For the first time in years the original Edwardian toilet at the old Newtown market complex is again accessible to the public. A replica of the toilet was built in the 1980s and was home to the legendary 'Kippies' jazz bar.
Trailer: In search of our own - the forgotten legacy of Norman Eaton / Adriaan de la Rey and PJ Kotze (directors) / 2014.
Norman Eaton was an idiosyncratic Pretorian architect who has had a deep-rooted influence on the architecture of the city. This documentary explores his forgotten legacy, the influences underpinning his work, and questions the way forward for the Capital City through a series of candid interviews and cinematic excursions into the poetics of his architecture. The film is an Open Window Film Arts production directed by Adriaan de la Rey and PJ Kotze. For more information visit www.openwindow.co.za

Activists are painting inner city Johannesburg with shocking pink paint, in an attempt to reclaim the city that has fallen to de-gentrification over the past 25 odd years. Their flush pink hue brings life to the often grim sidewalks, rooftops and city walls.

Guy Trangos Contributes on the value of architectural heritage in Johannesburg. This follows news of an addition to Radoma Court in Yeoville, one of the finest examples of International Style Modernism in Joburg. "We should try to preserve as many old buildings as we possibly can, given that cities are remarkable places to be in and experience precisely because they are dense sites of significant mixed cultural and historical heritage. This doesn’t mean that cities should remain static and unresponsive to the changing needs of society. Cities cannot be fixed in time, but the few architecture gems Johannesburg has should be better protected. These should not necessarily turned into empty museums to architecture, but rather repaired and preserved as best as possible, while still fulfilling their functions.” Read more here:http://www.urbanjoburg.com/radoma-court-rescue/ See this update from the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation (https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=838820992798781&id=586636158017267) for photos of the addition.
