the elite who could afford it and women were often excluded too. The art done by women and lower class artisans like sewing or pottery were (and sometimes still are) considered “crafts” or “low art”. Some people using the excuse of functionality to say it’s not “art” despite the fact that they are as much an expression of people’s creativity and skills as other forms of art. Same goes for the devaluation of non western art being rooted in racism.
