As I was trying to figure out what am I going to pick for my theory post? I thought what is something that describes one of our three theoretical perspectives. I picked symbolic interactionism which is defined as the how “a micro-level theory in which shared meanings, orientations, assumptions form the basic motivations behind peoples’ actions” (Conley, 2017, p.33). People see other with tattoos and immediately think oh they are not good news. Or employers see people covered in tattoos and they do not think about anything else.

When I was looking for jobs if you have visible tattoos you were less likely to be hired. It did not matter whether you had a perfect resume or you were a hard worker employer’s opinion stopped at your tattoos. If they did hire you all tattoos needed to be covered and not visible. In this article it showed females with and without tattoos along with males. It shows the ratings for social, dating, and business then their ratings after with and without tattoos. As expected this the person without tattoos has a higher score for both dating, social, and business combined. Each person gives a description on why their score went down and why. For Jake under business “dropped a decent amount (-33) with his tattoo sleeve in what’s supposed to be a professional photo.” (Medhora, 2018).

Businesses and society has gotten a lot better with excepting tattoos. Six years ago it was the opposite, businesses would have a tattoo policy where it was not tolerated in certain areas like the arm or leg even if it could be covered up. Those were social regulations “the number of rules guiding your daily life and, more specifically, what you can reasonably expect from the world on a day-to-day basis” (Conley, 2017, p.200). The older generation and businesses set those social regulations a few years ago because to the older generation is was frowned upon to have tattoos showing and companies have to worry about tattoos drawing away those customers.

I am glad society has changed on tattoos because I do not think tattoos shape a person. I have tattoo, they are not random tattoos they all have a meaning for my grandfather. Do not judge a book by its cover.

Reflections from a human rights doctor (guest essay by Dr. Hope Ferdowsian)

Everyone hears about the social movements for woman’s rights and rights in general for people but one social movement that may not be in the news as much is animal rights. The animal rights movement is very near and dear to my heart, I have had animals my whole life so this hits home. A social movement is described as “collective behavior that is purposeful, organized, and institutionalized but not ritualized” (Conley, 2017, p.704).

Animal rights is a topic that sinks lower than other on the list of social movements. This goes further than just house pet animals. Circus animals, Sea Worlds orcas, animal testing, and puppy mills. The small pools Sea World keeps their orca’s in is just not the equivalent to how much room they would have in the wild and to train them to do tricks is just not right. This has led to the orcas killing the trainers. I think it should be fair that for animal cruelty the person committing the crimes should get prison time and never be allowed to purchase an animal. The poor animal is not capable of defend itself other than biting but then it might make the person beat the animal even more. Crimes committed to people should be prosecuted the same way as people are for murder, assault, and running trafficking rings just like puppy mills. This could be described as a redemptive social movement because we are not just talking about one group to change we are talking about the circus groups, sea world, getting puppy mill systems closed and the people running it to be sentenced. Redemptive social movement is “social movements that target specific groups but advocate for more radical change in behavior” (Conley, 2017, p. 707). We need change for these poor animals and for people who do these horrible thing to be held accountable. In our efforts “SeaWorld finally caved to public criticism and ended its orca (killer whale) breeding program. This will be the last generation of orcas held captive by SeaWorld” (Bekoff, 2016). This news was a huge relief for animal activists everywhere.

This is a big problem and I think it should be advertised more in our community to raise awareness. Shop don’t adopt because you are fueling business for puppy mills and they will keep doing it to make money and leave the animals suffering. If you see something report it that is one way these horrible people will be caught.

Reflections

Wow the semester is almost coming to an end. I can now say I loved taking this sociology class, it has opened my eyes to so many different possibilities. At HACC I have had some bad experiences with classes but this was not one.

I really liked Professor Jacobson she was very helpful and detailed on how she expected things but also made us accountable for our work and due dates. I really liked in the beginning how she typed up a due date list on when things are due for each unit. Another thing was the prerecorded lectures, they really helped a lot because if I read everything all semester I would go crazy. It was nice to be able to sit down and listen to the lectures and if needed to watch them over again. Two of the units I really enjoyed was the globalization and social class, because it discusses current day events in the world closely related to our everyday life. I thought the t-shirt video was interesting how it went around the world whether it is inequality or McDonaldization.

