Rather than fighting for every woman’s right to feel beautiful, I would like to see the return of a kind of feminism that tells women and girls everywhere that maybe it’s all right not to be pretty and perfectly well behaved. That maybe women who are plain, or large, or old, or differently abled, or who simply don’t give a damn what they look like because they’re too busy saving the world or rearranging their sock drawer, have as much right to take up space as anyone else. I think if we want to take care of the next generation of girls we should reassure them that power, strength and character are more important than beauty and always will be, and that even if they aren’t thin and pretty, they are still worthy of respect. That feeling is the birthright of men everywhere. It’s about time we claimed it for ourselves.

Teachers are not just teachers. Teachers are so much more. But until we as people are impacted personally by this care-giving aspect role that describes a true educator, we really don’t understand how important it is. What I mean by this is… Until your child has been bullied, you don’t realize what it means to have a teacher calling you to see what they can personally do to rectify the situation. Until your child has been without a lunch, you don’t realize how much it means to have a teacher offer half of hers to your child. Until your child has been excluded, you don’t realize how much it means to have a teacher notice your child and seek them out. Until your child has been owing money for an event, you don’t realize what it means to have a teacher notice and make up the difference in the amount. Until your child has lost a loved one, you don’t realize how much it means to have a teacher take the time to make a homemade card for your son or daughter.

That last one…losing a loved one. I was that child with a teacher who took time out to see me, who made me a card and who comforted me, who made me feel normal at school despite of everything going on in my life. That teacher, she’s why I’m a teacher.
