Found at closing time (Pigsy & reader)
Type: found family, slight hurt/comfort?)
Characters: Pigsy, Tang, MK, Mei
Pairing(s): literallu everyone is platonic w eachother
Pigsy was never particularly social, but people watching was something he’d subconsciously partake in. He couldn’t help but note the cars that raced by, the noisy dogs outside, the neighborhood kids and their soccer games…there was always something new outside.
However, there was one person who remained constant.
The first time he saw you was when you were standing by the restaurant across his own, getting hollered at by an employee for loitering. Pigsy shrugged it off, thinking it’s just what teens do. ‘Some parents, letting a kid stay out so late…’
But by the next encounter, he realized that you weren’t quite like the other carefree neighborhood kids. A week after seeing you that first time, on his drive to work he noticed you sitting on a bench. ‘Hm, same kid.’ He thought.
On the way back home after his shift, he glanced out the window, and he was baffled at the sight of you on the same bench. His shift was twelve hours.
Perhaps you got up in between that long span of time…Though the fact that you were in the same clothes didn’t help your case.
For the following month, he’d catch you resting in unconventional places or getting kicked out for standing around. Pigsy hated watching people be rude, he wanted to storm in and give them a piece of his mind; but the noodle shop was constantly bustling with orders, he could barely manage a lunch break on most days.
Once he was certain that you were in fact homeless, the pig demon found himself waiting for you, keeping his eyes peeled for you. Everytime he’d attempt to bring you some food or just…approach you, you’d just happen to slip away the moment he stepped outside, completely unaware someone was determined to come in your aid.
You ended up disappearing for a long time, about a few weeks. he had no clue where you’d run off to, or if you were even somewhere safe. He could only hope you found someplace better to stay.
Despite that, he never stopped looking out for you.
“Thank you, take care.” Pigsy grunted as he waved off the last customer. The moment they left, his polite smile dropped instantly.
‘Finally,’ he thought. It was currently 10pm. After a tiring 12 hour shift, he was ready to clock out for the night.
The chef stepped outside to unplug the open sign’s lights, grumbling and struggling to rip it out of the outlet. Looks like it was jammed…again.
“Damn piece of junk!” He yammered, but paused when he heard the noise of rustling.
His head turned to the alleyway where the dumpster was; the noise seemed to have come from there.
Pigsy cautiously approached the back alley. When he got close enough, he was able to make out a small figure in the dark. A small, human figure. He let out a sigh of relief. ‘Phew, just a kid.’
“Heeey, kiddo…what’re you doing out so late?” Pigsy asked you, his voice soft. You looked up at him curiously, seemingly just woken up. When you shifted slightly, your face was revealed by the light.
He paused momentarily. 'Took you long enough,’
He noticed your scared expression and spoke up. “It’s you! I've seen you around this place.”
Upon your silence, the pig demon continued. “I, uh, you know…if you’re hungry, I’ve got some extra noodles out back…” Pigsy gestured to the well-lit noodle restaurant beside the both of you.
You looked up at him inquisitively; on one hand, stranger danger was a thing. Your gaze moved to the window of the noodle shop, where you could see the glowing logo. On the other hand…Pigsy’s Noodles…wasn’t this the place where the famous Monkie Kid worked?
“Okay…I’ll come inside.” You said timidly, standing up from the pavement.
Pigsy let out a sigh of relief, grateful he didn’t scare you off. “Alright, this way then.”
You were sat on one of the bar stools across the counter where the kitchen was. The moment you stepped foot inside Pigsy’s noodles, a feeling of comfort washed over you. Every other night you were cold with no company. Luckily, tonight would be spent somewhere warm and maybe even safe.
You were snapped out of your thoughts when you heard the clinking of a platter, and the pig demon from earlier walked in front of you. He set down a bowl of noodles in front of you with a fork. It smelled absolutely divine, and NOT because you resided by trashcans. This food looked genuinely good.
He murmured something but you didn’t exactly hear it, you were too invested in the noodles in front of you. It tasted like food from the pearly gates of the celestial realm!! Although, you felt kinda bad for just eating so you looked up at the chef after you ate like half of it.
