Summing up two years of service is close to impossible. It is hard to relate to our families and friends elsewhere about all that we experience as volunteers. Looking back, so much of what made my time in Senegal memorable exists in ephemera, little moments that stand out in routines incomprehensible to most Western audiences. A picture can be the best encapsulation of that, but even they they fail to capture context, or to convey the full memories that an image evokes. The relationship between memory and the picture is really only privy to the photographer themself. The rest, perhaps, is just aesthetics and whatever evident truth that lies in the frame. Here, three men stand at the end of a minicar heading from Ndioum to Saint-Louis. Behind the frame, there are almost two dozen volunteers leaving a summit and heading to the jazz festival back in April.
