Waiting in Vain. All day I hit the refresh button expecting to find a reply to the reply that wasn't necessary. the reply where i absolve him of guilt because carrying other peoples weight is what I do best. a martyr who lets go and then wishes to cut off the hands that freed him. i write this with a bitter taste in my mouth, eyes filled with sleepless nights, a month's worth of no self worth, and a life long habit of crumbling at the sight of abandonment. Taking shots like this feels a little intrusive at times but it is something I have to come to terms with as a photographer. As a writer, I am very open and honest and the things I keep to myself are usually the things that I don't know how to heal yet, but otherwise, you all know I'm an open book. (So much healing and growth come from sharing our stories) On the other hand though, sharing other people's stories and spaces is something I try to be a lot more sensitive to which sometimes results in missing a perfect shot in an attempt to avoid making someone else feel uncomfortable. I find myself caught between emotions and thoughts in my daily life, always torn, and similarly, within my craft, I am usually caught between wanting to be more present, trying to be less intrusive, and wanting to capture my own feelings throughout my adventures- sometimes at the expense of others. I have to remind myself constantly of the why behind every photograph and paragraph. Cuba was not an escape as I thought it would be, it was a reminder. It was a magical, pensive, purging and both empowering and humbling time for me that reminded me so much about how ideas of inferiority are taught by society. There wasn't a single woman I met who wasn't strong and loud and proud, there was not a single poc who wasn't beautiful and full of a power that we lost in the midst capitalism and forced assimilations and that are slowly starting to reclaim.
