Hello there! I'm Adaline Nolan, I've used some pretty complicated magic to travel into the past to help save my family and everyone else in Storybrooke from a dark future.     Glancing in the rear view mirror as she drove, Regina could see the sincerity of Adaline’s apology. “You’re forgiven dear, but don’t let it happen in future especially in front of your father, siblings, or grandparents,” she offered, her eyes already back on the road ahead of them. The journey to their third destination of the day honestly felt shorter than the task that followed. Putting up the barrier required a lot of focus, and a lot of magic, and since the price of this sort of magic was the user’s strength, Regina was growing weaker as the protective shield around the town grew larger and stronger.

    Finally, it became too much and Regina dropped to her knees trying to regain her breath. She needed the potion if she wished to finish, and she wished to finish. The barrier had to cover the entire town and make it so that no one could enter in any manner…land, water, air…she wouldn’t put it past Blue to try every angle, but he would fail. Downing the potion Regina felt her strength return even stronger than when they’d left the house. Accepting her father’s help she got to her feet and nodded to him and Adaline that now was the time for them to help.

    “Stop when you feel even remotely tired, understood Adaline? You too daddy,” she insisted giving them her “no argument” look so that they would understand the point was not up for debate. When they became tired, it would fall to her to use every last ounce of her energy to finish the barrier and ensure the safety of her family and the town full of people that hated her. Taking a breath and closing her eyes, she refocused her attentions and allowed her magic to flow forth towards the barrier.

     Adaline breathed a silent sigh of relief that she wasn’t being grounded or shouted at for her cursing. Mama had other things on her mind right now though, so she wasn’t considering herself totally off the hook yet even if mama said she was forgiven. “I won’t mama,” she agreed softly. Papa wouldn’t be pleased with her, Grandma Ruth less so probably and well, Grandma Cora would probably be proud or something. She wasn’t here right now though because they weren’t sure how she’d act if magic was back or if she could be trusted.

     As she saw her mother fall to her knees, she almost wished her grandmother was there to help them. With four of them, mama wouldn’t have to work so hard, but if Grandma Cora turned dark again with magic being back, she wouldn’t be much help anyway. Adaline it her lip and hovered over her mother as she downed some sort of potion and got to her feet seemingly back to normal. Finally, it was her and grandpa’s turns to join in. “Yes mama,” she nodded as she stepped forward and closed her eyes focusing on her positive emotions, her love for and desire to protect her family and friends. 

     Her magic sprang forth and she kept the thoughts strong as she opened her eyes and saw her mother and grandfather working on the barrier too. She could see it spreading to cover the entire town little by little. Adaline helped it grow in size and strength until she started to feel tiredness taking hold and shes stopped. Turning, she could see her grandfather had stopped too, but the barrier wasn’t totally complete. It was up to mama now...or they’d have to go home and rest coming back later to finish.

     “I was counting it as punishment for your cursing dear, and I’m still waiting for an apology,” Regina sassed back with a smirk as she turned the key in the ignition and the engine “roared to life” She waited to see that everyone was buckled up before she put her foot on the break and shifted into drive. Despite being the only ones out at this time, she signalled before easing up on the brake and sliding her foot over to the gas peddle applying light pressure as she guided the car off the shoulder and back onto the road.

     The drive to the town line wasn’t long at all. One of the perks of living in a small town. Pulling over to the shoulder, she parked the car and turned it off. After unbuckling and tossing her keys in her purse, she got out of the car and stepped up to the line. “You don’t help until I tell you, and not before the potion,” she reminded her father as she felt his presence behind her. “That goes for Adaline too, and if anything happens…watch over my children,” Regina added as she raised her hands and focused on everyone she loved and wanted to protect. Right away she felt her magic reacting to the emotions and expelling from her hands starting to create the barrier. Little by little the barrier grew.

     Oh, so her mama hadn’t missed that after all. Damn...she never could get anything by her and it was oddly comforting that was something that never changed. “I’m sorry for swearing mama, and I think my punishment was appropriate,” she offered sincerely. Only sincere apologies ever counted in mama’s books. Ones you did just because you were told to didn’t because you wouldn’t have apologized otherwise and didn’t really mean it. Sighing a little the teen settled into her seat for the short drive towards the town line.

     Once there, Adaline waited a few minutes after Grandpa got out before following. He’d said he’d wanted to talk to mama a moment privately. She hadn’t seen her grandfather say anything, just her mother talk to her before setting to work on the barrier. Eagerly Adaline unbuckled and hopped out before racing over and closing her eyes to think of everyone she wanted to protect. However, before her magic could come to the surface she felt a hand on her shoulder and stopped. “Not yet little bird, your mama will tell us when,” her grandfather told her in that tone that screamed wisdom. Nodding she restrained her desire to jump in.

