Flashback (Cora)
This wasn't Scott's first adventure in babysitting; it was, however, the first time he'd been assigned to babysit by a superior agent, and his charge happened to be the niece of one Peter Hale, a werewolf who had been giving the Bureau the runaround for the past several months. It was bad enough Scott had to pretend he believed the guy when he betrayed information about as real as Bigfoot in an effort to gain the lycan's confidence. Now they were monitoring the entire Hale pack, which apparently included looking after their young.
It didn't help that Scott had befriended Talia Hale over the course of their interactions. But it would have been impossible not to. Currently, the alpha was doing some undercover work, and Scott was sitting in the spacious living room of the Hale house wondering if Cora, the youngest Hale, was ever going to come out of her room. If she didn't make an appearance within the next ten minutes, he was going to knock on her door. He did have to feed her after all.
Game Plan [Scott]
Allison tracked the flair of light behind them. She didn’t relax after realizing it was a civilian car. They were far enough from their target zone that civilian traffic began filtering through. The streetlights were back up - not regularly, but frequently enough. She still checked the skylines. They’d done damage, but there was no way she could believe that they’d decimated the gremlins’ resources.
"I’ve sent an emergency call out. Heading towards the clinic on 34th St. They’ll be prepared for us there," Lois informed them, following basic protocol.
"We’ll get there in time." Allison insisted. Maybe Scott could tell her if she believed that or not. But they turned the corner, and Joseph breathed his last. Whatever separated a body from a corpse fled quickly. Scott would be the first to know. Allison still held out hope. Anything else in their line of work would crush her.
Scott felt the life leave Joseph's body like a punch to the gut, still, they weren't just people, they were them, and there had to be something, something else -
"No," he mumbled. "This isn't... this wasn't supposed to happen."
None of them were supposed to die. Scott felt sick. This could have been Allison. He was pretty sure Joseph had a girlfriend, a short blonde who worked in R&D. 'Prepared' could mean any number of things, but chances were slim there would be a holy cleric or resurrection machine waiting for them at the emergency clinic. Scott reached for Allison's hand, still cradling Joseph in his opposite arm, because he needed to touch something alive. "They killed him."
Game Plan [Scott]
"Scott, you aren’t acting right," Allison pointed out, her expression dire. With anyone else, she wouldn’t have brought it up. They had a mission to do, and the time to lick wounds would present itself if the survived. When they survived. Scott wasn’t just another agent. He knew what it meant to a machine when one cog stopped working like it was supposed to.
But they piled into the van, and Lois drove like their lives depended on it. Allison looked down barren streets, wondering if she imagined the roar of pursuing engines, or if she should have already been preparing for another attack. While they remained in enemy territory, it was possible.
"Put pressure on the wound, Scott. We’re almost to a checkpoint. They’ll have supplies." She ordered from the front seat, words crisp and direct. They were nowhere near a checkpoint. Joseph had been clawed open, and every time Scott tried CPR, the squelch of what should have remained inside a human body was too loud.
She didn’t know if she was humoring him or herself. Either way, it didn’t feel like enough.
Allison's voice was like one of her knives slicing through the rest of the noise to reach Scott's ears, and he could hear the lie in them. He could hear everything she was feeling in that handful of words. It made him regret taking the bite, but not as much as the way Joseph's slowing breaths made him regret.
Scott should have known the extent of the internal damage. Instead he could only guess that Joseph's lungs were punctured, his ribs were broken and his chest cavity was soup. Scott should have put pressure on the wound straight away. This was basic stuff. He'd tried to use his absent abilities instead.
He would never forgive himself for those precious wasted seconds even if it was obvious already that they would have made little if any difference. He could taste the sharp sweet smell of death in the back of his throat. He shrugged out of his black tactical jacket quickly, pressing it down on Joseph's chest, cringing at how much give there was. No more pain flowed from the unconscious agent into Scott. "Supplies," Scott repeated, vaguely. He gazed up, trying to catch Allison's eyes as she looked over her seat. "We need... magic. Something."