Overall this class made me think more intricate and view everyone around me differently. There is no question I would take another class taught by Professor Jacobson. I already thought people may act rudely to you but you also have to think about what they may be going through at the time. I think a good video to show in the class is one my job showed at our orientation. It goes through a hospital and shows multiple people and says what they may be going through whether it be sad or happy everyone is going through something.

As for my career, I am at a cross road right now. So what I am going to do is finish my general educations classes and really think.

Dear Future Students,

Now that the end is near on our sociology class I have learned a lot about myself in this process. When giving advice to future students or even to anyone reading this post, everyone has their own way of doing things. After trial and error in school whether it was high school or college I have found that working ahead works well for me. Working a head even little by little helps me stay on track so in the end I am not rushing or cramming to get it done in a hurry. I realized when I rush on a homework assignment or project I do not pay attention to little details, and find mistakes later because I am just trying to get them done. Time management is a huge contender in any form of school nothing is easy unless you put your mind to it. Making flash cards is a good way also I have found and color code the flash cards. Last but not least read the text book put markers in for stuff to come back to and write down key notes to come back to.

Dr. Jacobson did I wonderful job responding to my many questions. I overthink things and need clarification to make sure I am doing what is assigned properly. Everything in this class is well put together.

Civil rights advocates say allegations of racially biased traffic stops by a Des Moines officer typify a problem that increases black prison rates.

I am not one to call cops bias or racist but unfortunately in our world today racism is still in our world today. Racism is defined as “the belief that members of a separate races possess different and unequal traits” (Conley, 2017, p. 325). It is not as bad as it used to be but it is still present. I think depending on an area cops can be stereotypical because they always have to be watching for certain behaviors or people that they have had run ins with. This case was sort of a different story.

In this case a police officer was taken to court by the suspects he pulled over for allegedly parking too close to a fire hydrant. Then the officer claimed he smelled marijuana. The search was inconclusive. Two men took Officer Thies to court saying he pulled them over because of race. Race is a term “a group of people who share a set of characteristic typically but not always a physical one” (Conley, 2017, p.324). According to the article the officer in 2017 “Thies was responsible for 253 arrests. About half — 127 of those arrested — were black” (Clayworth, 2019). Even with that being half it is still a lot of African Americans he arrested. The article refers to previous investigations with other officers that were then fired or resigned in civil rights cases. Other people that were pulled over by Thies were brought in and gave a testimony. I know there are a lot of racial profiling cops out there in the world but I think sometimes, not all of the time it has to deal with the area they work in. In the end “The court did not find Officer Thies’ testimony credible, and numerous times during his testimony the court observed that he appeared to be smirking” (Clayworth, 2019). To me that is a good clue that he may have been racially profiling these young boys.

Today is nothing like it was when MLK junior was alive, but there are a lot of people who are still racist towards African American but do not openly show it. One way it is publicly shown in our world today is when the person is a member of law enforcement, government, or public figures.

Two Walt Disney Studios employees have filed a lawsuit which claims females are being discriminated against.

There are a two movement’s currently going hand in hand right now in our world. Women’s rights movement which Cohen sides with pay inequality. Right now one of the most well-known companies is under fire for paying women less than men. Disney has just recently been sued for alleged gender pay inequality.

This issue is not just with Disney this is a wide spread issue where women are not being paid accordingly to what men are being paid. This is an example of feminism “the underlying belief is that women and men should be accorded equal opportunities and respect” (Conley, 2017, p.281). Feminism is also a big social movement protesting for our equal rights. In the work place talking about wages is frowned upon and some places of work will actually terminate you if they find that you were discussing wages. This could be a way to hide gender pay gaps. I know at my last job pay was a problem not for gender put in general people were talking about how much they were getting hired at and did not have the experience other people had or time put in at the business and were getting paid a good amount more. So people started to look for new jobs where they would get paid correctly and fairly. People can argue that men work harder than women but that is not a valid excuse because that is not the case. Not only are these two employees suing to “pay compensation along with lost benefits and other compensation” (Burwick, 2019). This is sad because along with pay they are not getting the right benefits as other do. They have both been with the company for eleven and twenty years.

