… 𝐨𝐧𝐞     ⎯ han aeran was born on january 11, 1998 as the local of town, yunhwa. both of her parents had been beekeepers and own a bee farm. she grew up helping them was expected to take over family business. however, aeran started to have another dream ever since she saw a ballet performance on television.

… 𝐭𝐰𝐨     ⎯ aeran often skipped her classes to practice ballet by herself on the school’s rooftop. she had arguments with her parents once they found out about it through her teachers and after a while, she decided to leave everything behind and follow her dreams. she left her hometown to go to seoul.

… 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞     ⎯ she attended an audition for a ballet school in seoul, earned a scholarship and started to work in various part-time jobs to survive alone. through phone calls, she made peace with her mother, however, her father refused to support her career as a ballerina.

… 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫     ⎯ aeran got injured on her knee during her first stage as a prima ballerina. due to injury, it became a challenge for her to dance, hence, her teachers suggested her to take a year-long break to rest before going back to school. thus, she found her way back to her hometown after four years.

… 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞     ⎯ due to her conflicts with her father, instead of living with her parents, she rented herself a small place. she also found herself a job in busan and has been working as a part-time parking attendant. thus, she often leaves the town in the early hours of the morning and returns at noon or goes to busan at noon and returns at night using buses.

… 𝐞𝐭𝐜.     ⎯ her blood type is b, height 5'7’’. not a big fan of cute things, however, owns a couple of plushies. her favourite pokemon is snorlax. used to be reckless but kind, now is a walking jerk that rarely cares about others.

 there  are  a  few  other  individuals  scattered  around  the  grass,  but  he  doesn’t  pay  attention. his  eyes  stick  to  his  message  beneath  formulating  into  something  not  sentimental. he’s  not  good  at  those  kinds  of  details. but  they  come  with  an  ocean  of  sincerity,  surfacing  from  the  trenches  of  his  heart. he’s  reading  his  things  over  when  he  hears  a  familiar  voice.

the  immediate  reaction  is  to  pull  up  the  wooden  block,  clutching  it  tight  to  his  chest  to  prevent  the  woman  from  uttering  anything  more. he’s  glad  it  wasn’t  her  letter.  the  knowledge  of  what  could  have  happened  makes  him  sweat  !  “  puberty  doesn’t  work  with  handwriting. ”  he  mumbles,  feeling  rather  embarrassed. but  it’s  the  truth,  nobody  could  ever  read  his  printing  at  first  glance. “  it’s  the  intention  that  counts. ”  

serim  pauses,  a  sudden  realization  striking  his  head. “  what  brings  you  here  ?  ”

            ゛       unconsciously, his reaction brought a small smile to her face. and the worst part was that it caught her completely by surprise. she looked at him not for any reason, just out of habit and noticed how long it had been since they had seen each other properly. aeran was way too surprised that she simply took a step back, did not even try to see what he was hiding. and she paused briefly before she pretended to be unbothered.

         ⎯  “ of course, the intention is the most important. but how do you expect people to understand your intention when they don't even understand what you write... ” she stated and she did not mean it in a bad way ( she was glad to see some things never change ). it was just a genuine question to understand his socialising skills. though, her curiosity vanished by the time he asked a question.  

fear was a phoenix. one could watch it burn a thousand times and still it would return to ruin and rise. and it was about to rise in her soul once again when the imminent question was directed at her. eyes widening slightly, her hands worked faster than her mind as aeran swiftly hide her hand, on which she held the thin slab of wood. she was not someone to feel embarrassed to write a note, she always carried artistic blood in her and did not hesitate to showcase it. the problem, however, was the content and the person it was directed at. the idea of serim finding out what she wrote to him simply terrified her.  

         ⎯  “ business, ” therefore, she replied in a presumptuous manner.          ⎯  “ festivals mean an increase in honey sales. i'm here for market research. ” her father was nowhere to be seen but aeran could see his disbelief as if he was there. anyone who knew aeran well would doubt she would ever bother to do market research ⎯ and she hoped, serim no longer knew her that well.          ⎯  “ how about you? ” she asked to change to direction of the conversation, only seconds after to notice the answer was quite obvious.          ⎯  “ right. i forgot you are friends with everyone. are you here to leave everyone a message? ”

 but  he  can’t  find  the  questions  dancing  on  his  tongue. they  clog  in  his  throat  instead,  then  crawl  downwards  into  him  because  her  words  imply  nothing. not  even  offer  him  a  sliver  of  a  hole  for  him  to  bury  his  thoughts  into  so  they’ll  take  form. what  replaces  the  moment  is  bamboozlement,  blinking  with  much  confusion.

