Sorry for the radio silence — IRL has beat me to bits — but I have some good news!

The novel that I've been working on, Lies of the Pagoda, is going to be released on the platform Scribble Hub! I'll be dropping chapters on the website irregularly, but since I've already pretty much written the entire novel (just editing things here and there) you bet that the whole thing is going up eventually!

Hey everyone! I'm glad to say that so many people have reached out to me for beta reading, and I'd just like to thank everyone for their kind efforts!

However, I've been getting a lot of the same questions. I'm really busy IRL, and I'm finding it harder to give prompt replies (sorry ya'll), so I'd like to address them here!

Q: What's your word count?

Nice! So, I haven't yet finished editing the latter half of my novel (hence why I've only shared up to chapter 20 on the google doc), but it's estimated to be around 90k words. This number might change in the future, though.

Q: What's the genre?

Fantasy, elements of sci-fi. There are also some elements of romance, but... yeah. It's not a romance.

Q: Can you pay me/leave me a review in exchange for beta-ing?

Without too many spoilers, I first got the idea for the magic system from A Certain Scientific Railgun. As for the competition elements, it was from The Hunger Games and Throne of Glass. I won't say more for now, as that heads into spoiler territory.

Hey everyone! I'm currently editing one of my novels, Lies of the Pagoda. It's a work that I'm really passionate about, and I'd love to get some feedback or comments!

The Pitch:

Shen Zhiyuan has made the stupidest decision of her remarkably short life: she has entered the Pagoda Competition, where she must win against the world’s greatest and most powerful without a drop of magic in her veins.

But she can’t back down. The deadly tournament’s prize, the True Reality, is the only magic that can save her brother — comatose and doomed to an existence worse than death just for her sake — and she would stop at nothing to bring him back alive and whole.

To win, Shen Zhiyuan will have to betray and manipulate her way to the top. But the competition isn’t what it seems and demands of her far more than just murder: it wants her humanity, and she’ll have to cross lines she never thought herself capable.

Without any powers of her own, can Shen Zhiyuan defeat the predators that view for the same prize? And more importantly, is winning worth the person she must become?

Genre: fantasy, action.

show don't tell...

...is shit.

Personally, I'd rephrase that as know what to tell.

When it comes to descriptions or detailing actions, it's most important to decide how much the POV character knows, and what you want to convey.

For example, if I have a character that's furious, I will tell the audience that they are furious, that red is clouding their vision, and that they are trembling, hands in fists: i.e., everything that they are explicitly aware of. Because I think they'd know if they're angry, like a normal person...

But I won't tell the audience that they are jealous, because they don't currently know that they're in love with their best friend. They only know that it's upsetting them, and that seeing the best friend kiss someone else feels wrong. So that's all I'll tell the audience, and leave the rest up to context and nuance, because audiences are not stupid. They can figure that bit out.

As a general rule (but remember that there are always exceptions), it is best to only describe or tell what the POV character is aware of, to the level that they have self-awareness. You could think of it like how a child or emotionally stunted individual might not have a perfect grasp of their self-awareness and hence not realise what emotions they are experiencing — and that's when you don't explicitly state their emotional state — while an assassin or trained politician who's constantly monitoring their own and others' emotions might immediately identify that they're feeling upset, sad, happy, or furious.

All information should be filtered through their perspective, and hence the description and prose should reflect this.

Please, for the love of everything fruity and whimsical, do not shy away from writing 'I'm furious' or 'I want to cry' because an english teacher told you 'show don't tell'.

I think of a character's perspective of their story as the ocean — while you don't tell the audience the deep-sea currents, or the true, underlying cause of their actions and emotions unless the character is also aware, you can instead describe the water's surface. Describing or telling the audience things that the characters are explicitly aware of, as though they are someone swimming in the shallows — the waves, the warmth of the sun, things that are immediately relevant and known — is more immersive.

If you ONLY ever describe actions, and never state a character's thoughts, they are more likely to come off as emotionless. They should be making emotional judgements on their surroundings, other characters, and events, because all of these things will reflect their characterisation and context. The medium of writing is unique from other mediums in that it allows introspection into characters' thoughts; if you do not utilise this, you are essentially writing a screenplay.

tips for twists

When writing plot, thematic or other twists, try considering these points and tips!

Why are you writing this twist? Always remember that a thematic twist is going to be handled differently to a plot twist, and both will need a different setup. A plot twist will deal primarily with actions and directly influence the story's plot structure, while a thematic twist will utilise the characters' beliefs and setting in tandem with the plot.

Establish the expectation. To subvert something, there has to be an expectation. For example, if I want to do a thematic twist or narrative subversion where the princess rescues the dragon from the prince, I'm using the expectation of the standard 'boy-saves-girl' story. Likewise, when writing a twist you must establish what you're going to twist.

Have setup. Please, for the love of all that is holy and fruity, do not pull a deus-ex-machina or reveal that the killer is the main character's friend's uncle's brother-in-law's granddaughter. Instead, plant small clues (like, just make sure that it's there, but you can have the POV character gloss over it or mention it in passing) to establish plausibility.

Show the consequences. A good twist will have impact, whether that's moving the plot forwards or crushing the protagonist's hopes and dreams. Maybe the reveal of the killer re-opens a closed case. Maybe the protagonist loses all hope after realising that the power they have is ultimately useless. Try to have your characters exhibit appropriate reactions, as they will indicate the importance and scale of the twist.

Hope this was helpful! Keep that audience on the edge of their seats :D
