Life Lemons

This set is an obvious play off of the phrase "when life gives you lemons." Definitely not one of my tightest sets but I think that kinda plays into the whole underlying message that I was going for. Life lemons was partially inspired by this comic

The other half was derived from a Dave Chappelle set. I remember watching him go off about how people kept on giving him useless advice when things where blowing up around him. They would say stupid things like "you gotta hang in there and keep your chin up". A lot of the time we're told to make the best of a bad situation and that the only thing that matters is how we react to things rather than the events themselves. There is something un-empathetic about that kind of pep talk and it never sits well with me. it completely ignores the other person's emotional capacity to cope.

Despite one's best efforts meet the challenges (or lemons) that life presents and turn them into something better, sometimes the lemons still win.

Dare Devil Darla

I realize now that it's been quite some time since my last substantial post. These character shoots have been too far and few between for my liking, but there isn't too terribly much I can do about that. Many of the flaws of my past characters have been built into their appearance or just made very obvious. Darla is a slight deviation from my normal mode of communication, as her flaw is more situational. I believe we all have different sides to ourselves, one of them being the part of us that desires to be known and noticed, to explore, be adventurous, and so forth. Darla the Dare Devil represents the adventurous attention-grabbing side that exists in all of us. The one that wants to try things that scare us and have never been done.

With the new social norm of trying to justify one's existence by participating in weird fad internet hoopla (or whatever you want to call them… I’m sure there’s a much more succinct term, but I can’t for the life of me think of one that sums it up) we are straining harder and harder just to gain that millisecond of attention from whomever. Darla is my version of this existence justification. She has spent time and energy into developing her skills as a juggler, fire breather, and human cannon ball. Her flaw, or rather the twist in her story comes from the fact that as talented as she is, she lacks an audience. Therefore, she is destined to die a banal unnoticed death, same as any other talentless schmuck who never once stepped out of their comfort zone.

As depressing as I’ve made this write up, you’re free to draw your own conclusions about the photoset. While the images did not line up completely with what I had envisioned, I’ve worked very hard on it and I hope you enjoy it. Please make some time in the near future to pursue what scares you, not for the sake of approval from an audience, but for the gift of self-expansion.

I've been told people often don't understand the reasoning behind my images, hopefully this write up has helped in some way
