“Well, you know, cats are notoriously hard to find homes for. People can easily buy them at the pet store or open any newspaper and see ads for free kittens, so I guess they figure ‘why bother going here or to a shelter’. But I’ve helped find homes for a few, and I always try to get folks to consider adoption.” Yael gave a shrug, “And hey, not wanting to is a perfect excuse. I’m not going to force you to do something you’re not interested in so we both just end up getting annoyed with each other. And it’s just a picture, not life or death.”
Adam frowns as he listens, “Are they? That’s terrible,” he says with a frown, glancing around at the cats in the cafe, “I found mine, Cassiopeia was a stray who kept coming to my window. Maybe because I fed her,” he says with a frown, “And I found Desdemona as a kitten on the street. She was pretty sick, but,” he shrugs, “Adoption is certainly a thing worth pushing,” he affirms. He bites his lips and nods, cracking a small smile, “I’m glad to hear that. I’ll let you know if I change my mind. I guess I don’t like the idea of perfect strangers seeing my cats. I suppose the cats themselves couldn’t give a fuck, but,” he says, extending his fingers toward a cat nearing him.

“I didn’t intend on having more than two cats either, but then this happened,” Yael laughed, gesturing around the room to all the cats and kneazles who were playing, cuddling, or snoozing. “To be fair, only Boris and Natasha are mine. The rest are just here until someone decides to adopt them.” She gave a smile as she rang up his purchase. “That’ll be ten sprinks. And by the way, I have a little wall set up with photos of my customers’ pets. You could bring some in if you wanted to show off Cassopeia and Desdemona.” She nodded to a cork board full of moving pictures of animals, with their names displayed underneath. “But, like I said, only if you want to.”
Adam pulls out the indicated amount and hands it to her, nodding as he listens, “Oh, uh, I think that’s alright,” he says with a shrug, “I don’t really care to...I don’t have an excuse, I just don’t want to,” he says with a soft laugh, in spite of himself. “That’s a bad reason for anything, but, you know, if it keeps you from...doing dumb pointless shit then,” he shrugs and pauses, “I don’t know what I’m talking about. Sorry. How often do people come in and adopt cats here? Do you find they, uh, pardon the phrase, move quickly?”
Sorry, sarcasm falls out of my mouth like stupidity falls out of yours.

Yael was a bit surprised that he didn’t take her up on her offer, but she wasn’t about to turn down someone who wanted to pay. She just figured he was one of those people who wanted to feel like they were doing everything for themselves –including paying full price for coffee and cat treats– and she could respect that. She shrugged and went to pour his drink, speaking to him all the while: “Cats can be jealous like that, can’t they? Boris and his sister Natasha had a fit when I started fostering kittens for the local shelter, but they came around.” Yael smiled and returned to the counter with Adam’s coffee and a small sampling of treats, labelled with their ingredients. “These are all really popular with the feline crowd. How many do you have, by the way?”
Adam follows her to the counter, sauntering as he looks around at the cats playing, a small smile lingering on his face in spite of his normal demeanor. “Oh, yeah, I can see that. Cassiopeia, she’s the eldest, she was pretty jealous when I brought home Desdemona at first but she got over it,” he says, nodding at her question, “I just have two for now. I mean, I don’t intend on getting more,” he clarifies. Picking up one of the treats, he turns it over to read the ingredients, “They’re not that picky, so,” he shrugs as he pulls out his wallet, “I’m sure they’ll be just fine with this.”

11: Talk about the best dream you’ve ever had.
Once, I had a dream that I woke up and was taken away to live with my grandmother. She sent me to regular no maj school and we played chess afterwards. I didn’t know what no maj school was like, so, in my imagination, we ate crackers and read silently in different corners of the room. He thinks, hesitating before speaking, “Once I had a dream that I was a cat, and I had to scratch as many humans as I could. That was pretty great.”
19: Talk about a time you had to turn someone down.
“I mean, people offer you things all the time because they feel bad,” Adam shrugs a shoulder, “Just the other day, Davy was asking me to hang out with him and I turned him down. A woman at the laundromat accidentally paid for my laundry instead of hers and kept refusing to take the coins back. I convinced her eventually.”
34: Talk about the worst physical pain you’ve endured.