OOC
So sad to see the Bureau close! This was by far the best, most creative RP I've ever been a part of. I'll be keeping this Scott account open, if anyone is still interested in RPing, in this verse or another. It was nice to meet you all. <3
Game Plan [Scott]
They traveled light. It was a part of every mission. They couldn’t afford to take any more than the bare minimum, and sometimes, more often than not, their baggage skewered towards weaponry than first aid supplies. Prevention was more effective than cures, and all. The gauze Allison had wrapped around his chest tugged on whole skin without disturbing the lacerations that tore Joseph in half. They couldn’t provide the right sort of pressure. They weren’t enough.
In her head, she counted the paces to their pick up point. Allison wouldn’t expect it, but it was comforting to think that they could make that many steps without incident. She’d intended to scout ahead. Familiar with the strength of a werewolf, she thought he’d be able to manage - she’d hoped. The smell of blood was too sharp, and there was already too much on her hands.
She paused only long enough to regret it, then she was by Scott’s side, working with him to pick up a teammate who was more than halfway to becoming a nobody. “Scott - Scott your eyes. Are you in control?”
Scott wasn’t Derek Hale or Cora Hale, and Allison didn’t know where her boundaries ended, not here. She gripped his wrist under Joseph’s thigh, creating a chair with their arms for an agent who might not wake up again. She didn’t say a word, but she promised not to let go.
"Fine, I'm fine," Scott insisted. His hand slid around Allison's wrist at the same time as her's curled around his. In that moment, he had no supernatural strength. He couldn't remember it, couldn't distinguish between what was and what had been him, and he wasn't trying to figure it out. His primary concern was the agent he and Allison were loading into their transport. Scott climbed in first, pulling Joseph after him, falling back so the injured agent was braced against his chest when the vehicle surged forward. Scott's hands were pressed over the weeping edges of the bandages Allison had applied, leeching pain, and he was muttering to himself. This wasn't their fault. This was bad intel.
These things happened.
Except they didn't usually happen when Scott was in the field, and when they did, he'd been able to stop them happening. It had taken a lot out of him, the healing. With an injury like this, Scott would've been bedridden for days after, but Joseph would have lived. "Don't." The pain he was taking was fading, then gone. Scott rolled Joseph onto his back and bent over him, feeling for signs of life, attempting CPR, as well as one could on a victim whose chest was ribbons.
"He's dying, Allison," Scott muttered. "Joseph, hey. Look at me, man. Please."
Game Plan [Scott]
She’d known for years that Scott could hold his own in a battle. What she saw was something else entirely. There was blood on the floor, smeared across the ground where their enemies had been dragged back into a battle they couldn’t win. There were gremlins with limbs bent in ways they shouldn’t be, the white arc of bone cutting straight through wrinkled skin. Allison didn’t want to look too closely. She couldn’t help herself, and the gun in her hand felt like it was on fire.
She wasn’t afraid, but she’d never thought she’d have to be wary around Scott McCall.
Lois’ voice was the worst sort of catalyst, but she was still radioing their support when Scott took off. She heard the battle before she arrived. Lois was still moving, her eyes glowing green and scaled claws coming into the fray more often than bullets, but when she found Joseph, she didn’t want to believe that he was the bloodied figure on the ground.
Their enemies were falling, fast.
"Get back to the van," Allison demanded, falling into a crouch by their teammate. His pulse was weak, but still fighting. There was only so much she could do with the gaping wound across his chest, but she bounded it as tightly as she could manage. "Scott - here!"
Lois was so fast, and strong, it gave Scott the same sort of elicit thrill he'd felt when Allison had first moved forward during the original scuffle, swinging her recurve like a sword. Except he was distantly aware that it wasn't really him getting - whatever it was he was getting out of this violence. It was what Cora had warned him about. Not really losing himself, but letting something else take over. This time it was Allison's voice that brought him back to clarity.
Lois had the gremlins under control and Scott was at Allison's side, his eyes still molten gold but fangs and claws retracted before his knees hit the asphalt. The stench of Joseph's injury was overwhelming. Scott's hands slipped, trying to move Allison's out of the way, both of them blood-slick. He closed his eyes and focused and nothing happened. Nothing was happening. He couldn't make the edges of the wound knit back together. It was with a horror that snapped him back to fully human instantly that he realized why, and of course.
