Ambrose O. — MainVerse

| Time and its Relationship with Ambrose.

❝ A clock ticks in an empty room, marking moments that no one will remember. Though, my body is burning with the shame of not belonging. ❞

Welcome to my first little rant about Ambrose and his character! I thought it’d be nice to talk about a few of the things that symbolize him here on this account, starting with clocks. Clocks alluring towards time and what it has to do with Ambrose. Time is very important to his character theming as he, himself, runs on “borrowed” time.

| Part 1 — Clocks

To begin, in his story clocks have a tendency to stop working around him or either buffer out. This is due to the fact that he’s like an anomaly to the world, something that should not be. This is also because there’s something lurking deep within Ambrose, right up under his skin. Clocks stopping often symbolizes the deterioration of human structure, logic, and predictability. This symbolizes the return of the chaotic nature of the universe, the nullification of cyclical destiny and moments of fatigue, memory loss, and nihilism.

Ambrose, as a character, has multiple instances where he seems tired: fatigued. Moments where he can barely remember things that happened, or even people that interacted with him. He experiences these extreme moments of fatigue and memory loss more recently, gradually as he has gotten older. Speaking to him is like speaking to a statue with hollowed insides. It is as if he doesn’t belong here, as if he doesn’t actually exist as his own being.

All this feeds into that void he feels in his chest, that growing nihilism. Every time clocks stop around him, he feels like these moments don’t exist and he’s just floating on rippling water. In his eyes there’s something between him and his body. He feels like his body isn’t his own or that he isn’t in it, at all.

| Part 2 — The Sun & Fire

The Sun & Ambrose

The sun, across many ancient cultures, is worshipped and revered for its light and warmth. Symbolizing things such as vitality, energy, and divinity that nourishes and sustains the earth: Order. It can be analogous to the eye of the divine, something watching over the world. The light from the sun being a sort of representation for clarity, truth, and guidance from beyond. The sun’s journey through the sky has historically dictated humanity’s perception of time, this being seen through ancient calendars, sundials, and shadow clocks. Its rising represented birth and resurrection, while its setting represented rest and death.

Externally, the people of the church, alongside his family, saw Ambrose like the sun. It wasn’t something insanely crazy like revering him as god, no. Ambrose was thought of highly, all because he came back after being a stillborn upon birth. He had no heartbeat nor breathing. A whole twenty minutes had passed after he had came out of the womb, being proclaimed dead. It was after those same twenty minutes he started moving and whining again, the anomaly. His parents and his church believed it to be a miracle from god.

Ambrose always attended church. He helped by doing service for them as well. His mannerism developing from this work and family life. It is why he believes so much in mutual benefit, why he’s somewhat of a workaholic. It stems from an uncomfortable psychological contract—the built-in social rule that if someone gives you something, you are obligated to return the favor. When Ambrose knows he cannot reciprocate—financially, materially, or with equal effort—the gift transforms into an emotional burden, bringing forth anxiety. Like the sun, he must constantly provide his light, in his perspective.

Fire & Ambrose

Fire can be seen as the ultimate symbol of duality. It represents the delicate, yet fragile balance between creation and destruction. As a primal element, it can signify profound transformation, passion, purification, and divine presence. Fire must be fed to survive, mirroring the human condition, acting as a powerful metaphor for life, drive, and mortality.

Despite being seen as the sun by the people around him, Ambrose is more analogous to that of fire. In order to provide, he is willing to let himself burn. It is adjacent to the way that fire is destructive, yet creates fertile ash that will bring forth new life. He was resurrected—or reborn—when he came back to life upon being a stillborn. In recent years he has become more closer to fire than he’s ever been before. His days feel shorter, but are longer, and more sporadic like the shifting form of a flame; living in moments and burning away quickly.

Personality wise, Ambrose’s connection with fire and its symbolization of fervor is muddled. Due to his semi-isolated upbringing with the church and family, Ambrose has slightly poor social skills, that translate as him being aloof and weird by others. According to some townsfolk, Ambrose is supposedly frail, yet enigmatic. However, clergy members find him to be an interesting and special persona. This impression is given to people due to the fact he can have little to no filter from time to time. This characteristic, added to his—seemingly—innocent demeanor, gives him a snarky and oblivious personality. Nonetheless, Ambrose appreciates those he considers his peers, or family, having been taught numerous lessons from them.

After being previously considered a miracle of the Lord by his town’s Methodist Church, Ambrose has grown some resentment for being treated as one. The Church used to ask for more than he could give—which was what made him eventually play for Magnolia Moon, easing into his drinking habits—the Church had asked him to use his blessing for their personal agenda and solely in the name of the Lord. Due to feeling like he truly had no ounce of autonomy, he did not identify with any of the numerous names and titles that they had bestowed upon him. Soon enough, even his own birth name was included, occasionally responding to it. He is a fire that is on the brink of being snuffed out, being worn down from all the energy he has to burn to shine brighter.

HAPPY PRIDE MONTH !

Thought I’d make a quick lil post again, this time talking about Ambrose’s identity romantically.