     “Awesomely cool”…Regina made a mental note to work on expanding that girl’s clearly challenged vocabulary. At the moment though, that was the least of her worries. Once her family was same and protected she’d deal with everything else. Releasing a breath she hadn’t realized that she was even holding, Regina opened her eyes and turned to look at Adaline with a brow raised ever so slightly. She should have told her daughter to watch her cursing, but Regina too was guilty of it from time to time and it seemed fitting enough.

     “Should we remind her she could use magic to get back to the car?” Regina heard her father ask as Adaline had already jogged out of ear shot. With a hearty laugh Regina shook her head lightly. “Let her walk it out, we can consider it her punishment for cursing,” she retorted with a gin and a wink before she waved an arm over herself and disappeared in a cloud of purple smoke appearing next to the car. Her father appeared a few seconds after her. They both got back into the car to wait for Adaline to join them. Once inside Regina told her father about the potion she’d grabbed so that he would keep Adaline safely away until Regina needed help.

     Adaline was happy not to hear her mother shouting behind her about her cursing. She was taking that as a good sign she wasn’t getting punished over it. Feeling pretty safe, she slowed to a walk until she reached the car and she was surprised to find mama already in the driver’s seat with grandpa in the passenger seat beside her. They were both clearly waiting for her, but how had they gotten here before her? Oh....right, magic. Wow...way to go Adaline, smooth. Shaking her head at herself she got into the backseat. 

     “I’m counting that as my workout for the day and going to be annoyed at myself for the rest of the day,” Adaline announced as she buckled up. They weren’t going far, but safety first. “Ready mama, let’s get the barrier up before the early birds start waking up,” she stated with a smile eager to get the town protected so that she could go back to her own time with the future changed. She didn’t want to leave...she liked it here in this time, but she knew she’d have to leave and forget everything she’d done here.

     Seeing the approval of her daughter and her father was vaguely comforting for Regina. She bit her lower lip nervously and extended an uncharacteristically shaky hand to drop the open potion over the well as she silently hoped that this would work and magic would return. As afraid as she was of slipping into her old ways, or of someone using magic against her family, she was more afraid of loosing David, her parents, everyone she loved to a war of the Blue Fairy’s creation. Blue had to be stopped before she could even step foot in town. This was for the best.

     Sucking in a breath and closing her eyes she released the bottle and it dropped down, down, down, until it hit the ancient waters bellow, and then… No massive rush of magic hitting her as she’d expected, but as she moved to take a look down the well, a familiar purple cloud started to creep out. The cloud came from all directions moving out until it swept over her and she could feel the familiar spark of magic. More and more magic came out of the well until she couldn’t even see her daughter and father it was so thick. As it completely engulfed her she felt the rest of her magic return to her. When the cloud had passed over them and headed out to cover every inch of the rest of the town, she turned to her companions. “My magic’s back, did you feel yours return as well? The more of us that have it, the better our chance of getting up the barrier.”

     It felt like forever, but really it was less than a minute before they could see that the potion had actually worked on the well. Purple smoke drifted up and over the edges of the well and down onto the ground. It rose around her mother completely swallowing her before some drifted towards Adaline and her grandfather. Henry stepped closer to her reaching an arm forward and pulling her protectively too them. As the clouded drifted over her legs and feet she could feel the magic inside of her awakening, Henry too was experiencing it. As the cloud fully engulfed them their magic fully returned.

     The smokey cloud of purple finally cleared and she could see mama and Grandfather again. “That was...” Adaline paused unsure of the right words to fit the situation and feelings. “So awesomely cool,” she finally decided on. It seemed fitting. “Mine’s back too, so let’s go put up that Blue Bitch Blocking Barrier!” she announced gleefully, an uncharacteristic curse word slipping out in the alliteration she’d created. Adaline jogged off back towards the car, she hoped, before her mother could chastise her.

Thursday, August 16th, 2012 - Very Early Morning at Various Locations

     The idea that protecting the town, and more importantly, her family, meant bringing back magic had been hard for Regina to accept at first. For the duration of the curse and a week after, everyone had lived without it and she was worried about how they’d react to waking up to it’s return. How Ruby, Del, and any other werewolves would react was especially troubling as the full moon was tomorrow.

     David hadn’t listed any of those reasons when he’d tried to convince her not to pursue her current course of action. He was worried…worried about villains getting magic back, and even the heroes to because someone may come after her. Mostly though, he was worried about her being injured or dying trying to put up the barrier. She’d given birth to the twins at night, and it was currently morning, so she was still a bit shy of being even one week postpartum. The labour and birth had taken a lot out of her. David may have been right to worry, but she still had to try because if she didn’t he and many others could die.