You cleared your throat. “Um…thanks for the food…” You trailed off, glancing at the logo on the wall. “…Mr. Pigsy. Oh, and I'm [Name] by the way."
The pig demon looked at you from over his shoulder, he was washing dishes at the sink. “Of course, anytime [Name].” He said gruffly.
“Sooo, I thought you’d just give me whatever leftover orders you had. But this looks like you cooked it just now,” You smiled, making an attempt at conversation. “Did you do all that for me?”
Pigsy choked, quickly looking back down at the plate he was scrubbing. “I’ve seen you wandering the streets for a while now. Figured it’d be a nice gesture.”
“Oooh, well thanks for being so nice!” As you rummaged through your small bag, you pulled out whatever crumpled up bills you could find, hoping it would be enough. “Anyway, I hope this covers my meal!”
Pigsy turned around to look at the money placed on the counter and slid it back to you. “Oh, there’s no need, it’s on the house.”
“Whuh, really?” Looking up at him hopefully, you eagerly picked your fork back up. “That’s a relief ‘cause I think I only have enough to pay for half of this and it’s really good!!”
Pigsy chuckled, but as you continued eating, he felt a little saddened at the underlying implicit--you didn’t have much.
“I’m glad you like my cooking.” He looked to the side for a moment. “You know…if you’re ever hungry, you can always drop by here. Or if you need a place to stay.”
“Really? You give anyone free food?”
“Nah, just whoever needs it.”
“I’ll keep that in mind, thanks again Mr. Pigsy!” You said appreciatively and ate more of your noodles. Pigsy seemed kind under his tough exterior, so you wanted to continue the conversation.
“Um. If you had one wish what would you wish for."
He snorted. "Wh- I dunno, maybe a bigger house?"
"Woah do you have a family or something? If-If I can ask, of course!" You backtracked, not wanting to pry.
"Eh, something like that...What would you wish for?"
You thought for a moment. "Infinite money! Maybe I'd buy a ball pit with that, and a slide too!!"
His voice lowered and he said fondly, "You remind me of my kid."
"Sorry..." You froze, thinking you said the wrong thing. Pigsy stopped washing dishes, snickering. "Pfft—he's not dead or something, I didn't mean it like that!"
"Ohhhh." You stopped eating to laugh as well.
The two of you chatted about random things for a while until your bowl was empty.
After saying your farewells, you got up from your stool and Pigsy hurried around the corner of the counter to catch up with you.
“Sure you don’t want seconds?” At the shake of your head, his worry didn’t cease. “It’s pretty late out though, where are you gonna stay?”
You paused and turned to look at him. “I, uhhh…I dunno, wherever doesn’t get me in trouble for loitering?” You mumbled sheepishly.
“That’s dangerous, you don’t exactly know who’s out there.” Pigsy realized he might be acting too pushy, so he stepped back. “Look, I’ve got an offer for you…There’s an extra apartment upstairs above the restaurant. My delivery guy uses it, but he’s not here tonight. You can stay there if you’d like.”
You smiled in admiration of the possibility. Having a roof and bed was pretty foreign to you!
Pigsy grew anxious at your silence. “If you know who the Monkie kid is, that’s actually where he lives so it’s totally safe—“
“Yeah sure I’ll take it!!”
He relax at your agreement. “Wow. Okay. I’ll go…plug in the air mattress.”
It was pretty cool to be standing inside a micro-celebrity’s home. You gazed at the hero's stuff curiously. There were monkey cop posters lined up on the walls, monkey king figurines on the shelves, as well as a monkey plushie on the bed.
Pigsy groaned as he kicked away piles of comics on the floor while the air mattress inflated. “Darn kid, never cleaning up after himself…Sorry about the mess."
You giggled. “Oh my gosh are you the Monkie Kid's dad?”
“Yeah, I raised MK. But he clearly didn’t inherit my tidiness-“
“That’s okay!” You reassured. “At least he grew up to take care of others just like you.”