In the old days there were gender roles. “Sets of behavioral norms assumed to accompany one’s status as a male or female” (Conley, 2017, p.289). Then one day women went to work. Women were no longer stay at home moms, their job was to cook, clean, take care of the children for when the husband got home. Women were now holding everyday jobs that some men would do.

Being a woman can be tough in the work industry these days but we as women have to stand up for what is right. Years ago women were told to stay at home and take care of the family, but this is not the case anymore. We now are able to do so much got to school get our well-deserved education, be in the military, and be someone’s boss.

Moving beyond the idea that sexuality and gender come in only two forms

These days our world seems to be all labels. It used to be gender male or female and that was it, that’s how you were born, and you liked a person of your opposite gender. Eventually times started changing and we started venturing into exploring other same sex and you would have to hide it because people would make fun of you or look down at you in disapproval. Now times have changed.

 In the last year or so I have noticed that people have been showing their sexuality which is “desire, sexual preference, and sexual identity and behavior” (Conley, 2017, p.281). I think this is because it is not looked frowned upon as much as it used to be. On top of people coming out with same sex partners, people are coming out with a sex change. Sex is defined as “the biological differences that distinguish males from females” (Conley, 2017, p.281). Females are now males and males are now females. I think around when Bruce Jenner came out that him and Kris Jenner were getting a divorce because he was changing over to a female by taking medication to change his hormones then later getting the genital surgery that no long made him male, but transgender. Children are really standing up for their rights in the LGBTQ community. In the article a student talks about coming out “Kyle Scotten, a 21-year-old from Texas who identifies as a gay man, says he did not come out until he went to college in part because attitudes were different even a few years ago” (Steinmetz,2017). This is a good example of what I talked about earlier. Kids could not come out in high school because it was frowned upon. I personally noticed as soon as I graduated high school I noticed kids I graduated with started coming out. Everything that is happening in my generation is not always accepted by the older generation whether it is the usage of marijuana for medical purposes or in this case sexuality. Harris Poll did a survey that more than three-quarters of the roughly 2,000 respondents said it feels like “more people than ever” have “nontraditional” sexual orientations and gender identities. But older Americans were more likely than younger people to say they were uncomfortable with those who “do not conform to traditional ideas about gender” (Steinmetz, 2017). This is usually how it goes because the older generation used to look at this a as frowned upon and now it is becoming more popular so they are not happy about it.

 From a sociological stand point, I think this is change some people do not support or agree with and people are upset because this used to not be a social norm. I believe that we should let people do whatever makes them happy. This is a free world and now that same sex marriage is legal it is even more free for the LGBTQ community.

If you live in Lancaster County most likely you know the smell as you drive through Hershey. The smell of chocolate takes over the air. The lights are chocolate kisses. Unfortunately, they have moved a factory south to Mexico.

The article ABC News talks about how most of your candy that someone is giving you for Valentine’s Day is coming from Mexico. Just like in McDonaldization they talked about expanding and making demand so they spread out to other countries to make more for less money. In the video we watched this week and readings we learned that labor is cheaper in other countries which makes for a better profit. As we move our factories to other countries this is globalization “the rise in the trade of goods and services across national boundaries” (Conley, 2017, p.263). This is exactly what we are doing right now. In the article by Chris Hawley he talks about the reason companies have decided to take business to Mexico. In Mexico, labor is cheaper than in the United States, sugar is also cheaper and they will get it quicker than waiting for it to be shipped. If you think about how much chocolate we use every day whether it is baking, making candy, or eating chocolate in general from the store. Chocolate is not the only candy made in Mexico. “Following the lead of companies ranging from Brach’s Confections, famous for its caramels, to Ferrara Pan Candy, the maker of Red Hots and Jawbusters” (Hawley, 2009). Along with factories moving to Mexico we have to also ponder how many jobs are lost with this happening. “the USA has lost more than 10,000 candy making jobs since 1997” (Hawley, 2009). It makes you wonder how many jobs have we lost after this article came out in 2009. This alone effects our equality of opportunity “the idea that everyone has an equal chance to achieve wealth, social prestige, and power because the rules of the game, so to speak, are the same for everyone” (Conley, 2017, p.245). When jobs move overseas we lose equality of opportunity, those jobs go to someone else. Those jobs help the people in that country but it takes away from the jobs here on home soil.

