Book 10 of 2021: An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon. . Despite my problems with the narrative structure - which I found a bit jumpy and disjointed at times and I personally tend to struggle with those - this was a great debut. I also struggled a bit with the plot because it was a bit all over the place, which I assume was intentional on the author’s part to keep the reader on their toes. The world building though is incredible and the exploration of slavery, colourism, gender identity and queerness is phenomenal. I wish Solomon publishes a sequel in the future. Book 9 of 2021: On the Come Up by Angie Thomas. . I enjoyed this because Thomas focuses mostly on the internal conflicts of the main character and how her decisions affect her and everybody around her and still deals with a lot of racial issues that Black (and Brown) young people have to deal with in the US, especially in poor neighbourhoods. Bri is a teen going through a difficult time. She can seem hot-headed, opinionated and, at times, selfish but she is just trying to be herself, help those she loves and pursue her dreams of becoming a rapper. this is honestly so respectful! i feel like the length of the episodes on its own were completely fine only in comparison to nora’s I was getting somewhat sad, this explanation makes total sense

Some of you don’t get it. This girl is a young black lesbian who’s out here just living her life openly and freely. She has a black female best friend, wears her natural hair/ protective styles and is connected to her African roots through family and food. She also has a learning disability, accepts that things will be harder for her and advocates for herself. As representation for black girls/ women goes this is unreal! I have honestly never seen anything like it. This is what young black women deserve.

Book 8 of 2021: Estado del malestar by Nina Lykke. . This was a very interesting read. We follow Elin, a doctor who has recently separated because her husband found out she was having an affair, and she is now living at her practitioner office. The narrative goes back and forward. Back to understand Elin’s life and her marriage and in the present as she is going through her day as a doctor. On top of that, she is completely burn-out and pissed off all the time and tends to talk to the plastic skeleton at her office, which she has called Tore and acts as her conscience, telling her everything Elin is too scared to admit. . The author uses Elin’s patients as a tool to criticise certain aspects of Norwegian life/culture although some of them can be applied to the Western world as a whole and not just Norway. I will say a couple of moments didn’t sit well with me but I am not sure if it could be that there was something lost in translation, which could be a possibility. . Book 7 of 2021: The Duke and I by Julie Quinn. . What a disappointment. Picked it up because I wanted to watch the tv show. Went into it obviously not expecting a masterpiece but an entertaining, easy to read book. I knew I was going to encounter sexist remarks and was fully prepared. Nothing new really. But although the first half of the novel was enjoyable (I thought the family dynamic was the best thing about this book), the second half was a disaster. Not only the writing gets horrendous but there is also sexual assault and the character who does it faces no consequences. Book 6 of 2021: Encuentros con libros by Stefan Zweig. . First time reading this author and I really enjoyed his writing style so will pick some of his novels eventually. Obviously being this a collection of essays I enjoyed some more than others. I do have to say there is not a single essay on female writers or books written by women although I don’t know if the editor is to blame for that and didn’t include any or Zweig never wrote any. From these essays it transpires that Zweig comes from quite a privilege background. Book 5 of 2021: The Burning God by R.F. Kuang. . A fitting conclusion to the trilogy, and although it broke my heart completely, the ending was absolutely unavoidable. Mailin asking Ava and Fatou if they’ve experienced violence from a ticket inspector was too far. I get that she was trying to understand their experiences and educate herself but you can’t just ask about potentially traumatic situations so flippantly. I hope she becomes more aware and realizes she can’t expect her friends of color to discuss their trauma at her whim so she can learn. A good “ally” respects the boundaries of the marginalized people in their lives.

I don’t know what Druck plans to do with Constantin and this might be petty of me but I. DO. NOT. WANT. DRUCK. TO. REDEEM. CONSTANTIN. He is a piece of shit and I swear if they go with a sobbing ass story to justify his horrible behaviour I am outta here. The world has had enough stories about mediocre white dudes being forgiven for their terrible actions. Let him remain the villain.

Book 3 of 2021: Cluny Brown by Margery Sharp. • Really enjoyed this one. Very light and fresh comedy with a deep critique of English social conventions of the 1930s. Cluny is a girl who is not about to let others tell her what her place in the world is supposed to be and she does as she wants even when her actions are seen as outrageous by the people around her and she tends to get in trouble. Book 2 of 2021: Plain Bad Heroines by emily m. danforth. . Enjoyed it overall but was a bit disappointed since I thought I would love this. What I loved: the first part of the story and Libby’s storyline during the second part, as well as the atmosphere throughout. However, I expected more. I felt like both storylines - past and present - never fully came together and was left wondering what was the point of it all. I am not going to lie and say I am enjoying the subplot of the biology test in druck because I am really not... this is the second time we have some form of conflict in which Ava is the only one showing her anger (rightfully so) and the others keep trying to play the matter down and it is rubbing me the wrong way.