Pigsy froze, thinking about what you said. He never really thought of himself as a big hero, despite saving Megapolis countless times with his friends. Sure his fighting skills were good, but MK was successor to THE Monkey King, if not “the chosen one.” And that was great, he was very proud of his son. But whenever he looked at him, he just saw the baby he raised. It never occured to him that maybe, this heroic, pure-hearted boy was a result of his own parenting.
Until now, thanks to you.
A proud smile emerged on Pigsy’s face, and suddenly the air mattress looked real interesting. He looked away, gave the top of your head a quick pat, and muttered, “Thanks…kid.”
After he left, you were lying on the soft blanket and pillows he gave you. It was dark and quiet, but not unsafe.
‘It’s nice here,’ you thought. ‘I wonder why Mr. Pigsy’s so nice to me. Especially since he’s famous! Sorta…’ You realized you hadn’t heard of him often compared to MK the Monkie Kid.
You curled up underneath the blanket further, seeking its warmth. ‘He didn’t really act all snooty like a lot of influencers do. Then again…that’s probably ‘cause he’s not an influencer, he’s a hero! …My hero.’
Your eyelids started to feel heavy; For once, you didn’t have to go to sleep sad and hungry. You let yourself drift off into a peaceful slumber.
The next morning, Pigsy was whipping up dishes as people called in with their orders.
The thing is, he totally would've invited you to stay at his house, but he was afraid it would be too forward, why would you trust a demon like him?
It was also because MK was having a sleepover with Mei, and their hangouts tended to last 48 hours max. Partying all night, sleeping in all day--as useful as that was last night, it was starting to become more annoying by every passing minute. MK was late, and who else would deliver these noodles?
“Oh Pigsyy, where are my dumplings!!” Tang called obnoxiously from the counter.
Pigsy grumbled, carefully setting a bowl of noodles with some extra sauce packets into a bag. “Scram, ya freeloader! There’s already tons of orders and MK ain't even here to deliver ‘em!!”
Tang chuckled, he was just a ragebaiter at heart. Though, little did Pigsy know, MK was not far from arrival.
Upstairs where you were sleeping soundly, the window busted open and MK slid on the floor. "And he sticks the landing!!" He got up and dusted himself off, shrinking his staff.
"Morning, plushies! And good morning to you too, random kid on my extra mattress! Oh, oh, and good morning to...wait…”
The hero paused and moved his gaze from his stuff, to the dozing teenager in front of him.
"AAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!" He shrieked, before realizing you were sleeping. His voice lowered into a whisper-yell: "I gotta tell Pigsy!!!"
Somehow, you didn’t wake up when MK tripped over his comics or slammed the door open. Or when he stomped down the stairs, screaming all the while.
“PIGSYYYYY!!!” MK stopped in his tracks with an abrupt screech, Pigsy fuming in front of him.
“Goddamn it MK!!! What is it?! What could possibly have you making such a ruckus! You’re gonna wake up—oh.”
The steam coming from Pigsy’s ears evaporated as soon as he realized the real issue. “Yeah, so. About the kid.” He smiled diffidently.
“What kid?” Tang chimed in.
"G'morning Mr. Tang!" MK waved to him and the scholar waved back, while Pigsy took a breath.
The pig demon took the next minute to explain you were a homeless teenager he’d been noticing for weeks. How he saw you sleeping in strange places, but never somewhere comfortable, and you were always alone.
“And I let [Name] take the room upstairs ‘cause you weren’t home. I was gonna wake the kid up before you came, but I figured you’d come later.”
That wasn’t the full truth; you just looked so relaxed sleeping that Pigsy purposely didn’t wake you…!
“Yeah, uh, Mei had to end the hangout early ‘cause her parents got back too soon…” MK said quietly.
“Ohh, poor kid,” Tang sympathized with you since he listened to Pigsy’s whole explanation. The chef nodded in agreement, and they both conversed further about it.
As opposed to MK’s usual loudness, right now he was silent. He tuned out the chatter once he zoned out.
