“I’ve been going to these all my life. One gets used to it after a while.” She smiles before turning to face him leaning on the railing to give her a break from her heels. “What would you have done instead? to make it more entertaining I mean”

A retort about how boring that must’ve been a life led when the other woman said she went to these events all the time, but he kept his mouth shut. There was no reason to antagonize a stranger, especially a stranger that had done nothing wrong. Hopefully it remained that way.

Adam eyed the room casually. “A change of music would be nice. I get that it’s setting a mood and all, but it’s a pretty boring mood. Or anything loud would be better.” He shrugged. “Probably would ditch all the fancy-smancy stuff too. No one’s going to have that much fun if they’re too worried about spilling their drinks on an expensive outfit that’ll be worn once and tossed. Or the furniture. Man, can people talk about how precious the furniture is.” He rolled his eyes. “I’m still hoping that the night’ll get better, but if all I can look forward to is some firework display... Well, I could’ve just done that anywhere.”

Cordelia’s head lifted catching sight of the man. She couldn’t place him, but after all there were a few people here she didn’t know. She offers him a smile at the answer. It was sweet. He seemed like he was on the outside of their world. Atleast enough not to know about their battles. “Not really, its better to enjoy the event and the fun.”

“I guess. If you consider this to be fun,” he shrugged, speaking without much thought. He was sure the answer was lying in front of his face, doubting the words the other woman had to say, but it wasn’t his job to care. If anything, he was here just to show his face and to prove he was willing to put in some effort if it meant making Alexei happy. Adam hoped that would be good enough even if he knew that was likely not going to be the case. “I was hoping for something a little bit more... I don’t know. Entertaining. This isn't exactly my kind of scene.”

Cordelia was not surprised when her husband disappeared from her side. They’d done the rounds hand in hand, soft smiles and sweet touches. It was a rouse they had perfected over the years. It was almost second nature, comfortable.

As he shmoozed his way through the room, she found herself surveying the room, soft smile etched onto her lips. It was smart, gather 4 competitive families and pit them against each other for charity. She wished she’d thought of it. Snatching a glass of champagne from a passing waiter she stepped a bit closer to the tables. “Any idea who’s winning?”

Adam glanced around, tracing the voice to someone behind him. He didn’t recognize the woman who had spoken, but then again, he didn’t recognize most of the people in the room aside from anyone that frequented the Volkov clubs, and even then, that was shoddy at best, so he wasn’t really sure of how to respond to her question.

"Nope,” he said, answering honestly. He wasn’t even a hundred percent sure of what she was even talking about. “Should I? Know who’s winning that is.”

Astrid desperately needed some time away from her father. She had spent most of the evening making the rounds with him, greeting friends and partners on both sides of the family business, and now she could have screamed with the need of air. Her father’s presence sucked it out of the room, out of everyone else standing around him, out of her. And she was actually enjoying the gala, meaning that she didn’t particularly want her mood to be dampened so ruinously.

So she excused herself and made her way towards one of the smaller rooms, her glittering Elie Saab gown trailing behind her and her heels marking her steps. She sort of knew what she was looking for, even though she didn’t remember where exactly it was— there it was. A window seat with plush gold rose cushions and an amazing view of the city. Just the place to catch a break.

She had barely finished forming that thought when she noticed that someone else was in the room. And there goes my break.

“And here I thought I was the only one not fancying the selection of meats.”

Every minute that passed by was making him regret even coming. He was itching to ditch and find something a little more his speed, but who knew what the ramifications of that would be for him. Though he was beginning to doubt it would even matter in the long run if he stayed or not. Surely he didn’t need to show his loyalty and worth by being at some stuffy gala.

He wandered instead. It was easier. And besides, he still had a few places in the mayor’s home he had yet to check out. Adam was checking out the books on one of the shelves with a voice startled him out of his scanning.

Adam turned around. "What?” he asked out of habit, especially when he felt like he had been doing something he wasn’t supposed to. It took him a second to register what she had said, rectifying his word of surprise like he was merely joking. “Oh, right. Selection of meats. Yeah, no. Well no to not fancying them. I just got bored. Not of the food just of the... people.” He looked over at her, confusion etching his features. “You don’t like the food?” There was no reason to be shocked by the statement, but it colored his words. "I thought it was pretty good. But to each their own I guess."

It wasn’t that Ezra hated dancing. The music that thrummed up the floorboards, pulsed through the soles of his shoes, and vibrated his skin was simple to move to. The acoustics in the room were fantastic. Not that he expected any less from the Mayor’s estate.

He’d always simply preferred to watch.

It had always been profitable for him—observing. Pocketing slips of conversation and watching how the room shifted, those that gravitated together and those that kept out of reach. And he did so now, back to the wall but not quite touching, face flushed both from the warmth of the room and the slow burn of too much liquor, too little food. He never liked eating in large company. Even less with cameras about.

He noticed he wasn’t alone. And Ezra let out a slow exhale, the words following low in tone, the syllables soft and slow from the alcohol.

“Not planning on dancing?” That usually even smile was slightly crooked. Higher on the left, and it made him look equal parts smug and content. “Or do you prefer to watch?” The last word weighed heavier as it dropped from his tongue.

