Just Crafter, drawn using the "shape-first" method. I think that’s what the technique is called.

I wrote a post about Crafter's family and got inspired to design the crafters' robes. Drop some ideas in the comments for what else I could create based on this wonderful book series.

The post turned out quite long cause I went on at length about every single reference.

Honestly my hyperfixation is getting a bit out of hand. No joke I actually learned to draw specifically just to channel that energy somewhere (I'm still learning, though...). It’s a bit rough, but it’s something.

And my english might be very strange—it’s not my native language, and although I rarely use a google translator, I do use one occasionally; please don't focus on the mistakes.

The art doesn't exactly stick strictly to canon. The books described their clothing very simply (just a black robe with a gray stripe), but in real life, I imagine the outfits would look pretty elaborate.

After all, they're essentially the leaders of their villages. (imo, the "mayors" rank below them—serving merely as the face of the village, something like a parliamentary monarchy, you know?)

Notes:

The attire is not a single piece but consists of a robe and a cape;

A random headcanon based on the design: the older a crafter, the longer the hem of the robe (whereas the cape always reaches the floor);

A random headcanon that informed the design: embroidery on various parts of the garment signifies the NPC's achievements and changes depending on the biome where his village is located. In the version I drew for Crafter (in my vision, he and his village are east slavic—there has to be a reason for him being a blue-eyed blond), the Svarog Square (1) is depicted on the sleeves of both the robe and the cape.

This is the symbol of the Slavic blacksmith god Svarog (chosen specifically to reference to Smithy). As the patron of crafts and creative labor he embodies wisdom and mastery. Placing the symbol on the sleeves highlights industriousness and insight—at least, in my vision.

The trim of the cloak (2) features numerous "Perun’s Axes"—symbols shaped like small battle-axes that represented the strength, protection, and patronage of the thunder god; they aided warriors on campaigns and guarded their homes. Since Crafter is a [very] good warrior, I deliberately included this symbol on his outer garment, reflecting the ancient Slavic custom of wearing it as a protective amulet close to the body.

On the collar (3) is the Odolen'-trava (Odolen'-grass) symbol. No, it’s not a swastika. Not by a long shot. It was frequently used in weaving and embroidery. It served as a means of purification and protection against illnesses that might hinder a craftsman's work. And here’s a headcanon: after the events of Saving crafter, he embroidered it onto the garment himself.

On the hem of the robe (4) is the Rodimich symbol. It protected warriors and men engaged in physically demanding trades, and bestowed the wisdom of a family patriarch. I doubt Crafter had children, so we’ll focus only on the first two aspects. Incidentally, this ornament (? what is the proper term for it?) was traditionally embroidered on clothing or carved into wood to preserve the lineage and maintain a connection to one’s ancestors. That’s another reference; I imagine ancestral memory holds great importance for him.

I didn't overthink the footwear; I simply drew him wearing the kind of leather boots warriors in Kievan Rus used to wear. Yes, there are that many references. I’ve really been carrying around the idea that Crafter is a Slav (an *Eastern* Slav—Eastern. believe me, that matters) for a very long time, and I needed to make up for that lost time.

I also decided against drawing a sword and scabbard (even though he has them—I read Confronting the Dragon very carefully). That would have dragged on forever, because I’d have wanted to make everything as authentic as possible, add a million sacred patterns that no one would even notice, and write fifty pages about them. Let’s just assume this is what Crafter wears during peacetime.

And please, ignore the hand—it was just a sketch, but I’m not very good at drawing them. Just think of it as a mannequin.

There’s one massive, infuriating plot hole in the GK999 series that bothhhhhhhhhers me.

In invansion of the overworld, we learn that Crafter is the oldest NPC on his server. But in one of the later arcs, when GK travels back 100 years, it turns out that Smithy was alive during that period—and Smithy is, *ahem*, Crafter’s great-great-grandfather.

