Kit, you’re welcome in our home for as long as you are willing to stay,” he reassured the other. Kit had been through a lot and he knew how hopeless things could seem when life had been cruel. Still he wanted the other to know that their lives were better for having him in their home.

In the end, the carstairs made him feel like family and a home. This new baby changed things. No need for a surrogate child when you have the real one. The Carstairs owed a life debt to the Herondales and he would forever be there to watch over them, though forever was now a bit of a stretch as he was once again mortal. “But you aren’t just another mouth to feed Kit, you’re family.” The words were steady and sure, because any Herondale regardless of which line they came from was their family at the end of the day. Most likely even by blood since shadowhunter families were rather cross pollinated by this point in time. Even if that wasn’t the case him and Tessa were hardly the sort that would ever kick out a child just because they had another one on the way and the older one wasn’t theirs biologically. “And if you must see our relationship as a transaction then you should know that the Carstairs owe a debt to the Herondales that I have been repaying by seeking to keep them all safe.