Pigsy’s words sunk in, and he couldn’t help but feel a sense of understanding. After all, he had a similar upbringing; Pigsy took him in when he was a small, abandoned child. Unfortunately, you weren’t as lucky, and you were a whole teen on the streets. He felt some heartache himself just hearing that.
He wondered if he’d end up like you if he wasn’t adopted at a young age.
MK's thoughts got cut off when the door bursted open. “Heyyy guys!” The dragon girl had her hand on her hip in the entrance.
“MEI!!!” MK pounced onto her in a hug.
Pigsy and Tang glanced between the two best friends. “Didn’t you two just hang out?”
“Duh,” said Mei and MK simultaneously, the former shutting the door and walking further inside. The two elders decided to ignore their antics.
“Whatever, not important!” Pigsy argued. “We’ve got to discuss [Name]’s living situation now that MK’s back!”
“Who’s [Name]?” Mei tilted her head curiously.
“She’s homeless.” Tang said in a hushed tone.
“She’s HOMELESS!!” MK blurted albeit loudly.
“Whuh…me…?” Each of the four turned at the sound coming from the other doorway, the one that lead to the stairs. You stood in the doorframe, sleepily rubbing your eye. You already freshened up in MK’s bathroom, so you didn’t look too disheveled.
Tang gave MK a jab in the arm for the rude exclamation, earning a strained “Ow!” from the latter.
Mei rushed to your side and put her arm around you. “Don’t worry [Name]! I’ll buy you a house!!” She was very friendly for someone who met you three seconds ago.
"Oh yeah, Mei’s like RICH!!" MK added.
"Wh- NO!" Pigsy sputtered.
"Aww, but why not?" The younger two asked Pigsy.
"Because, because uhhh..."
Tang pushed his glasses up. "Because teenagers legally can’t live alone."
"Yeah, what he said!" Pigsy nodded furiously.
"Shucks...I guess we're roomies now!" MK wrapped his arm round your other shoulder.
“No, none of that either!” The pig argued back.
You looked at the boy on your left and the girl on your right. It took a second to recognize it was MK the Monkie Kid, and Mei the famous streamer/heir to the dragon family. Even the random dude eating food looked familiar.
“I’m MK by the way, and these are my friends!” He gestured to everyone before him.
“I think I’ve seen you people on TV a few times” You said with a smile.
“Oho, are you a fan?” The hero grinned.
“Uh, I wouldn’t say that…”
Mei snickered at MK being humbled, Pigsy only tapped his foot impatiently.
Tang noticed his old friend’s underlying apprehensiveness from when they talked earlier. “Hi [Name].” He greeted you pleasantly. “Pigsy told me a few things about you, you like the noodles here right?”
You nodded. “Yup, this place is my new favorite restaurant ever!”
“It’s mine too.” He smiled. “I’m Tang, by the way. I wanted to ask if you’d be comfortable staying with me and Pigsy.”
Was this…really happening to you?
“We’ve got our own apartment 5 minutes away from here, and think about it like this: there’ll be loads of free noodles!”
Your gaze locked onto the floor timidly. “Is it really okay with you?”
“Of course, we can’t just leave someone in need.” Tang answered.
You looked up at the pig demon. “Mr. Pigsy?”
MK and Mei turned to him, seemingly invested.
Pigsy took his chef hat off and held it in his clawed-hands. “Of course.”
You could feel your eyes getting wet, so you looked away again. “Then…I’ll stay with you! Thank you so, so much.” Without thinking, you hugged Pigsy.
He smiled softly and rested his hand on your head. “You’re welcome.”
After that heartwarming day, your life became much better. The guest room in Pigsy and Tang’s house became your bedroom, and they let you decorate it how you liked. As much as you reminded Pigsy of MK, one thing different he loved about you was how you were a better listener. He tried to pass on his family recipes to his son, but growing up, MK was messy. Following precise directions was super difficult for him.
You on the other hand, you could listen attentively and actually know the difference between 1/2 and 1/4 cups.
There were times where you really didn’t care about cooking, but it was spending time with Pigsy that you looked up to.