 “  the  postman  ?  ”  honesty  is  both  a  virtue  and  a  fault,  leaning  towards  the  latter  in  a  situation  like  this. “  i  don’t  think  that  could  happen. i  moved  out  a  while  ago. over  a  year  ago. ”  he  hasn’t  seen  the  mistake  occur  even  once  since  he  left  the  house  into  his  new  one,  so  this  sounded  confusing. but  while  he  doesn’t  understand  what’s  going  on,  he  knows  how  to  be  optimistic  about  the  awkward  encounter. “  but  good  thing  i  was  visiting  and  i  saved  my  parents  and  you  some  trouble. now  i  can  pick  it  up  directly. what  is  it  ?  ”

            ゛       honesty was not always the best option as it sometimes acted like an insidious poison. crept between the words and made it hard to reflect acceptation. ⎯ and unfortunately for aeran, serim was the epitome of honesty. the bridge between his mind and tongue lacked a filter, and he always said what went through each corner of his consciousness. that naturally made it hard for her to come up with an excuse to dismiss the conversation. instead, she found herself pondering over her white lie and various options to disappear, once again.

aeran was not sure if serim was good at getting subtle barbs in. therefore, she did not bother to come up with yet another white lie. she had no intention to fight against his honesty with her own as well, as fire versus fire could create nothing but inferno at the very moment. her pride would not allow her to say she was there to bring him a gift ( even if that would save her from the trouble ). ⎯ yet, admitting that fact would be equal to admitting even after years, in another place and time, she still remembered him and their memories. thus, honesty was not an option that favoured her. not when her plan failed at the very first stage when her lack of research led her to learn just then that serim no longer lived with his parents. 

         ⎯  “ oh, ” came up a short sigh.          ⎯  “ i'm not a postman, who knows why he made such a mistake? ” her blunt tone sounded vulgar and repellent even in her own ears, which caused aeran to mentally flinch. yet, she managed to protect her posture calm outside and after a brief second of hesitation, she extended her hand to give serim the package.          ⎯  “ here, take it. ”

aeran had the perfect chance to walk away once she handed the package. she did not even have to wait once serim took the gift from her hand, a simple goodbye would be enough of a word to utter before she walked back to her home. yet, as aeran waited for him to take it, she also found a tiny nudge in her that asked her to stay and watch his reaction. would he like the gift? would he smile like he used to do when his gaze landed on something that perked his interest? would he remember the significancy of the song? aeran wished he did and it was that wish that made her stay there without saying anything ⎯ at least for a while.

         ⎯  “ it's no trouble, ” she said, clearly stating he would never cause her trouble. yet, instead of including that fact, she added:          ⎯  “ i doubt your parents would find it troublesome to deliver a package to you. ”

            ゛       the problem with wanting was that it made a person weak. and aeran was well aware of that as the more she wanted to rest the more she became weak under the weight of fatigue. it seemed like every time she tried to reach for an opportunity to rest for a while, either an hour or even a couple of minutes, the occasion slipped through her fingers and abandoned her with more responsibilities to face. that, she learnt, was the grim reality of adulthood and a part of the daily life of an employee. in other words, the situation had been part of her life for a while now, yet when she visited the ballet studio after a long day, she forgot everything else and imagined them to scatter like some kind of dust. on the present day, however, she had no escape but to walk between two destinations to survive.

the conversion of her shift somehow caused her to work at nights for consecutive two weeks. she tried to keep a balance and sleep whenever she could but once she became busy, caffeine became her only source of energy. and that meant, after a while, once caffeine lost the effect, weariness would hit her hard. ⎯ and it did, after a couple of days, one afternoon. fortunately, that also happened to be the day she could return home early.

the bus aeran often took from busan to yunhwa had not been too crowded. most of the time, she found an empty seat, settled there until the last stop and had a peaceful trip. that very day, however, it seemed like everyone at yunhwa had a business in busan and chose to return home at the same hour. ( or maybe, they were tourists that waited for perfect weather to visit the town ). in any case, due to the crowd, aeran found it hard to move around, she almost tiptoed to find an empty spot to stand properly.

holding the handle in a tight grip, she checked the time from her phone and let out a loud sigh of frustration when she noticed a long and tiresome trip to yunhwa awaited her. that was unless she found a seat to sit, of course.

