āYou think?ā She looked back to her painting and examined it again. Hmm. There was still something missing.Ā āI think there might be too much blue. And, here, this part,ā she pointed with the end of the brush,Ā āmy paint was too watery.ā It was always easy to criticise oneās own work, but criticising the work of others was a different story altogether.
āItās a work in progress anyway.ā Nixie shrugged and turned to smile at Ahto again.
āDo not worry for too blue. It is good,ā Ahto said, motioning towards Nixieās painting.Ā āBut watery, yes. It is mild watery.ā
He smiled down at her when she smiled at him.Ā āIt is a good work so far.ā

Julien knew that they would not set sail for a few days, so he decided to make his rounds, stopping first at the painterās hut. Julien was a man of taste and enjoyed collecting artwork just as much as the other enjoyed collecting paints. His home, which was only used on his off days (what a shame), had several of Ahtoās paintings along the walls. He had been collecting some for the Captainās cabin as well, figuring some artwork could brighten the space up a bit.
When the other opened the door for him and greeted him with open arms, he was quick to respond in kind, wrapping his arms around the large man. āDear, Ahto, you flatter me. Iām the one who is honored by your greeting.ā
Ahto loved that his friend actually would return the hugs, instead of finding it something awkward between two men. He operated so much on physical contact that he sometimes forgot that others werenāt as open to it as he was.
"No, no, I insist that I am,ā Ahto said, with a huge grin.Ā āWhat is the cause for visit? It has been so long, friend. I worry.ā
āI was one of the very first mermaids created by Calypso. That rumor is true. And no, I am not the actual goddess of Amphitrite. I was named after her.āĀ
āOne of the first? You donāt look your age, maāam.ā
āGood.ā Ahto was kind, and Nixie could never take advantage of his kindness to benefit herself. She placed the wooden end of the brush in her mouth and chewed thoughtfully whilst observing her work. Turning her attention back to Ahto, she spoke. āThereās something missing⦠what do you think?āĀ
Ahto looked over her work, trying to come up with a proper critique. He was awful at them, too busy trying not to step on any toes.Ā āIt is good. Very wonderful painting.ā

Ahto had been painting still life all that afternoon. The influx of pirates prevented him from heading out to his usual places, as they frequently harassed him and what he tried to paint. He couldnāt use the workers at the brothel for models when they were all taken up by the pirates for theirĀ āintended purpose.ā He couldnāt paint the sea, because their ships blocked views. It was frustrating. All he could do was paint from his small hut of a studio. Hearing someone approach, Ahto knew that he needed to go and answer the door. If only it was so easy to walk there.
Pushing himself up, he limped over to the door.Ā āJulien, friend,ā he said with a huge grin, opening his arms out to give the shorter man a warm bear hug.Ā āYou are giving me honor with a visit.ā
āIt matters not. Iāve one use for themā I wonāt need to see them again. Itās a much more efficient use of time than trying to convince some human Iām in love with him and swimming off with his progeny once I get what Iāve come for. Far less cruel, at that.ā
āFair enough, Princess.ā
āI couldnāt just take it from you.ā Nixie shook her head.Ā āI insist that we share. We can take turns if youād like?ā
āIf you must insist,ā Ahto said to her, bowing his head in defeat. If she wanted to share, he wasnāt going to stop her from wanting that.Ā
āI am far greater than goddesses.ā
āYou do know who I am?ā
āI know what rumors say you are. Feel free to set the record straight for me.ā
āPerhaps I shall visit this placeā shorten my search, be done with it and go home.ā
āYou wonāt find the most decent people there. Iām sure even the King wonāt approve of them.ā
What rumors?
āI just hear that youāve scorned goddesses. But I could be wrong.ā
Nixie laughed and nodded her head in a joking manner. āPerhaps we will! But Iād place my bet on you to win the fight, so Iām happy to share.ā
"Please, I do not fight. You may have this place."
"Thank you, I suppose. I hope this āadventure,ā as you call it, is short-lived. Iāve heard tale of houses where one can purchase anotherāsā¦company. Is that true?"
"Very true. I have a close friend, he visits that place often."
"It has always solved my problems, but suit yourself."
"But are your problems solved? If the rumors are correct, you're very far from solved in your problems."
"The light is perfect here." Nixie mumbled as she flicked the brush against the canvas. "I wish I could get this spot everyday."
"Will we be fight for this spot?" Ahto said in his broken English, towering over the woman with a smile.
"You are a wonderful man. If anyone gives you a hard time, send them my way. Iāll give them something to fear."
"No, I don't think that fighting fire with fire will do any good. I appreciate the offer, though."
"What, you mean those scoundrels do not inspireĀ you?ā Makaya laughed, but it was a hollow sound.
Ahto shook his head. "It is hard, being inspired by such cruel."