MK and Mei took you out all the time and let you experience the youthful fun you missed out on. Mei would buy you clothes and makeup and literally everything while shopping, and you felt super bad about it, but Mk reassured you that she does that to him too, and she’s crazy loaded anyway.
But there was one thing that felt wrong; as fun as this new life was, you felt like you were being kinda…useless. While everyone was fighting demons, you’d stay home doing nothing. And you couldn’t just magically learn fighting skills, so an easier option was…
“What?” Pigsy looked down quizzically at your small figure holding a broom. It was Monday morning before any customers even called in.
“I saaaid…I wanna work for you!! I can’t just sit around all day, especially after you’ve done so much for me!” You rambled as you already began sweeping up all the dirt on the floor.
Pigsy hovered over you as you cleaned. “You need rest [Name], starving for so long’s made ya weak.”
“I’ve basically recovered, so just gimme a chance! Pretty please?”
He let out a long sigh (albeit secretly happy with your determination to prove yourself.)“Alright, if you insist. But no delivery.”
He shrugged and ruffled your hair. “Give it a few years.”
For the next few hours, you swept and re-swept the floors everytime a customer would trudge over all your hard work; but you didn’t mind very much, at least you looked useful! You wiped down the counters and tables and cleaned out the fridge.
The restaurant looked cleaner than it ever did in ages. There was never a janitor here in the first place, only MK who’d sweep every 5 months and Pigsy’s old knees to bend down and pick up stuff. So when MK, Mei and Tang visited later at night, they were gawking at the shining floor and walls.
MK whistled at the cleanliness. “Damn, [Name]! Looking good!”
“Yeah, perioddd!!” Mei squealed.
You looked away bashfully at the hype you got from your friends. “Thanks guys!”
Pigsy was behind the cash register. He held out a few bills for you to take. “Here you go kiddo.”
“Huh?!” Your eyes darted between him and the money.
“Wow, your first payment, you should feel accomplished.” Tang patted your head.
“I…I can’t accept this.” MK, Mei, and Tang’s looks of admiration faltered.
“What?!” Pigsy said. “Why?”
“I only wanted to work so I could pay you back.” You answered simply.
“Look kid, I get that you wanna be polite ‘n all, but you don’t have to give something in return all the time.” The chef held the money more forward. “Besides, you worked for hours today, it’d be child labor if I didn’t pay you.”
You had a courageous look in your eyes. “No! It’s your money Pigsy!!”
“Really. Then what’s that?” He pointed at something behind you. Once you turned around, he shoved the money in your bag on the counter.
The sound of it prompted you to turn around harshly and notice the money stuffed inside. You snatched the money out of there and, well…cue the fight.
The other three’s eyes flicked back and forth to you and Pigsy, while the both of you pushed back and forth on who would keep the money. Mei and MK snickered.
“This is gonna be a long week.” Tang muttered.
“Easy for you to say, you’re gonna be eating during all of this,” Mei remarked.
You could say the following week went smoothly, if you talked about how fast you were to open the door for a customer, answer the phone, and load the dishwasher—buuut… if you mentioned the nightly clashes and bargaining between you and Pigsy, then…not so much.
Ever since your little tussle on Monday, both you and Pigsy’s motivations remained unfettered. Every day you’d have these little battles of trying to give each other the money. You’d suddenly find extra yuan bills in your pocket, and then Pigsy would find those same bills back in the cash register when counting up the day’s earnings. The two of you were going back and forth on this, and neither was letting up.
It was Friday night now, and the chef was putting away chopsticks when he opened a drawer, and there was a ton of money stuffed inside.
“Whyyy?! We’re watching a movie!”
“I SAID GET DOWN HERE THIS INSTANT!!!”
You ran down the stairs and walked up to the counter.
“Explain this!” He gestured to the open drawer.
“Oh, that’s just your money.” You cheekily put emphasis on it being his.
“Kid, that ain’t true and you know it! You gotta stop putting yer money in weird places!”
The two of you erupted into bickering once again, which called down your usual gossip-obsessed audience. Mei, MK, and Tang all peeked at the scene from the doorway.