            ゛       the idea of a wish tree terrified her. actually, just the idea of a bunch of people following some old tale that no one could ratify and making a tradition out of it put a sense of disturbance into her. as a local of yunhwa, it was part of aeran to know traditions, her parents made it sure that she grew up knowing everything about her surroundings ⎯ either good or bad. especially the incidents that led to festivals were celebrated in high spirits in the household of han family and festivals often meant sweets and sweets meant an increase in honey sales. in other words, traditions were welcomed by open arms as long as they meant business and aeran did not even argue with it. that was also why she would look at her reflection in the mirror, call herself a scheming face and then go out to help her parents sell honey. she would even utter creative lies about traditions just for tourists ( and sometimes locals ) to buy more honey.

those were all part of the past. she rarely helped her parents business anymore, did not utter lies to gain more allowance to counterbalance her ballet requirements. therefore, she had no reason to visit  namisan forest area or the wish trees in it. then why was she there with a  thin slab of wood carved in the shape of the yunhwa flowers in her hand? the old answers came easily to mind and hers stood in front of her eyes, lost in his own mind as he stood by one of the trees.

everything would be easier if aeran ignored hwang serim and leave before he noticed her. after all, she was there to leave a message for him but had no intention for him to find that out. that was why she aimed to write her message with her right hand ( even if she was left-handed ) just for him to not recognise her handwriting. yet, curiosity got the best of her and aeran found herself approaching him, peeking behind his shoulder to see what he was up to.   

         ⎯  “ damn... how come puberty hit your height but not your handwriting, ” aeran uttered as she looked at his messy handwriting.

            ゛       some people identified the name of a person as not what people called them but what the person answered to, which made quite sense. aeran had to admit. then again, there was the famous inscription of shakespeare that claimed a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but she had never been able to believe it. aeran simply could not imagine that a rose would be as nice if it was called a thistle or a skunk cabbage. therefore, names mattered, especially when a person's ears and consciousness were used to react to it. just like how she was used to hearing people call her aeran, her mails reflecting her name aeran, her coffee cup having her name on it ⎯ well, not anymore. unfortunately, ever since she began to visit yeyun inn frequently to get herself a cup of coffee, the name that was engraved on the cup did not reverberate her real name but the various alternatives of its pronunciation.

the very first time it happened, aeran chose to not mention anything. after all, she visited at a busy hour of the day and it was not abnormal for someone to get her name wrong. she was simply grateful to get her coffee without waiting for a long time. ⎯ and right coffee type as well. there was enough amount of sugar, enough amount of milk in it. there was nothing wrong with her order other than the "earan" that was written on it.

the second time it happened, the place was not as crowded as it was before and aeran had a chance to spell her name properly for the barista to hear. yet, her name was written wrong again. and the other day and another day. aeran visited the inn to get her usual coffee every day for the past two weeks and never once she witnessed the barista spell her name right. the present day, however, she was determined to get it right.

         ⎯  “ good morning, miss funny, ” she greeted the barista, whose name was sunny ( aeran learnt it on her third visit ) in a humorous tone. she did not mean it as an insult or anything bad, aeran just decided to fight against fire with fire.          ⎯  “ may i get a white chocolate mocha, please? ”

 his  footsteps  crunch  against  the  gravel  littered  soil  close  to  the  dwelling. an  unfamiliar  back  lingers  around  the  mailbox  and  at  first  he  mistakes  it  for  a  thief  with  an  old  target  choice. the  man  jogs  over,  ready  to  stop  the  robber. but  once  he  nears  he  catches  long  hair,  then  features  which  aged  with  the  turbulence  of  time  still  carry  the  same  dips  and  lines  that  once  aroused  adoration. his  second  heart  beats  a  lot  faster  until  it  soars  and  lodges  as  a  lump  in  his  throat. he  doesn’t  have  words  the  initial  flash,  only  letting  out  a  rough  cough. it  takes  another  moment  to  speak,  the  bewilderment  clear.  ”  is  that  you  aeran  ?  why  are  you  here  ?  ”  why  are  lost  emotions  arising  once  more  ?