Adam hadn’t realized who had been standing next to until the other person spoke aloud. For a second he figured he must’ve been mistaken. While he and Ezra knew each other, they weren’t exactly a good combination in just about any social setting anymore. But nope, the man seemed to be talking to him, and the fact that he was did put him on edge the slightest bit.

“Not my thing,” he uttered out simply. Unable to stop himself, he fixed a look at him, smirking a second later. “Why, you asking for a dance? Because I doubt you’d be a suitable partner if your speech is any indication of what’d you be like on the dance floor.”

“Well, it would do you some good to stay sober,” he said firmly, before taking a healthy sip of his own. He wrinkled his nose, not at all appreciating the taste, wishing he had some whiskey instead. Could you request drinks at fancy parties? Dominik wasn’t entirely sure.

“Besides, I need something to take the edge off if I’m going to stay in this thing,” he muttered. “Why are you even here? Seems like a bad idea for you.” His eyes darted between all the drinks floating around the party, then back to Adam.

Adam rolled his eyes. He’d been pretty good about his drinking, and considering he worked as a bartender at a bar, he thought Dominik could give him a little more credit. It wasn’t as if he was planning on getting wasted here of all of places. Still, he watched the other man take a sip of the drink only to look grossed out by it. He snickered in response, muffling the noise behind his hand.

He glanced over Dominik’s outfit. “Could look worse.” In comparison, Adam’s suit wasn’t all that impressive. He had gone as simple as possible while still upholding the dress code policy, and he was honestly surprised they even let him through the door. “Nothing better to do I guess,” he answered, shrugging. “A.k.a., told to come so as to not be left to my own devices or some shit like that. Wasn’t really paying attention, but you know, they say ‘Jump’ and I gotta say ‘How high,’ right?”

“Well, I needed some excuse to detach myself from the arm of the dullest man I’ve ever met.”

Adam was a familiar face, at least, which was welcome in a sea of unidentified people. It was exhausting to socialize and network, figuring out who would be useful to her and who was a waste of time. “What about you?” she inquired, quirking an eyebrow out of curiosity. “You’re a long way from the party.”

“Ah, I see,” he replied, nodding his head. Adam didn’t need a moment to figure out who she was, he had seen her before. It was almost a relief to see someone familiar, if not for the fact that he had originally wandered off to be alone. At least Verity wasn’t the worst person he could’ve come across.

He flashed her a smile. “Oh you know,” he shrugged. “Just seeing what trouble I could cause before things kick off. Better to get it out of my system now rather than later, especially with so many guests around.” A chuckle left him, rolling his eyes at how ridiculous he sounded. “‘Course, never been here, so I’m mostly snooping.”

Verity ditched her date as soon as they arrived at the party. The man was boring to say the least. The only use he had was the plus one on his invitation. Some friend of the mayor who shared some sort of youthful story that Verity didn’t care to listen to. As far as Verity was concerned, he served his purpose and their time together expired.

After all, it was easy to get lost in a crowd of strangers. Especially when you tried.

The clock on the wall read 8:10. Verity watched as people stuffed themselves into the grand hall, mingling aimlessly until dinner was served. As much as she wanted to case the open bar and make an impression on the influential people in the room, she wanted to have a bit of fun first. What was more fun than exploring the home of the Mayor of New York?

With her coat checked, she went down an empty hallway, looking for anything interesting. After turn a corner, she let out a gasp of shock, her hand clutching her chest like she had a heart attack.

“Jesus fuck,” she said, not expecting to see another so far away from the party. “You just scared the living shit out of me.”

It was only ten minutes in and Adam was wandering away from the grand hall in the search of something more interesting. He really shouldn’t have come to this event, but the Volkovs needed to present a united front after all that they lost and apparently he was too much of a liability to just be left to his own devices at the moment. He might’ve felt flattered in the expectation that he would attend, but now that he was here it felt as if he was in a test he needed to pass. So he chose to take a detour from the mingling and schmoozing before that was the only thing he could do to win brownie points with the “important” people.

Adam had paused in one of the halls, trying to figure out where he should go when someone else appeared from around the corner. For a second he was caught off guard, but upon hearing her exclamation, he couldn’t help but chuckle. “Shit, sorry,” he grinned. “Didn’t realize there’d be others ditching the main hall already or else I’d have signaled or something.”

Dominik fucking hated this suit, its faint shimmer under the lights. He avoided wearing suits typically, but when he did, he preferred strict black or grey. The subtle glimmer was as opulent as he could muster, and he only wore it because Sofiya had bought it for him. It was embarrassing but he felt lost without her guiding presence, the spark in her eyes. He could feel his muscles tensing with anxiety underneath the god damned suit, and quickly grabbed a flute of champagne, out of the hands of someone who was about to grab it.

“I need it more,” he said flatly, staring the other down as he took a sip of champagne. Fuck. He’d forgotten how much he hated this champagne.

Adam doubted he should be here. It was a room full of temptations and expectations, but it was upholding the expectations part that made his fingers twitch in nervousness. He wanted a drink. He reached out to grab a flute from the trays coming around the room, but it was snatched out of his hands before he realized what was happening.

It shouldn’t have surprised him that Dominik was the one to steal the drink from him, but he still threw a glare in the man’s direction. “Bullshit,” he muttered, already looking for another server. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you drink champagne.”
