Case #1
A little girl came to us with a heavy book. My paralegal took her to me and the little girl smiled at me proudly.
"I saved those people," she said smiling.
"What people?" I asked her.
"The people in this book!" The girl exclaimed happily and shoved the book towards me. I opened it and saw that there were names. A lot of names and the book is filled with them.
"Can you explain to me what happened?" I asked the girl.
"A old lady told me that I can save those people. My brother's name is in it too! I can read very well and I'm only five! Ms Lacy taught me to read. She very good!" The girl chuckled.
"I bet she is!" I smiled back.
"Anyways," she continued, "The old woman said these people are doomed to die, Mr Ghost, what does doomed mean? The old woman said somethinf bad will happen,"
"Doomed does mean that something bad will happen and you cannot escape it," I explained to her. She took out a small notepad and wrote something in it.
"What are you writing?" I asked her. She's adorable. I wonder how she got here. She doesn't look to be sick or anything.
"It's my vocabulary!" She said slowly. "Ms Lacy said that if I write new words, it will expand my knowledge of words!" She exclaimed and stretched her hand in a circle.
I chuckled and asked her to continue her story.
"The old woman said that only I can save them. Then, my brother got sick and I went to the book a d his name is red. So is everyone's name. Then a word appeared. A life for millions, that's what the book said. I wracked my brain and it clicked. So I ran outside just in time for a carriage drive by. It ran me over! That was scary but then your Ms Paralegal showed me that the people in the book were saved."
I was in shock. This little girl, sacrificed herself to save people she didn't even know. Why? Why this girl? I don't understand! This job is so hard. Sometimes I don't understand why things happen the way they do. I didn't know I was crying until she came over to me and hugged me.
"Don't cry Mr Ghost. I save those people! Don't cry," she comforted.
