Report on Advert
My advert was based on the table top card game Munchkin where the idea of the game is to: Kill the monsters, get the loot, and betray your friends. So my advert was supposed to show the collection of loot by placing down the card with loot on it and then it appearing on the person who put the card down. And at the end have someone let off an arrow in the direction of one of the other players to insinuate the ‘betray your friends’ aspect of the game.
Overall I am unhappy with the turnout of my advert because when I came to plan it and work out shots that I wanted to use I was feeling that it may have turned out well but when it came to editing it all down to 30 seconds I had to cut a lot out. The rough script that I wanted to use was unfortunately too long, so I felt I had to ditch it and I never came up with a script for a voice over that I could have used. I also thought about using sound effects for each piece of loot that came into play but felt as though it sounded silly and non-appropriate to the design I was going for.
For the setting though I was fortunate enough to have my Uncle’s house free for an evening so it gave the advert a more homely feeling compared to if it was played in a flat or round a table at the library. This is was different to most of the other adverts that were shown because they were in people’s kitchens, so I feel as though this was a standout marker for my advert.
I didn’t really choose a theme though which I am annoyed with myself about because since producing the advert I have thought of an idea where it could have been 3 players walking out of a tree line with 3 sacks of ‘loot’ over their shoulders and being congratulated by town folk or a front page article on a fake newspaper. Using the Sepia filter to give it the ‘old timey’ feel I think would have been a good addition as it is a medieval age’s game.
The music that plays over it was played by me through my recording equipment so for that aspect I am very happy for how it turned out and David even commented on the music when I said I produced it that it was a nice touch.
Reaction to Feedback
I do agree with the feedback that I received from David Lyons about my 30 second trailer for the card game Munchkin. The advert didn’t really cover what the game was about but just showed an overview of people putting down cards and receiving loot. Since I didn’t use any extra sound effects or voice over then I can understand that it wouldn’t be enticing for people to play. I also did want to put a proper title card over the panning at the start but I feel as though I would need more time than 30 seconds to be able to justify having a detailed cutover of the games logo and title.
Feedback from David Lyons:
I didn’t understand the meaning of the game.
It didn’t make me want to play it.
Is there any of sound apart from the music? Could you have added Sound Effects?
Could you make a title card that wasn’t just a picture at the end?
Storyboard for the advert