“Last time you put it in my shoe!” Pigsy accused.
“YOU put it under my pillow!!” You retorted.
He sputtered. “That was the tooth fairy…?”
“Teens don’t even lose teeth DAD.”
You felt your stomach drop. The room went dead silent. No laughter from Mei or MK, and no witty comment from Tang. Your brain rushed with thoughts in panic, trying to come up with something to say.
Suddenly, the phone rang, its chime cutting through the room harshly.
“I should take that.” Pigsy uttered quickly and walked into the other room where it came from.
Now you wanted to crumble in embarrassment. You groaned, covering your face.
“[Name], you good?” MK poked you.
You flinched when you heard him behind you, so everyone was watching the whole time?!! That made things 10x worse!!
You jumped to explain yourself turning to your friends. “Okay, so maybe I see Mr. Pigsy as a father figure, but what else was I supposed to see him as?!!” You almost hyperventilated.
“Aww, chillax [Nickname], even I see him as one!” Mei rubbed your back comfortingly.
You looked up at Mei, and then MK. “Well, yeah, I know he’s you guys’ dad too, but…it’s different when it’s you!!”
“How come?” Tang inquired.
“Mr. Pigsy’s known them since forever,” you turned to the scholar. “So obviously he’d be fine with them seeing him as…that.”
“Pffft, you seriously don’t think he’d be fine with you seeing him as a dad?” MK asked with a lighthearted tone, though he kept his voice soft.
You shook your head, so Tang looked to the side dramatically. “Then I’ve something to share. Ahem…”
Mei whispered exasperatedly. “Looks like Tang’s gonna get all monologue-y.”
“Something I’ve noticed about Pigsy is that he’s pretty observant for a tough looking guy. I’d see him staring out the window everyday like sonder was apart of his daily routine…”
Tang’s narration painted a picture in your mind; Pigsy cooking in the kitchen, looking out the window above the sink while Tang watched from the counter stools.
“I remember at one point he’d be really focused when looking outside. Like he wasn’t just looking at people, he was looking for someone. One day, he was more klutzy than usual, so I asked him what the matter was,”
“It’s nothing, I told you…” Pigsy murmured as he picked up the spoons he dropped on the floor.
Tang bent down to help pick them up. “Pigsyy, you’re lying~”
“Hmph, I guess you’re pretty observant then.”
“Maybe not as observant as you, since you seem to be fixated on something outside.”
The pig demon bit the inside of his cheek, contemplating how to word this.
“There’s this teen I keep seeing out and about. And I’m just…worried. I don’t think she’s got a home.”
Tang hummed in response. “Maybe you should invite her inside, offer a free meal?”
“I know, it’s just…I’m pretty scary-looking, Tang.”
“Just face it, I’m a pig demon. And the reincarnate of Zhu Ganglie.”
“Technically Zhu Baije,” The scholar corrected.
Pigsy rolled his eyes. “Still scary…”
By now they’d collected all the stray utensils and set the tray of them back on the counter. “Well I don’t think you’re scary, not in the slightest! Scary people don’t make heavenly noodles—or let their old buddy eat for free.” He teased.
Pigsy scoffed. “Don’t remind me.” But a smile was clearly on his face. “Anyway, you’re probably right. I should invite that kid inside, it’s the right thing to do.”
He peered out the window again, but his face fell upon realizing you’d disappeared. “Shucks, she’s gone.”
Tang put a hand on the demon’s shoulder and squeezed it. “Hm…maybe next time.
“So Mr. Pigsy’s cared about me for all this time? That’s so long!” You marveled once Tang finished his story.
“Yup! And that was just ONE time Pigsy was looking for you.”
“Awww!” MK and Mei cooed at the sweet story. You felt a warm feeling inside, your embarrassment from the vulnerability earlier now mostly faded, and replaced with filial love.
Back when you were on the streets, you always felt unsafe, like someone could strike at any moment. If only you knew that someone was watching your back all along from afar.
“Does that mean he’ll let me be his kid?” You asked aspiringly, looking between the three in front of you.
