Submission guidelines:

This tournament is for ships that contain large age gaps but that are between two (or more) adults ONLY. All characters included are 18 or over. I want to be absolutely clear about that.

Fictional characters only. If you want to make your own tournament that includes historical figures (even fictionalised versions) and celebrities then I'll support you but this is not that tournament.

Obviously what counts as a large age gap is relative to the ages of the characters. An 11 year age gap between a 19 year old and a 30 year old? Yeah, that's pretty substantial. An 11 year age gap between a 42 year old and a 53 year old? That's barely an age gap at all. Just use your common sense.

Preferably it should be a ship that at least multiple people ship or that has at least one fic on Ao3 and not something that exists purely in your head and nowhere else, but hey. If you convince me then you convince me.

Ships where one half is an immortal should at least still FEEL like an age gap ship. I love vampires and timelords but a ship between a 19 year old and an immortal being who's secretly 500 but who looks and acts 19 and almost never makes reference to the centuries of life experience they have on the other doesn't really count, does it?

Polyships are absolutely allowed!

Ships where most people only ship them when they're both adults but where they met when one was under 18 will be taken on a case by case basis. (i.e. is the younger party an adult for more of canon or a minor for more of canon? how old exactly was the younger party when they met? were they an older teenager or a literal infant? how old was the ACTOR at the time? and is the ship popular/influential enough that not including them would be doing a disservice to fandom history?)

That's it I think! Just use your common sense!

So embarrassing when a weird ship you love is from a really niche show, because when you're explaining why you ship it, you have to explain all the details and just keep making yourself look more insane.

How am I supposed to be like "yeah she's 18 or 19, he's 45 or 46. yeah they met because he's her childhood best friend's godfather. also he broke into her highschool but that's not important it's never really mentioned again. yeah okay but listen he teaches her how to kill vampires and saves her life and stuff! and she stood by his side and stayed loyal when he was being accused of murder 💖 and they can bond over being the ordinary boring socially awkward one while their only friend their own age is their generation's destiny-driven great vampire slayer. yeah his only friend his own age was her only friend her own age's dad. yeah that's the guy he was being accused of murdering. he didn’t do it though he only killed a bunch of other people but they weren't human so it's fine"

Excited to get started with this tournament. My biggest hope is that instead of causing fights, it helps people make friends with people with similar ship tastes to them, and introduces people to media they'd like that they wouldn't otherwise have checked out. <3

Honestly? Not to show my own biases again but it was all over for me the second Ashes to Ashes shot deliberate parallels between scenes of Gene protecting and carrying child Alex and scenes of Gene protecting and carrying adult Alex while painting one in a caregiver kind of way and the other in a romantic/sexual tension kind of way, and the second articles about the show and arguably the show itself implied that seeing him save her as a child was what made her fall in love with him, and the second the show itself flirted with the idea that he was some kind of guardian angel to her, and painted that romantically.

Genuinely all the love in the world to people who talked in their submissions about how healthy and balanced their ship is, how they see each other as equals and how there's no power imbalance, I see you and I hear you and you and your ship are so valid, but for me NOTHING eats as hard as when the younger one sees the older one as a protector and a mentor and a figure of authority to rebel against sometimes but ultimately show blind devoted loyalty to, and the older one sees the younger one as someone they have a near-sacred duty to care for and protect and look after.

Like, sometimes (in fact, often) fandoms will accuse any two characters who are very close but have an age gap of being "parent and child" either just because the ship grosses them out because of the age gap or because they fully cannot comprehend of ordinary platonic close intergenerational friendships, and that's possibly the most annoying thing in all of fandom.

But sometimes. Sometimes they're right. Sometimes there is kind of a paternal/maternal/caretaker vibe. And sometimes there's a romantic or sexual vibe as well, at the same time. And that's the really juicy stuff.

Never watched Grey's Anatomy, but these fuckers are automatically getting included just because the propaganda submitted with them made me laugh until I cried. If I have to limit the amount of ships from each fandom I include, I'm picking these guys to represent your show, hope that's okay Grey's Anatomy fandom.

oh! I forgot one! again it may not be worth putting in the tournament because only like 4 people ever wrote fic and people got very "ick! it's father-daughter!" about it, but near and dear to my heart is Georgia/Rube from Dead Like Me, a recently dead 18 year old girl and a 50-something man who died 80 years~ before (who is played by Mandy Patinkin!!), who are grim reapers. And argue a lot. A Lot. But have a very intense relationship and are closer to each other than anyone else in the Reaper group.

probably not really going to make it anywhere in any polls, but I think it's a show and pairing you'd enjoy! And writer 'thisiszircon' on dreamwidth did write a fair amount of george/rube fic that's def worth reading

(kinda) related to this blogs theme, i was watching a game show the other day and two of the contestants were an older guy (like 50ish full salt and pepper) and a younger gal (early 30s ish) and throughout the entire show they were lowkey flirting the entire time like everytime he made a joke (good or not) she would each over and rub his shoulder or hold on to his arm and at one point he was telling a story abt how he went to the gym and almost strain himself and she was like "thats such an old man thing to say" and he was like "oh it definitely is but you dont seem to mind" uhhh idk where i was going w this i just wanted to share

Are there any ships that meet the guidelines and there isn’t really a good reason to exclude them, but you want to anyway?

I mean, kinda? Not in that there are ships I don't want to include because I just don't like them (I don't actually like Tenrose, but I still think it deserves to be included, and even if I do end up leaving it out it'll be in favour of Ninerose because that actually got way more submissions), but more in that there's a few mortal/immortal ships that I think are really toeing the line in terms of if they should count or not, and there's a few ships that do have an age gap of like 10-15 years but they're both so hollywood-sexy that they basically look the same age, and I worry people are just going to vote for the "safer" looking option.