Ambrose is bisexual, by our terms, internally that is. Externally, he couldn’t express his interest in the same gender, nor does he linger on wondering about it. This is because of the time period he is from and also being a part of religious activity; he’s a protestant christian, methodist in particular, being baptized as a baby. This affects him because of the fact being queer during that time wasn’t safe. Especially with him being a black man and all.

Nonetheless, Ambrose isn’t too worried about relationships, not that he wouldn’t mind being in one. He’s easy, if a person shows genuine kindness or interest towards him, he finds it attractive. Them doing things that can show said person is really adamant for him makes him shy and a bit nervous.

( Also, yes, his new claim is David Jonsson. )

I’m baaack! Again, mainly because I’m free from all my duties for summer. Regardless, I wanted to come back once more and start interacting with everyone! Also because this has had some heavy changes to them, especially in face-claim. Inwhich his new face-claim is, David Jonsson!! I’ll eventually get to updating his page with his new lore overtime and just talking about him. But, in the meantime, vague-posting and interacting with him is the goal til’ those come out!

P.S. — There will be a second character that coexists with him at that same-time and will appear depending on what the situation is that my oc, Ambrose, is in. So keep your eyes peeled!

‘Immortal’ name? He hadn’t heard of that before, but he has a feeling there might be more to it later. “We doin’ full names? Got’cha, Ambrose Anemo Ominira, Ambrose is still fine though.” It was quite noticeable that he was thinking about the concept of an ‘immortal’ name.

December 6th, 193X

— Setting: Downtown Cottonwood, Ambrose’s House

The Welkin Moon shined high above, beyond the firmament, its hue a silver-blue, hinting at the arrival of winter in Cottonwood. During this time of the year they’d call it the “Frost Moon” because of its glow giving only a faint reminder of what used to be, the warmth of the sun. Although, the moon glistened at different intervals of the night, like now, its surface pulsing out every few moments a ring of light; a halo.

Ciarán had stood correct, there was a looming sense of festivity hovering about town, christmas spirit if you will. The season of winter had arrived, with it had come many different types of events, celebrations, and so forth.

Amidst the snowy landscape, the sound of floorboards creaking came from the rocking chair Ambrose was sitting on. His backyard was completely covered in snow, reaching almost onto the deck, the usual nightly singing of cicadas muted; silence and hollow winds being the only song the world offered. He dawdled in this silence, not a single hum or rhythmic word escaping his throat. His fingers fidgeting tediously at the wood of the chair, yet a carefulness lingered despite the lack of it physically.

“—I suppose it is.” Ciarán had took him by surprise, if it wasn’t apparent, his head turning in his direction to take a look at him. He took notice to how his eyes mirrored the snow, even the moon. “… Quite pretty, ain’t it now? Do y’ like the snow at all?” There was a double meaning to what he said, maybe alluding to how pretty the snow and his eyes were. The finger picking at the wood had slowed down in its advance, Ambrose being more aware of his surroundings now that someone was here.

— OPEN STARTER

| “A Chilly, Yet Somber Night in Downtown Cottonwood.”

——— January 12th, 1933

A cold night’s breeze trotted through the streets of Cottonwood, dirt and small rocks being pushed across the ground in its passing. Activity in town had dived down, the only people roaming its streets being those who sat outside stores, hoping for some sort of scratch to drop from above and down into their hats or buckets. The other half were good old workaholics, running about town making the same scratch those on the streets needed, obviously they couldn’t pay them much mind, everyman for himself, and everywoman for herself. Yet, in Cottonwood, people pitied each other, almost like a family would when they notice one another struggling, yet decide to give them a small something for the sake of it.

The moon hung high tonight, distant with a soft blue hue to it, somehow feeling more comforting despite how far it was. Although, the clouds kept its soothing light brief, passing over it, shortening those moments of warmth to only fleeting glimpses. Made perfect sense to why it was named the “Welkin Moon” by the folk down here, just like heaven you can only imagine its warmth, lay your eyes upon it from afar, sinners ain’t allowed passed those pearly gates. Through fragmented moonlight, cicadas sing an unrelenting song underneath the moon, for the moon, fireflies gliding in the midst of it as illusive stars.

A bit more further down the road was a particular location, a bar, more specifically a speakeasy, its entrance being tucked away in an alleyway, seamlessly blending in without shame for the line it had leading up to it. Welcome to Magnolia Moon, a place where escapism is undoubtedly enabled, to hide away from the lingering gaze of the world, where the moon’s threads of fate—woven from moonlight— freeze for a moment. The patrons inside were starting to lose themselves, already had lost themselves, or too busy chatting to comprehend the time. Musicians gave way to these lucid moments as they played on stage, a fresh mix of jazz, rock, and then straight blues music.

Closer towards the bar area, Ambrose would be found sitting on a stool, a glass in hand with his eyes lingering down it. He wasn’t exempt from the lucid effects the speakeasy gave off, yet he was already experiencing such effects beforehand. The music had been blurred out completely, fading to noise in the back of his head, it was like he was stuck in a trance, one of accidental contemplation. He had an elbow propped onto the counter, glass in hand as his hand swayed it with a languid manner.

What might he be thinking about? What could have gotten him to come out here tonight?
