She had to gently bite the inside of her cheek to prevent a smile taking shape. âAlways so full of yourself, arenât you?â Pausing at the door, she shook her head slowly. If there was ever someone with more of a flair for the dramatic, she would likely never encounter them. âWound you, or your   e g o? Itâs a miracle you havenât yet floated off into space.â Carefully, she pushed him back through the door and pulled it closed behind her.Â
As he spoke of being in need of a break from paperwork, Emmeline gave him a knowing look, nodding along. The Ministry had changed over the years; there was no denying that simple fact. Keeping up a charade, playing a part â it all got to be a bit much every now and again. âExtensive as it may be, itâs often a necessary evil. Imagine how many Muggles would suffer MORE damage than they should if you didnât keep track of who had been Obliviated?â She then thought back to one man in particular, who she had personally gone to help at least three times before the Ministry had done something about the wizards in Presteigne.Â
As they walked down the narrow, quiet corridor, her voice was barely above a whisper. It was more out of habit than fear that someone would overhear. There were times when she became so accustomed to the quite in her department that she was shocked by the volume of other floors upon venturing beyond the Entrance Chamber. âIâm not entirely sure. Something new, perhaps? Thereâs only so much of the same corner cafe that one can take.â
âWell, if it werenât coming from me, itâd be coming from other people. So really, whatâs the lesser of two evils here?â He remarked with a crooked grin. One of his on-going jokes; his adoring fans. None could ever compare to him, but shouldnât it be that way? In his opinion, you should be your #1 fan. Unless you werenât him, because in that case you should be his #1 fan and your own second. It only made sense. âMy ego could never be wounded, itâs indestructible. Though I know that will not stop you from trying.â
Nose scrunching up slightly at her logic, Edgar let out a tiny whoosh of breath. âNecessary evil, yeah. I know. I just wish there was a more ... simple way of doing it. But alas, itâs part of the job.â Their job would be a lot less hectic if things in their world werenât so upside down. There wouldnât be so many people to obliviate had Yaxley not taken over. It was a miracle that the muggle prime minister was still willing to work with them given the havoc death eaters was wreaking on his world, but alas - theyâd have to appreciate the connection while it still lasted.
Reaching the elevator, Edgar rang it to their floor before stepping aside, allowing Emmeline to go on first. âUnderstandable. We could wander, perhaps? Find a place neither of us have been to and just...give it a chance. The worse that could happen is that they donât have pie, and if so, weâll just blacklist it for the future.â
