I’ve never tried to hide the fact that Nite and Seymore were based on Kaos and Glumshanks from Skylanders. All the others started as OCs for Imaginators, but they are pretty passable as ‘just’ OCs. There would be no point in denying or hiding the fact.
I made Nite and Seymore for several reasons. I felt that with Glitch, I had a story and a universe I could expand on. Skylanders has a simple story, a simple set up, it’s easy to expand on this idea of a world, made up of isles in the sky. The social structure and the idea of the Academy being filled with outcasts, has really nothing to do with Skylanders premise itself.
I wanted to create something not related to a fan base. Not because there’s anything particular bad about the Skylanders fan base, that other fandoms don’t have.
I guess I never really thought about Nite and Seymore resembling their counterparts that much, because I already broke their characters so much. The resemblance, for me, was a dark wizard, which is pretty common, and a servant troll, which fitted into the social hierarchy in this world. Seymore’s artistic background is only similar to Academy Glumshanks.
I guess their designs could pass for a ‘stylistic version’ of their counterparts. I get the resemblance. While Seymore (and Glumshanks, for that matter) have a pretty common troll look, I tried to make Seymore bigger, in every way, and more roughen up. I made him older (looking), broke his nose and hurt his eye. I simply just made Nite more human looking. I made his nose bigger, removed his ‘make-up, broke his teeth. I kept having a forehead tattoo, but much more simple, making it a pun on his name.
I’m not trying to defend myself, because I don’t think there’s anything to defend. But I am trying to explain what I did, and why I’ve tried, to change them into other characters.
But I haven’t worked enough with them yet, it seems. So I’ll change their color schemes, I’ll change their clothes, but I do believe their build and face structure are pretty set. I don’t want to change their species. Mostly because I really want Aumar and Rosalind to stay the same, as best as they can.
I’m not mad that people tell me they look like them. But it saddened me that they didn’t look to see their differences as well, or try to suggest what could separate them.
The sketch itself is pretty rough.
I’ll try to do better.