     Being worried that David would try to talk her out of plan, she plotted secretly with Adaline and her father last night and they’d made their plans to meet long before anyone in Storybrooke, including her husband, would even be awake. By the time people were starting their day, magic would already be back and the barrier would have been up for over an hour at least.

     First, they’d needed to go to her vault and get the magic true love potion Mal had traded her back in the Enchanted Forest. She’d gone in alone and retrieve the bottle as well as a potion to restore her strength. Once she had what she needed it was back to the car and onward to the wishing well, which was a decent walk into the forest. “Are you both ready for this?” she asked as she stepped up to the well ready to drop in the vial.

     Adaline had been all for her mama’s plan from the very beginning, she was glad mama had agreed a barrier was necessary to protect the town and everyone in it. As much as she hated waking up normal early, and dreaded waking up even earlier than that, she knew it was what they had to do. Papa would never have agreed even if they’d said Grandpa was coming too. Of course, she and Grandpa were going more as back up if mama needed their help signal them to help. If Adaline or Grandpa saw mama getting too weak though, they’d agreed--alone in the car while mama was in her crypt getting the potion--that they would help without invitation.

     Once the car rolled to a stop at the forest, she got out and made the trek to the well. Could this count as her workout for the day, she wondered silently as they made their way to their destination. Adaline and her grandfather stayed close, but not as close as mama who was actually going to drop the bottle into the well. They’d be the second and third people to get their magic back. Mama would be the first and she’d probably have no trouble with it since she was the one dropping the bottle. “We’re ready mama,” Adaline said with a nod and grandpa echoed her sentiment. The two waited with baited breath.

“We’re in the same boat there, kid. I’m pretty sure my ma would very much like to ground me for life if she still could,” Arya chuckled slightly and leaned back in her chair. She couldn’t help but miss her mother a little, talking about her made her feel bad for how argumentative she had been lately. It was true, though. Gayle Fletcher didn’t take any shit from anyone, especially not her children but Arya knew how to play her cards right – most of the time.

The archer broke into a grin, “That’s brilliant! Do you know anything about archery?” She asked before ordering another cup of coffee. “I have a couple of books I could lend you?”

     Adaline bit her lower lip nervously, a trait she’d picked up from her mama. “Is your mother dead too?” Adaline inquired delicately. She did not want to upset Arya, so she was cautious in asking. There was just something about the way that Arya had said it that lead Adaline to believe that there was more of a story there. Maybe it really wasn’t any of her business anyway. It wasn’t like her knowing Arya’s story would help her on her quest in the past, but still, call it idle curiosity.

     Thinking for a moment she bit her lip lightly and shook her head a little. “Just the very basics. Pointy end of the arrow away from yourself, don’t draw back and aim it at/near anyone until you’ve learned...stuff like that,” she offered with a sheepish smile. Grinning again she nodded eagerly. “I’d love, and really appreciate that!” Adaline replied. She loved reading and learning so she would probably breeze through them.

Making Muffins

Saturday, August 18th, 2012 - Afternoon at the Nolan Mansion

     “Henry, look! I made muffins! I made blueberry-bran and apple-cinnamon, and there’s a batch of raspberry-white chocolate in the oven. What should I make next? Something with chocolate, or chocolate chips? Oh, or maybe something with peanut butter!” Adaline rambled excitedly to her technically older brother. Even if she was older in this time line, she still thought of Henry as her big brother and she really wanted his approval.

     The excitement of having so many people in the house and her parents now knowing her secret was really getting to her. She’d figured all the extra energy would be well spent baking, and who didn’t love muffins right? They were like cupcakes only sort of healthier and with no icing. Muffins were delicious she wanted to stuff her face with them all right now, but she was resisting the temptation of the muffins calling to her.

“I used to wish I was homeschooled! Although I’m pretty sure my mother wouldn’t have taken the amount of bull some teachers take,” Arya replied with a slight laugh. It was true though, her mother wouldn’t have settled for the grades she got, either.

The redhead shrugged, “Perhaps you could help us out at the range? It would be nice to have an extra pair of hands and I know Robb wouldn’t mind.” She smiled warmly.

     “I never tried any bull with my mama. We all knew she wouldn’t take it from anyone especially her kids,” Adaline replied laughing a little. Some things would probably never change. Her mama would always be strong and unwilling to take abuse from anyone. Well...almost anyone. Mama would take abuse from her own mother, and from Rumple sometimes, but they were really the only ones.