“Yeah, why else would he learn to cook your favorite foods?” Mei grinned.
“And, I mean, he doesn’t just hire anyone.” MK winked.
“Well that explains why this place is clinically understaffed,” Tang said matter-of-factly, interrupting the hopeful moment. MK and Mei bashed the nerd for that and blabbered about how he sucks, but your brain tuned their chatter out. There was something you needed to do.
You ran into the kitchen to the extra storage room, where the phone was on a table. Pigsy went there initially to pick up a call, but he hadn’t come out after that.
You creaked the door open, peeking inside. “Mr. Pigsy?” You asked timidly, and you noticed him still on the phone. Oh phew, guess he was just dealing with some cranky customer and not purposely hiding from you.
Perfect timing though, because he just hung up the call. “Heeey kiddo…” He said with an awkwardly grin.
“Um. Sorry for calling you dad I guess” You said bluntly.
“Hey, wait-It’s okay. I mean, I call you ‘kid’.” He reasoned, walking up to you.
“Yeah…” You inhaled a deep breath, sucking in all your fear.
“I’m sorry for bargaining with you so much I just feel bad for staying at your place all the time, I mean you yell at Tang for freeloading all the time, so does that mean you feel the same about me?” You had to take a breather after rambling so much.
Pigsy blinked. “That’s just me and Tang’s relationship, we argue.” He smiled in amusement. “Seriously, don’t worry about it! Unlike me and Tang, It’s not like you and I fight for real.”
“Yeah…we don’t.” Looking back on those silly hiding spots the money would end up in, you felt a smile creeping up on your face too. But you wouldn’t laugh just yet. “I still mean it though…I just feel like I’m not doing enough.”
“Kid, you being here is enough.”
As soon as he said that, your gaze left the floor and you looked him in the eyes.
“You don’t owe me anything. You’ll understand this someday, but when you’ve got your own kid, seeing them grow is a pride in itself.” He squeezed your shoulder.
“It’ll be the smallest of things that make me proud, whether it’s seeing you cook your own food or…when you use some big fancy word. I dunno, this stuff’s so confusing…” He admitted that last part sheepishly.
“Point is. You’re my kid and I love ya. Don’t feel bad for seeing me as family, ‘cause we are one.”
You hadn’t realized it, but tears were bubbling up in your eyes and rolling down your cheeks. Pigsy pulled you into a hug, it was the safest you’d ever felt in your life—in the arms of your father.
You and Pigsy had decided on a new system, he’d pay you a bit less, just enough so you could have your own pocket money; and you’d work less hours so you weren’t spending all day there.
The weekend afterwards was a blast, MK and Mei took you out again like every other weekend, so you returned to the restaurant exhausted (from a day of fun, of course!)
The bell jingled upon your arrival, as you held the door open for MK and Mei to walk in. “We’re baaack!” MK shouted.
Tang flinched at the sudden shout. “Greaaat…Oh! [Name], over here!”
You tilted your head, walking up to the scholar, “Yeahhh?”
“I’ve got a surprise, go get Pigsy!”
“DAD!” Both you and MK called in unison.
When Pigsy came around the counter to where everyone was, he stood beside Tang. Tang was sitting on one of the stools. “You guys ready?”
“For what?” Mei asked excitedly.
Tang opened up a folder on the counter and revealed papers with fine print on them, a line to put your signature, and…
“Adoption papers?” You asked in awe.
“Duh, wanna make things official?” Tang asked, holding out a pen.
Before you could respond, Pigsy snatched the pen and scribbled his messy signature onto the paper. “Wha-Pigsyyy! What if [Name] doesn’t wanna be our kid?” He laughed.
“Yeah yeah, you’ve got no choice.” He snorted, holding out the pen for you to take.
“Aw yeah, you’re stuck with us forever [Name]!” MK laughed.”
“Yeah, legally bound!!” Mei added.
You looked at everyone, MK, Mei, Tang, and Pigsy, (and took the pen from your father; He had the softest smile of all. It was up to you now. You hovered over the paper slightly, the pen gliding across the printed line.
At long last, you had found your family.