Let’s assume everyone there has kids at around age 20. That gives us this timeline:

Smithy → some great-grandfather (20 years)

some great-grandfather → Carver (20 years)

Carver → some parent (20 years)

some parent → Crafter (20 years)

In short, that adds up to about 80 years—give or take. Either way, that would make Crafter somewhere between 20 and 25 years old.

If we bump the age up to 24–26 (which is more realistic), the math gets even worse, as it would mean Crafter was only 13 to 18 years old [at the time of the invasion of the overworld].

I Googled which century the events of Minecraft might theoretically take place in—considering the use of primitive weaponry like swords and bows, along with other living conditions—and the consensus points to the 17th century. Back then, people typically had their first child around the age of 20.

I lowered that age to 16 or 17—which was rare even for that era—and multiplied 16 by four generations to get 64; subtracting that from 100 gives us 36, which is roughly Crafter's actual age. Lol.

In fact, he could easily be the oldest NPC on his server, even at that age. I suspect that, around the time he met GK, the mortality rate on his specific server might have been extremely high. You know—war, and all that.

I like to draw parallels with real historical events in my musings. To put things in perspective: during World War II, the average age at death was around 30—or 20 to 25 for military personnel.

In any case, these are just my own deductions, since the ages of the protagonists—with the exception of the GK—were never stated; however, I’ve come to the conclusion that Crafter is likely 36 at most. (naturally, that applies to the time of the iotO events; for subsequent arcs, I lean towards an age of around 12–13)

Mr. Cheverton/Feynman/Monkey, I have some questions.

Thats exactly how i've viewed them ever since the battle for the nether.

it’s a real shame that Crafter wasn't written as having ptsd after being held captive by Malakoda (GK has a scar on his head from mlcd; Crafter just has one because - um, he been through hell). He definitely would have had it, in my opinion. just a reminder: according to canon, his eyes go dull when he’s under stress. GK’s eyes are gray, or, to quote, the color of iron.

I love this duo. I absolutely adore them.

Tbh, I have so many headcanons about their friendship that I can’t even begin to organize or write them all down. I really want to draw a proper piece of art featuring them. Maybe later.

Chibi Erecoda

Erebus gives malacoda an iron rose, and malacoda gives erebus a wither rose.

A sudden headcanon: when he gets flustered (yes, he’s capable of that), its not his face that turns red, but the scars under his eyes and the tips of his tentacles. Check out the art.

I actually planned to draw this scene for Valentines day, but I couldn't wait—so here it is. I really love my design for malacoda I adore it. Btw he has a humanoid form, just like Erebus

I’d also like to comment a bit on the designs

Malacoda’s hair is mobile (he can control its movement) and very long; when relaxed, it coils around his tentacles, sometimes making it look like an extension of them.

He also has nine tentacles (like the ghasts in canon), though some got hidden behind his hair while I was drawing him.

Yes, he has legs and can fly—take a closer look. I actually made him shorter than Erebus, but he gains a height advantage precisely because of his ability to fly.

He has the same scars on his body as he does on his face.

And I accidentally drew a crown of thorns on him instead of a regular crown lol. Doesn't look too bad, right?

Erebus has the most fucking badass crown of all the monster kings, as well as magnificent hair (though Malacoda’s is cooler—at least in terms of its properties). ***For some reason, I imagine all the MKs have either long hair or hair that’s been hacked off really unevenly with a sword or something sharp.

Clothing that covers him up almost entirely, so that minimal water touches him when it rains.

I’ve never understood why his teleportation particles are depicted as purple in the books; to me they seem closer to scarlet.

About 10 layers in ibis paint went into his crown...............！！(゜ロ゜ノ)ノ

This is my favorite pairing in the gk999 series (one that I think is very well-supported by canon Lmao), so I plan to draw more art for it.

It’s not as if I’ve ever been able to shake the thought that BftN is a *children’s* bestseller—one that devotes several pages to the strangulation of a 12-year-old child, and was written by that child’s father, to boot.

This book is my favorite in gk999 series.