     Adaline rolled her lower lip lightly between her teeth, a habit she’d picked up from here mama. She did it when she was confused, nervous, contemplating something, and sometimes she just did it without even knowing it. This time it was a mix of confusion and contemplation. “I think I’d like that. I can text Regina or David to see if it’s all right,” she offered already digging out her phone.

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012 - Afternoon at the Nolan Mansion Posting Order: Adaline, Regina, and then David

     Adaline Nolan had been hoping that after the curse broke, magic would be returned and a barrier would be put up around the town, but as of yet, no such thing had happened. If Blue, Tamara, and Neal made it into town they’d start a war. Even if she managed to keep her father alive, others would die, and lives and relationships would be ruined. Even if Blue was stopped they’d have to kill her and perhaps her partners too and that would probably set off a chain of negative events with the Dark One.

     The teen had thought long and hard about what to do, and the best solution was to stop Blue and her allies before they even came in to Storybrooke. That meant Adaline had to act relatively fast because in her timeline they’d arrived on the new moon, a week and a day after the birth of her siblings, which meant that in two days they’d be here. Adaline had no more time to waste she just had to tell her parents the truth and hope for the best. She’d waited until her grandparents had all left--Ruth with Cora to go clothes shopping, and Henry with his namesake to check out the arcade and get pizza--then she’d gotten her parents and the twins into the living room where she had the bag she’d come to Storybrooke with already waiting. “All right, I have something important to tell you and I know it’s going to be hard to believe, but I need you to be really open minded and just try to listen. I’m your daughter, your biological daughter from the future and I can prove it.”

A Little Too Loud

He shrugged and took a sip of his Irish coffee. “Appreciated… Over rated if you ask me, respected is better.” He shook his head. What was wrong damn ? He was talking to a little girl… Well, a teenager and he was being cynical after only a few words. He felt like he really was some sort of huge asshole. “Sorry ‘bout that. And I’m note the party type either.” He chuckled “They say I tend to ruin the mood and as I usually steal the prettiest ladies first, guys refuse to go at any party with me.” He laughed, not taking this too seriously but still… It was a bit true.

“Adaline…? Strange name. Modern thing I guess. I’ve heard of Adeline but Adaline is a first. Original at least.” Then he realised she called him Dr and smiled “Does my reputation comes ahead of me ?”

    “Well, as Mayor I think she already feels respected so she’d probably like to feel appreciated instead,” Adaline pointed out. Everyone wanted to feel whatever they were missing in their own life. It was odd that a Doctor would wish to feel respected, you’d think they’d get a lot of that in their profession. In Doctor Whale’s case...it sort of made sense especially with his cockiness about parties and ladies. “You know...it’s impossible for people to truly respect you when you don’t respect yourself,” she pointed out before popping a cherry tomato in her mouth to appear as if she was just casually conversing rather than making an aimed comment.

    Adaline raised a brow ever so slightly--much like her mama often did--at the comment about her name. Modern? Her first name was probably as old as her middle one. “Actually, it was introduced to England by the Normans in the eleventh century and was super common during the Middle Ages, then it vanished until the Victorian Gothic revival when the spelling variations emerged and it’s not overly popular now, neither is my middle name.” Her mama had gone with the spelling variation they’d used in a movie she’d fallen in love with and papa had agreed and of course they hadn’t picked it just because of that, they’d liked the meaning too.

    Crap...how did she explain already knowing people in this land when she’d never met them? She had to be polite too so she couldn’t say some of the stuff she’d heard or knew about him. “Maybe it does...or maybe I’m psychic,” she teased with a wink. Of course, if challenged she could rise to the occasion with some tidbit she recalled that she doubted others would know.

🐦 Don’t Send Me Away 🐦

     It was just an ordinary day for the Mayor, at least that’s what she’d thought when she had woken up that morning. She had a few meetings one before and one after lunch, in the sweet spot that she seemed to be free of her morning sickness. Both meetings were done now and she was focusing on paperwork and watching the clock. Pregnancy was draining, Regina was ready for a nap. She did not want to appear weak to the town though, so she wasn’t about to chance curling up on the couch to take one. God forbid someone walked in unannounced and saw her…she’d never live it down.

     Instead she found herself continuously glancing at the clock to see if it was still too early to leave early. She’d been leaving earlier the past little while, but she always made sure she’d put in a full day of work in and that it wasn’t so early that people would question her abilities. A deep sigh passed over her lips as she saw the time. Still too early to leave. Biting her lip she focused her attention back to the paperwork. There were moments when she really missed coffee, she could desperately use a cup to refocus.