Of course this was going to happen. "Allison." He didn't know why he said her name. Instead of pushing, then, he pulled, and black ichor surged into him, swirling with his own blood, vanishing as healing properties dissolved it like acid, but Scott couldn't share that healing. "Okay," he muttered. Lois was pulling the van up. "Help me." Scott started to lift Joseph, feeling sick himself.
Game Plan [Scott]
This wasn’t fortunate, but it wasn’t new either. Allison ducked for cover, making her way towards the closest vantage point she’d identified as she alerted the others, simultaneously loading her compact crossbow. Over halfway done, they were to continue. All Allison and Scott had to do was make sure the gremlins remained occupied. Easier said then done, but again - not new. It was a well-rehearsed scene, and they were seasoned players. Seven against two was hardly fair, but they could force their opponents into a pseudo bottleneck form, and keep them from calling for reinforcements, they could easily buy the rest of the team enough time to get out.
Except Scott wasn’t following script.
"Scott?" Allison asked, barely more than a murmur, stunned for a moment as the other agent got to his feet. Faster than she could blink, it turned into a brawl. Gremlins were vicious, jagged-fanged and razor-clawed. Scott seemed up for the challenge. And Allison cursed the moment their scuffle lost her her clean shot. She joined the fray, more focused on calling back a potentially rogue werewolf than knocking out her assailants.
Neither of them noticed when one of the gremlins disappeared.
It was impossible to miss Lois’ voice yelling through the intercom. “We’ve been spotted. Retreat. Immediate retreat!”
Scott had never fought like this before, trusting his instincts, learning his strength, all while knowing deep down that he had less control over his own motions than he wanted to. He turned, fast, swiped claws across an angry face before teeth penetrated his arm, moved too quick to give the gremlin another shot. He had no weapon, there was only him, and it was more than enough.
He could die like this, except he wouldn't. His wounds would heal almost immediately, a fair exchange for longevity, at least as far as Scott was concerned in this moment. He was very aware of Allison. She didn't fade into the background but became a part of the fray that was moving in slow-motion, or may as well have been, because Scott was two steps ahead of everything.
Except for the voice in his ear. So loud, it snapped Scott back, and his eyes were still bright, refracting a flickering street lamp with a cracked glass hood. The enemies around him and Allison were... contained. Scott looked at her, still for a moment, then turned and ran north, in the direction of the others, still shifted but unaware, hoping Allison was behind him, but if she was he was far ahead, and the sounds of the second ambush grew in volume. Just hang on.
Game Plan [Scott]
She’d lost count of how many times they’d gone into the field together. It didn’t matter who the assigned lead was, between them, it was always the same. They shared the responsibility of watching the rest of the team’s backs. They kept each other in check. There was a time when they’d weathered changes, when they were each other’s first and only choices outside the field, for situations they’d never had to consider before. That fell apart, and it had hurt them both when it did, but it never touched this. Here, with a goal in mind and directives that guided rather than dictated, they still made sense.
If she had to, Allison knew how to pull the plug on this excursion. That wasn’t power she took lightly.
They didn’t need to speak, making their way through the streets, steadily abusing the cracks in the gremlins’ defenses. Scott was faster now. She wondered if he intended to be, but adjusting their timing was an easy repair. She wondered if he thought she was noisy.
A single beep through their earpieces told them that their colleagues had reached their destination and were beginning extraction. Allison and Scott were 90 seconds away from theirs, but when they turned the corner, there were 7 gremlins between them and their target.
That was 7 more than they expected.
They weren’t supposed to be seen at all.
He could hear Allison better, every quick intake of breath, the soft pad of her shoes. It didn't worry Scott, though. The fact he could hear those things didn't mean anyone or anything else would be able to. And Scott could see better, too, the shapes of the buildings, outlines of bushes which should have been shrouded in shadow. It would have been exhilarating had this been some test exercise, but it wasn't, as the beep in Scott's ear reminded him. That was almost too loud. He cringed, but it didn't slow him down more than a second.
He was right beside Allison when they turned the corner, still privately celebrating the fact the others had hit their target when the first shot rang out.
Scott had his gun up in a second, Allison her weapon out, and they went in opposite directions, finding shelter behind buildings on opposing sides of the narrow street. Scott waited until he'd made eye-contact with her, made sure she wasn't hit, before looking around the corner, ducking back again quickly when another shot came. Scott returned fire, heard a ricochet and a thud.