            ゛       the familiar tone that called her name caused aeran to pause and almost freeze on her spot. her heartbeat rang loudly in her ears and she chose to believe it was because of her current situation ⎯ at least until she gathered her courage to tilt her head and look at him. 

there had been days she failed to forget him ⎯ and on such days she grunted in nuisance because there was no reason for her yesteryear to hunt her so effortlessly. it was almost discreditable for such emotions to root in her heart when she aimed to leave everything behind and focus on her values. art nourished through greed, forlornness and affection but even that did not explain the reason behind the image of his smile flash in her mind at unexpected times. why would she remember him? her answer came in a book she read.

many people would bring her flowers and tittivate their gestures with sweet lies. but one day she would meet a boy who would learn her favourite flower, her favourite song, her favourite sweet. and even if he was not wealthy enough to give her any of them, it would not matter because he would have taken the time to know her as no one else did. he did take his time to know her as no one else did, just like how she tried to know him. after all, the heart was an arrow and it demanded aim to land true.

aeran could hear the change in her own breathing when she faced him. even after years, it caught every time she looked at him, like she had never seen him before. that was the reason behind her brief silence before aeran, once again, noticed she had been caught in a bad situation, her plan failed at the most important stage. therefore, it was time for the contingency plan.          ⎯  “ serim, ” she called,          ⎯  “ how nice to see you here. ” well, that was not a lie.          ⎯  “ it seems like the postman has mistaken your address. he left your package in my mailbox and ⎯ ” she paused, her gaze moving towards the door before she met his eyes once again.          ⎯  “ i just thought instead of bothering you and your parents, i can leave the package here. ”

            ゛       the beliefs became one's thoughts. thoughts became the words, words became the actions and one's actions became their habits. and there was nothing more terrifying than habits as somehow, they blossom into substantial values. ⎯ and in a strange kind of way, caring for him was her value, an action of the old, conditioned mind pattern. there was a primal reassurance in knowing that her habit might curve the side of his lips into a small smile, pleased and pleasant. that whatever she was about to do would bring joy, not because of their previously shared values but due to his own interest and his own value. those were her reasons and excuses when aeran stood in front of a small antique shop to listen to the familiar sound of the violin, coming from an almost broken record.

perhaps, in another time and space, it would be nothing but a simple song that aeran used to hear. yet, ever since he played it on his violin to accompany the tap of her pointe shoes, the melody took the shape of something new, a sense of familiarity. hence, she failed to ignore it on her last day in seoul before she took the train to busan and later, a bus to yunhwa. there was no reason for her to get him a gift but she still did. aeran did not even know if he had a record player or if he was even still in yunhwa. his parents were probably still there though.

thus, she decided to deliver her gift a week after she arrived at yunhwa. there was no way for her to announce it was her gift to him, not after their last encounter. so, aeran wrapped it in brown coloured paper, attached the stamp of a famous television channel on it ( which took her a great effort to find ) and decided to leave it in his parents' mailbox for them to think hwang serim was a lucky winner of some show and got himself a record.

aeran wandered around their home for a while before she found the perfect chance to leave her gift in the mailbox. his parents seemed to be busy with their own business, there was no one around the entrance and the postman just left a couple of minutes ago. ⎯ and so, she tiptoed, completely ignoring the pain on her feet when she pressed onto it and quietly tried to approach the mailbox, unaware of the flaws of her not-so-perfect plan.

seojun in all honesty doesn’t want to tell this stranger the truth, at least not the whole truth. firstly because of the obvious reason of his secret… affairs of sorts, especially when it was very clear that the other person involved was very much in distress and uncomfortable when it was announced in the lady m blog — even when most people didn’t seem to really act differently around them, maybe yoosung —  and seojun knew how important it was that they kept it as a secret, especially when there could be the chance of them getting fired because of it. and secondly because it’s a little embarrassing, seojun can admit, that he was running away from a poor kid because he didn’t want to handle her teasing at the moment. as a grown up man of 26 years old that was a little embarrassing, right?

