Industry Events at the 16th Encounters South African International Documentary Festival 5-15 June 2014, Cape Town and Johannesburg
The support of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF), Festival funders and Industry partners; has made it possible for Encounters to present an engaging and enlightening industry programme for the 16th edition of the Festival: three master classes, The annual NFVF Western Cape Industry Event, a SAGE editing seminar, and a presentation by a leading news channel. These not-to-missed programmes are presented by award-winning and renowned practitioners.

SCORING DOCUMENTARY: Composing Masterclass with Philip Miller and Ben Ludik
In the desperate marathon race of filmmaking, a documentary’s soundtrack may be its most compromised and underappreciated element. However, two of the most powerful local films in the Encounters 2014 programme, Miners Shot Down and I, Afrikaner, prove otherwise, with original scores by two of South Africa’s most eminent film composers: Philip Miller, collaborator of William Kentridge, and a composer of works for feature film, television and theatre; and Ben Ludik whose compositions can be heard in recent acclaimed local features Skoonheid and Die Wonderwerker. Chaired by Dr Ian Rijsdijk of the University of Cape Town’s Film department, this Master Class focuses on a scene-by-scene analysis of the inspiration, instrumentation and process of supporting the image with the power of music.

FINAL CUT FOR REAL: Creative Producing Master Class with Anne Köhncke
With a slate that includes Oscar-nominated The Act of Killing, TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard, Cathedrals of Culture, Concerning Violence and The Human Scale, Final Cut For Real is one of the industry’s foremost production companies specializing in high-end, creative documentaries with auteur filmmakers. In her Master Class, company co-founder and producer, Anna Köhncke, will discuss how she collaborates with directors and works with her production team, tackling each project from different angles to get a film up and running, right through to launching it on the international market.

LONG-DISTANCE FILMMAKING: Master Class with Rachel Boynton
One of contemporary cinema’s most celebrated documentary auteurs, Rachel Boynton is renowned for gaining access to the impossible. Even more remarkable is her commitment to ambitious projects which traverse both time and space. Her first feature, multi-award winning Our Brand Is Crisis was filmed over three years and two continents while Big Men journeys from Africa to the USA and took 7 years to complete. In this Master Class, Boynton focuses on the practicalities of endurance filmmaking, keeping a project alive - across great distance and over time, through financing, collaboration and commitment. But most importantly, once the years and footage have built up, how does she know when to stop shooting, how to draw the line in what is constantly evolving?

Al JAZEERA INFORMATION SESSION
Al Jazeera Commissioning Editors will convey the Broadcasters’ vision for programming, commissioning guidelines and respond to questions from the Industry. The presentation will be followed by a cocktail event and networking.
An award-winning journalist and television producer with 30 years’ experience in the media industry, Jeffreys has been an executive producer at Al Jazeera English since 2008. Now based in Doha, he is responsible for its People & Power investigative current affairs programme and a range of other documentaries across the network.
A senior producer based in Al Jazeera English’s bureau in London, Young commissions a wide range of documentaries on African and Middle Eastern subject matter, for broadcast in the channel’s flagship observational documentary strand, Witness, as well as other documentary seasons.
Al Jazeera English is an international news channel, with over sixty bureaux spanning six different continents. Established in 2006, it has continued to grow in reach and popularity due to its global coverage, especially from under-reported regions. The channel currently broadcasts to over 250m households across 130 countries. Its in-depth approach to journalism has won it numerous awards and plaudits over the years, including RTS News Channel of the Year 2012, Freesat Best News Channel, the Columbia Journalism Award, a DuPont award, and a George Polk award.

The NLDTF relies on funds from the proceeds of the National Lottery. The Lotteries Act and regulations guide the way in which NLDTF funding may be allocated.