This wasn't supposed to happen tonight. Scott found himself thinking that more often than not these days. It made him want to reevaluate his... everything. Allison was in sniper mode, and Scott was momentarily confused as his grip on his own weapon slipped, until he noticed it was because he had claws.
The first gremlin that came around the corner got swiped, and Scott scrambled back against the wall until he was standing again. His teeth weren't like his claws, he couldn't see them or feel them, or the shift in his eyes, from brown to gold, but the low growl that rose in his throat told him better than anything what was happening, and it felt good to close his hands around the creature's thin shoulders and throw it into the opposite wall like it weighed less than nothing.
Game Plan [Scott]
The Bureau took Allison to places part of her wished she’d never seen. Driving down main roads that looked like dark alleys, she read the stories of generations of poverty and social neglect. It was impossible to turn away. There was a responsibility that came with knowing.
There were figures in the shadows that she’d been trained to find. No children this late, and those who walked with their heads up were risking a bullet through their brains. She was not be the first who wanted to change things, but hopefully she would not be the last. Tonight though, their mission was to catch the type of monster that had horns.
"We’ll have to go the rest of the way on foot," Allison pointed out, as the roads grew thinner. On the roads, the streets sparkled with the glass shards broken street lights. It was like driving through diamonds. There was a lot they’d be able to stow their car in. It was a few blocks from their target site, but crossing that distance was something they’d prepared for. "Haxen Territory begins in about 200 meters. Joseph - Lois, you two head up the building on the north. Scott, you’re with me. We’ll work the one on the south. Stealth is priority."
The Haxen Gremlins were heavily involved in the distribution of powdered manticore scales in the area. A fine, white powder, consumers had no idea what they were dealing with when they made a sale. The sale of other drugs in the area had all but stopped. The police didn’t need to know that. The Bureau just needed more information before they could try shutting down the operation.
They’d prepared for this. Their intel was solid. They were as ready as they could possibly be, but breaking into a building (two buildings) filled with gremlins and all the security gremlin gold could buy was a far cry from a walk in the park. There was no better way to say ‘welcome back to the field.’
It was Scott's first mission since he'd traded immortality for claws and fangs on that nightmarish island, and he was glad it was Allison at his side. If he could trust anyone to have his back while remaining able to make calculated, tactical decisions, it was her. Having Isaac or Stiles around wouldn't have done Scott any good in this scenario; he had no idea how he was going to react, what his mind and body would do under duress. If it was bad, Allison would stop him.
But Scott didn't anticipate things going badly, and the deeper into enemy territory they got, the calmer he actually felt. This was familiar: a map on a small glowing screen in the palm of his hand, a final scan of the area's layout before all lights went off and the engine went silent. Scott's inventory was slightly different than it had been the last time he'd been in the field. He wasn't carrying any of his first aid gear, just a sidearm and his own speed and strength, which hadn't been field tested. No time like the present, right? But they were ready, and the primary objective was information retrieval. Scott got out of the van.
The night air was colder than normal for this time of year. He checked his earpiece before turning to wave the other two agents in the direction of the northern sector, turning quickly to fall into step beside Allison, walking in the opposite direction as the others. They stayed in the shadows. Just like old times, he thought, pointedly, glancing sidelong at Allison and allowing himself to smile for half a second, recalling for an instant how well she'd once heard him.
BIG BAD WOLF [a dark scott fanmix] [+listen]
it’s in your brain and in your skin, it’s making its way into your bloodstream. it’s strong and it’s dark, and you know you can’t fight it. there’s flesh and gore and fire and pain all around you and it never stops. you’re past the point of saving. all you can do is wait and pray; pray that it ends, pray that you don’t lose yourself before you find freedom. and if you’re not afraid of the big bad wolf yet, you should be.
Oh. [Scott]
Side-effect, supposed to be the most likely one.
If something happens, I’d rather some asshole who’s paid to do it stop me then you.
I… I’m tired of fucking up this way. The point is to not hurt you. If I had this earlier - maybe Hannah would still be here.
What if I don't want some asshole putting his hands on you?
You didn't - [He sighed.] Isaac, I get it, believe me. If you want to do this, you know I support you. [He paused.] Is sleeping out in the courtyard an option?