“right.” he says as awkwardly as ever, starting to walk to the bubble tea stand that is just a couple of minutes away from where they are. and he almost flinches when the stranger points out that she’s giving him time to come up with an excuse (or find his words to tell the truth) and that only makes seojun even more guilty about lying so that thought just escapes his mind before he can dwell too much on it. “actually i was hiding from someone.” the language teacher admits with a soft blush on his cheeks because here comes the tricky part to explain because he couldn’t just downright admit his secret affair that is secret for a reason. “they knew…” he gulps nervously, hands going back to the pockets of his light jacket. “a secret of mine and they’d tease me about it so i just.. i was running away from that.”

he doesn’t feel exactly lighter that the truth is out now, not when he still has to see what kind of reaction the stranger would give him, but the question of his name is enough of a distraction for his nerves to settle down even if just a little bit. “oh, i’m actually a local. born and raised here until i had to move out for university.” seojun says proudly. “i’m seojun, by the way, han seojun. i guess you also deserve my name after all of this.” he scratches his cheek shyly. 

“are you someone new perhaps?” seojun asks curiously, thinking that maybe that’s why they’ve never met before now. or— “but then i’m more of homebody than anything else, so i wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve never met because of that.” he adds playfully. 

            ゛       more often than not, aeran failed to understand why people were so bothered about the life of others when their very own life needed to be attended to by them. in a way, while one was too busy minding other people's business, who was busy minding theirs? unless, it was an extreme situation or an act of crime, poking one's nose into someone else's life was nothing but a waste of time. hence, once her companion, who she was slowly making acquainted with cleared his name, she had no chance but to believe he was not up to bad and was not part of a crime. therefore, she only nodded her head to show she understood and decided to make it crystal clear that she was not really interested in his secret ⎯ hopefully, that did not sound mean, ⎯ and would not question him any more.      

         ⎯  “ ah, that makes sense, ” she uttered in an understanding tone.          ⎯  “ sorry for doubting you. it had been a busy day, filled with unpleasant experiences, so, i just wanted to be sure you weren't up to something harmful, ” aeran explained herself before reassuring the other that he did not have to explain anymore.          ⎯  “ i won't ask anything else. your secret is for you to keep and clearly, you don't want to tell it. i'll pretend to not know anything and just enjoy the free bubble tea thread! ”

by the end of her sentence, she could only offer him a knowing look that hopefully, what he said was not just an excuse. then again, even if it was, he persuaded her to believe it. so, the problem was solved.

         ⎯  “ oh! i'm a local too, ” her voice became quiet by the end of her sentence but she managed to compose herself and keep the casual conversation.          ⎯  “ or i used to be? had been away for four years and it was enough time for certain things to change around, ” aeran offered him a small smile before she extended her hand for a handshake.          ⎯  “ nice to meet you bond ⎯ james bond,, i mean seojun. i'm aeran, han aeran. ”

her humour was not the best but still was better than nothing.          ⎯  “ a homebody, that's interesting. it must be so tiresome to wander around the crowd then, right? ” she added before looking around to see if they arrived at the bubble tea stall.

“you up for a hike?”

            ゛       walking had been part of her life from her earliest recollection. perhaps, it was a perk of her being a yunhwa native, where transportation was mostly done by manpower or maybe, it was just her career path, which was the ballet that made her feet and legs strong. as, even with an injury, she found no trouble at walking long distances without getting out of breath. hiking, however, was another story. she needed mountains as, the long staircases did not make good hikers. the problem was, she did not have any plans to be a good hiker but also, refused to admit the existence of frailness in front of the student-athlete.

that was how she ended in front of the naminsan forest area. blinding, mineral, shattering silence. she heard nothing but the quiet crunch of stones under her feet. getting to the top of the mountain was optional, getting down was mandatory. and so, she allowed a deep sigh to leave her lips before the colour of determination spread on her face.      

         ⎯  “ alright, let's do this, ” she announced before sparing the other a questioning look, her tone reflecting nonsensical humour as she added:          ⎯  “ are you sure that i'm not interrupting your rendezvous with the bear? unless you think that you need a chaperone. ”
