Consider these scenarios

Cosima, Charlotte, and Sarah clone snuggle sandwich.

Scott babysitting Charlotte and being really awkward at first but then they warm up to each other and at the end of the day, Charlotte falls asleep in his lap.

Krystal taking Charlotte on a shopping spree.

Alison letting Charlotte help with her musicals and plays.

Alison taking Charlotte to church to spend time with other kids at Sunday School but in the middle of the service, they call Alison because Charlotte started an argument with the teacher over creationism vs evolution. At one point Charlotte yells “I have scientific evidence!”

OB Science Time: Charlotte and the Sickness

So episode 4x03 just ending and HOLY MOLY!!!! What an episode!!!!! So many things, so much to talk about, so many feels! But of course I am very excited to discuss the extremely sad surprise finding that Charlotte Bowles, at the tender age of 8 (or 9 or whatever it doesn’t matter) is already sick with the clone sickness.

How is this possible? All the other clones didn’t get sick until their late 20s, early 30s! What gives?!?!?! Well the answer, of course, is in the science! More precisely, it’s in the way she was cloned!

Another fun fact we learned this episode was that Charlotte (and the other 399 attempts at a second generation of Leda clones) was cloned from Rachel. Now, as we are all aware from previous seasons, the original genome and the information about the initial cloning process were lost in the fire Leekie set. Therefore, the team of scientists working to create Charlotte had to start at square one with cloning procedures, and as we can see by their success rate they weren’t very successful.

One attribute of cloning an organism that has proved problematic for scientists is the fact that the cell that you are using from the original to implant into a donor egg often retains the age of the original. That is, even though the new cloned cell is at the very first steps of development, the DNA damage of the cell is consistent with the age of the original. This was seen in the case of Dolly the sheep, who was cloned from an adult sheep and ended up dying young because her cells were aged (and aged cells end up dying which is not good of course). 

So, Charlotte was cloned from Rachel roughly sometime between ages 20 and 24, and so even though she is only 8-9, her cells probably resemble the cells of a 30 year old. And the clone disease kicks in for the Leda clones around this time, so this is why Charlotte is already coughing up blood at such a young age :(

When the shooting was complete and my daughter (Cynthia Gallant) had changed her hair, costumes and make-up five times, she exclaimed, "Tatiana does this every week??" Cynthia suddenly had a whole new appreciation for what Tatiana goes through.