It makes one wonder in the future how many jobs are we going to lose to other countries because our companies here in the United States take business elsewhere for better profit.

Introduction

Hello everyone and welcome to my Tumblr blog name is Ashlyn I am going to tell you a little about myself. I am currently on my way to starting school next semester for Physical Therapy Assistant. At the end of my college adventure I want to go into animal rehabilitation. I have always loved working with animals manly more than people. I was born and raised in Lancaster County and go to the Lancaster HACC campus. One of my favorite things about Lancaster County is in the fall or spring going on walks either early in the morning or in the late evening with my dogs. The environment can be so relaxing and beautiful. I love going to the beach with my friends and family, we usually go to Wildwood, New Jersey. While I am at the beach my hobby is collecting shark teeth. One of the things I love about shark teeth is that every tooth is different and I believe it is the mystery of how big the shark was or is, if you have two or more teeth that you found could have come from the same shark. I not only collect ones that I found I collect bigger ones like Megalodon teeth. It is pretty awesome to hold something that old and huge in your hands and own. I enjoy cooking and watching crime shows in my free time while I am not working as a Phlebotomist for Lancaster General. I am looking forward to taking this class to better my knowledge. I also think it will improve my skills in the work place with patients! Looking forward to meeting everyone!

I read a long time ago that people will swerve more to hit turtles over snakes... and as a firm believer in the scientific method, I decided to test this hyp...

Have you ever come across an animal or snake along the road and felt the urge to hit it with you care on purpose? I wanted to take the humorous root during this topic and get away from all the seriousness of our world today. I chose this video because I remember watching this in a class I took in high school.

The experiment shown above by Mark Rober is a great example of social deviance which is defined as “any transgression of socially established norms” (Conley, 2017, p.191). In the video made by Rober, he chose to show an experiment which involved road kill or potential road kill. This showed how many people would go out of their way to hit an animal on the side of the road. This example is deviant but not criminal depending on the animal. An example not shown in the video is if there was let’s say a bald eagle sitting on the side of the road and someone drives by and intentionally hit the bird this would be an example of a crime “the violation of laws enacted by society” (Conley, 2017, p.191).Bald Eagles are a protected species if killed the person committing this crime will get a fine or even jail time . In the video some people went out of the driving lane to hit the fake animal on the shoulder of the road. Some people actually stopped to try to help the animal to the side of the road then realizing it was a fake animal. One person actually pulled off the side of the road. After realizing it was a fake snake, the driver started to take the snake and Rober who was doing the experiment was off the side of the road in the bushes yelled that it was his. The guy heard him and still proceeded to take the snake, which is a crime.

Overall I thought Rober experiment showed a good examples of deviance. It is not illegal but it is not socially normal to go out of your way to kill an animal.

Staying busy with friends, family and community groups appears to protect our memory as we age.

I chose this article by Harvard about how important socializing is even at an older age for your mental health and memory. Research findings are showing ways to delay memory loss by simply socializing more.

In the article Pope analyzes the information on memory loss in the older generation. Pope discussed some factors that come into play on a healthy brain. “Those who had the fewest years of formal education appeared to have the most to gain from an active social life as they aged. The study showed that the protective effect of social integration was greatest among individuals with fewer than 12 years of education” (Parker-Pope, 2008). Therefore, the less schooling you have the less likely your mind will decline. Socialization “the process by which individuals internalize values, beliefs, and norms of a given society and learn to function as a member of society” (Conley, 2017, p.118). Have you ever noticed children that are shy and will not talk to someone or have a hard time socializing? They usually have not been socialized with other children or put into social situations with others. Or when an older stray dog that has never met another dog may shy away or show aggression, it is because they were never socialized correctly as a puppy. If a person does not socialize when they are older they sort of go into a shell and do not want to come out or want to talk to other people.

Someone older should want to keep the brain guessing and active to prevent memory loss or deterioration. I would say this could be a form of resocialization defined as “the process by which one’s sense of social values, beliefs, and norms are reengineered” (Conley, 2017, p.131). If someone loses a loved one they can become depressed which could lead to not talking to anyone or going out of the house. This is an example of a situation of what can effect a person’s mental health. I know when my grandfather passes away I became depressed and did not want to go to work, let alone talk to anyone.

