My favorite frames from Garden of Words
In many of Shinkai’s films, sad endings resulting from misunderstandings and unrequited feelings are common. According to Shinkai, his stories are intended to encourage teenagers as they learn to cope with these commonplace experiences. In an interview, he admitted that he had been accustomed to being turned down by women, and felt that his stories were encouraging because his characters continue to try, despite being unsuccessful at love. The Garden of Words also illustrated how people do not mature as linearly or elegantly as we often assume. Shinkai himself could relate with Yukino in not feeling as smart or mature at age 27, stating, “We’re all still just children at age 27,”
The original idea for The Garden of Words came from Shinkai’s desire to capture the beauty of the daily scenery in modern Tokyo and showcase it in a film. Having lived for ten years in Shinjuku, he selected it as the location of the film and set about taking thousands of photos, upon which he created his storyboards. Wanting to share the peace and harmony of his favorite locations in Japan with the hope that it would encourage people to visit, Shinkai modeled the garden in the film to match Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Tokyo. Following the earthquake in March 2011, he was worried that it could be destroyed and wanted to preserve it in an animated film.

John Stortz is a 26 year old illustrator from the United States, specializing in pen and ink. He’s been developing his earthy and detailed style of drawing ever since he was young:
“[I’ve been drawing] since I can remember. I was a latchkey kid and an only child so I spent a big chunk of my childhood drawing by myself. I still really dig this drawing of an island covered in reptiles and birds I did in kindergarten. I think the main influences I had were these books on urban legends and monsters I found at the library. There was also this book about Greek and Norse mythology that I got during summer camp that I loved. It was filled with these beautiful and strange illustrations of creation myths and creatures. The other big influence was the sci-fi and animated films I’d watch with my dad.”

On forming your own idea of morality
Morality is not based on the occurrence of actual sentiments, which are non-
rational feelings we may or may not have. It is matter of seeing, a sort of seeing that is
a combination of intellectual understanding, appropriate feeling, and responsive
action, a sort of affective and responsive knowing. To learn to see justly and respond
appropriately is itself a training in morality. The reasons for moral action do not, from
this point of view, lie in sentiments people happen to have. They lie in forms of
apprehension and attitude, in seeing what is really there and, arising out of that
apprehension, in undertaking a commitment in appropriate response to what is seen.