     Maybe a different task would help distract her from the clock and find her more productive than the paperwork currently was. Answering e-mails…she’d been putting that off for a while. First, she’d text David to let him know Henry’s Archery lesson had been cancelled, but that Marco had offered to pick Henry up after school and to take him and August to his workshop. He’d drop Henry off in time for dinner. That done she moved onto responding to e-mails. She’d barely made it through the third when a knock sounded.

     “Come in,” she announced only vaguely glancing up from the computer screen to see who was interrupting her progress. Social worker, damn it, there goes her nap. Social workers only ever visited when Liam and his gang had gotten into some deep trouble, which meant hours of work fixing it for herself and either David or Graham. “Well, what did they do this time? Is Mr. Jones finally pressing charges for one of their pranks?” she asked as she hit send on the completed e-mail and refocused her attention solely on the social worker.

     “For once, I’m actually not here about them. You and Sheriff Nolan are signed up as foster parents, and we have a sixteen year old in need of placement,” the social worker explained. The Mayor sighed deeply. Any other time in the past twenty eight years she would have said yes without hesitation, but right now? Regina already had a pretty full plate, being pregnant with twins, a mother to a ten year old with an overactive imagination, a wife…cook, cleaner, Mayor…

     She played so many roles she just wasn’t sure she could handle another. Teens were a handful, and she already had enough stress. There had to be someone else that could do it, who would have more time for the teen. “I’m afraid David and I couldn’t possibly. Any other time we would have of course agreed, but with twins on the way and Henry as he is, we’ve already got so much to cope with,” she offered regretfully.

    Adaline stood near the door to her mother’s office listening to what she almost knew for certain was going to be a train wreck. The fact that the conversation had even been momentarily derailed to talk of Liam/Peter Pan and his gang/Lost Boys was a bad sign, it was going to throw a curve ball at the social worker. A curve ball that Adaline had hoped the woman would recover from, but if that pitiful sentence was her big way of selling Adaline, she was doomed for a Boston Group Home. The woman didn’t sound like she could even sell the cutest puppy in the pet shelter!

    All right, it was time to take action. She wasn’t going to sit around and let some, to quote her mother, “bumbling idiot,” decide her fate. The entire future of Storybrooke and everyone in it was depending on her and she couldn’t let them, her family, or herself down. Time to plead her own case. Regina had said no to the social worker’s poor sell, but she may say yes if Adaline made a better case. She straightened her clothes and her hair to be presentable before she took a steady calming breath. Her mama had sounded regretful, convincing her would be easy Adaline reasured herself as she pushed open the door to her mother’s office.

    “Excuse me, Madame Mayor,” Adaline inserted herself carefully as she stepped inside. Oh wow, her mama was even prettier now than she was in the future, and not just because she had her older siblings growing in her belly. Mama just looked so much happier if not a little tired. Papa made mama even better than she was without him, Adaline could just tell by looking at her. It was going to be amazing to see them interact with each other.

    “Hello, I’m Adaline Lonan, I’m sorry for eavesdropping, and I know that you have a lot on you plate right now, but I’m really quiet, respectful, helpful. I wouldn’t be any trouble at all. I’m great with babies and I’ve been home-schooled all my life, gotten good grades and could tutor your son in almost any subject he may need help with,” Adaline rambled off a list of her good qualities hoping to make a good impression. Mama would say yes now wouldn’t she. “Please, I don’t want to go to another group home or foster parents who only keep kids for the money.”

Arya nodded slightly, not sure how to respond to such a statement. She didn’t know much about losing someone you love - at least not to death.

She was immediately glad for the change of topic and offered a small smile, “It’s good that you enjoy it, most kids your age hate it.” Arya included. She had hated school with a passion and argued constantly with her mother over why she had to go. She would have much rather just stayed outside all day.

The archer’s smile broke into a grin at the mention of archery, “You should most definitely take up archery.” She paused for a moment, “Perhaps you won’t have to ask them.”

     “Oh I’ve definitely noticed,” Adaline laughed softly. Most kids complained all day and she’d see them watching the clock waiting for the period to end. The only time people weren’t watching the clock was when they were in gym, art, drama, or one of those other “fun” classes. “I’d probably hate it too if I hadn’t been home-schooled my entire life. Real school is just so novel to me.”

     Archery definitely seemed fun, a lot in town seemed to do it too, many at the armature level, but that still counted. Granny was the only one she’d heard about using a crossbow though, that must not be as popular. “I’d have to ask them for the money to take them or to get a job to pay for them myself. Regina probably would be fine with me getting a job, but she likes keeping tabs on where we are.”