Yael tapped her fingers on the counter in front of the cat to get his attention. “Boris, roll.” She told him, having to repeat herself twice before the cat actually complied and somersaulted toward Adam. She smiled and fed him a treat. “A round of applause for the incredible Boris,” she said, once again slipping into her Russian accent as she clapped politely. “He’s here everyday, but he only performs when he wants to.” He was a cat, after all, and no matter how well trained, you couldn’t always get them to listen. “Anyway,” Yael said, turning to Adam, “Thanks for the donation. Can I get you anything? We have coffee, tea, pastries, even treats for your furry friends at home, if you have any. On the house, since you were so generous.”
Adam’s eyes widen even further as he watches, gently applauding at her command. He might not have normally, but, it was a natural reaction in the moment. “I’m certainly grateful he chose this moment. Cats are notorious for having a mind of their own, I’d expect nothing less,” he says, reaching out to scratch gingerly behind Boris’ ears. He turns towards her and raises both brows, “No, I’ll pay for it, thanks. I’ll have a black coffee. What sort of cat treats have you got? I’ll take a few, I’m sure they’ll be very upset with me when I come home.”
fidelius-x:
“Yeah, I like it up here. The view is great and it’s really peaceful.” Davy smiled again as he looked out over the crowd, but once again, there was a tinge of sadness to it. He didn’t want things to end this way with Adam. He didn’t want to accept that maybe they just weren’t going to be friends and that was that. He didn’t want to give up, but if that’s what Adam really wanted– “Hey, um…” Davy started, taking a deep breath, “if you really want me to just leave you alone forever, I guess I could do that. But for the record, I don’t want to. And I mean that, honestly.”
Adam frowns and nods, “I suppose I’ll have to sit it out, then,” it seemed cruel to make the other man sit there alone. And, while he had the capacity for cruelty, he largely tried to avoid the impulse. At the statement, he frowns, looking over to the other, “But why? I just don’t get it,” he shrugs, “I’m a stranger. I mean nothing to you. It’s just nonsense, and you should be able to see that.” He frowns, “All I’ve done is made you sad and upset. There’s no point in pushing it.”

Yael greeted the customer in the fake Russian accent that she often slipped into when introducing her animals, a habit she picked up from her Wixen Wonders days. (Acts were often more interesting if they were announced as forgotten art forms from the old country.) “Welcome to Crumbs and Whiskers,” she said, making a grand, sweeping gesture across the room. She then nodded to a large, fluffy black cat to her right. “This is Boris. He’ll do a trick for a donation to the local humane society. And for a treat, he’ll give you a high five.”
Adam stares at her, critical for a moment before he reaches into his back pocket to pull out twenty dragots, “I would’ve donated without a trick, but,” he says, speaking directly to the cat, “I’ll take a trick,” he says, reaching out his hand gently to allow the cat to sniff him. He extends the dragots to the woman, though his eyes remain on the black cat.

“I promise, it’s not some hero complex. I just like people, and I do like you. I’ve had fun the couple of times we’ve had the chance to talk.” Davy smiled, but it lacked some of his usual enthusiasm. For the first time, he was starting to feel discouraged with Adam. Maybe they just weren’t meant to be friends, and that was that. “Clue is like a detective game. You’re invited to a house party, the host dies, and you have to figure out who did it. It’s really fun. Betrayal is kind of similar, but one of the players turns on the group and the rest have to stop them. It’s also got more of a supernatural theme.” As he spoke, Davy scanned the ground below them. It seemed like a lot of people were migrating toward the street performer contest, leaving a wide open spot on the fairgrounds. “There,” he pointed. “You could probably apparate now, I think there’s enough room that you wouldn’t get splinched.”
“Sounds like one,” Adam says immediately, “I’ve given nothing for you to like about me, you have to recognize that. You have no reason to care, or to try and make yourself care. I suggest you stop.” At the description, he nods, his head turned slightly, “That does sound interesting. I wonder how you make a game out of that. Or, well, it must be extremely simplified, I suppose,” he says as he adjusts his shoulders, though there’s curiosity on his face. Looking down, he nods, “Good point. Are you...just going to stay up here alone?”
fidelius-x:
“I like you,” Davy answered. “And no offense, but you come off as kind of grumpy. Sometimes grumpy people just need someone to be nice to them.” It was something that his mom had always said to him, that those who are mean and angry are the ones who most need to be shown kindness. He didn’t know what was going on in Adam’s life, and he didn’t need to know– But it seemed like he was a person who could use a friend. He was determined to be that friend. Davy shrugged, “Anyway, I know Scrabble! It’s not my favorite… I prefer games with a story, like Clue or Betrayal. But we could totally play Scrabble sometime. If you want.”
“Why? You don’t even know me,” Adam says, frowning as he shakes his head, “It sounds like you like the idea of ‘saving me’, because you sure as hell wouldn’t like me,” he says, inhaling sharply as he sits back. “I don’t know what those are,” he mutters when the other continues, “I never really played games that often,” mostly because they required other people, “I suppose I enjoyed scrabble because I was good at it, unless she lost on purpose,” he muses and immediately regrets it. Perhaps the other would assume he meant his mother; it would be an innocent and understandable assumption. He straightens and leans back further, “How much longer until they fix this thing? Is this a form of torture?”