Right now I know there is not a cure for memory loss. Researchers are coming up with trial and error for treating Alzheimer’s and dementia. All we can do is train our brains and keep our body healthy in order to live longer and stay wise and stay socialized.

The Smithsonian is among several cultural institutions targeted over what activists call the family’s tainted donations.

Have you ever taken your time to go to a museum and looked at the names engraved under paintings or artifacts? One name that you might have saw and did not really notice has quite a few, is the name Sackler.

Author Sacklers generous donations were a consumerism “the steady acquisition of material possessions, often with the belief that happiness and fulfillment can thus be achieved” (Conley, 2017, p.107) for him he wanted to give back to the arts and people. Unfortunately, years later people are outraged by the fact that a man who has donated so much to the community of the arts, institutes, and education would create and lie about something that later becomes so catastrophic to the world. The Sacklers wealth all started by marketing and manufacturing of OxyContin. In America, you are more likely to die from an overdose of prescription pain killers than a car accident. They lied to the doctors when advertising and did not say about the potential for addiction and later death if it would be taken to an extent. Now people are outraged and do not want their art to be under that name and want the name taken off or even the donations taken down because they are outraged by the news of this. Protesters started by holding many protests at the museums”

The most dramatic of these recent demonstrations occurred last weekend, when viral videos showed hundreds of activists chanting “Shame on Sackler” inside the Guggenheim Museum as they rained fake prescriptions through the cavernous atrium, where empty pill bottles rolled on the floor in protest of the family at the center of the ongoing public health epidemic” (McGlone, 2019). I thought this protest was very interesting how they were throwing pill bottle everywhere. This could also demonstrate all the lives that were lost from the lack of awareness from the Sackler name.

When Sackler started out in the beginning I do not think he used ideology in the end he caused a huge uproar and a nationwide problem. “a system of concepts and relationships, an understanding of cause and effects” (Conley, 2017, p.84). If he knew what the medications withheld, he should have warned the doctors to in the end warn the patients also before taking.

The Smithsonian has a donation contract they withhold for this instance they named the building after Arthur in perpetuity for his generous donation. After this situation happened the Smithsonian decided not to except gifts in perpetuity. Some people even asked for them to change the name or even give the Sacklers their money back. You cannot categorize the family by bad or good some had no involvement in the lies and some did. It is a very awkward situation for the Smithsonian and other museums.

The influence of drug activity on crime rates is independent of a neighborhood's stability and socioeconomic status, according to a recent UCI study.

One of the widest spread problems in the United States and pretty much everywhere around the world is drugs. Some things that most people might not think of right away when they think of drugs is what drugs do to the surrounding areas. This is an example of reverse casualty “a situation in which the researcher believes that A results in a change from B, but B in fact is causing A” (Conley, 2017, p.51). This could go either way crime could come to an area and as a result bring drug trafficking. The reason I chose drugs as my research topic is because I am surrounded by the problem not only in my field of work, but in the city we live in.

Illegal drugs are not the only drug we are having a problem with it also comes from doctors’ over prescribing opioids. Which then the problem begins because they are turned around and sold. When people start bringing drugs to areas that maybe are not a drug area, you start to see a rise in the crime rate along with the drugs. Correlation is a word that could be used to describe the relationship between drugs and crime rate. Our book defines correlation as “simultaneous variation in two variables” (Conley, 2017, p.48). With drug usage and trafficking it will bring previous offenders or people who have not been caught yet. It will not only affect the area it is in, it will spider web and start affecting the surrounding areas. People are becoming braver and dealing drugs in the middle of the day or even at restaurants; which I have witnessed. “When police put pressure on one area, drug activity is displaced to somewhere else, along with higher crime” (Irvine, 2019). I think this is an issue that will never go away. In some cases, criminals go to jail for a sometime then once they get out of jail they go right back to it. For some people they cannot escape the drug life even if they wanted to or they would be killed.

Overall I thought this was a very good artifact to use because it shows views from someone in criminology and it is something that happens all over not just in another county. Drugs are bad where ever you go.
