HEALTH AND SAFETY
1) Keep camera equipment away from water when filming, be careful when filming water.
2) Be cautious not to trip over any wires.
3) Make sure that there is no loose wires.
4) Keep food away from camera equipement so not to break the equipment.
5) Make sure that the equipment does not overheat
WRITTEN TREATMENT:
My ident will be a mixture of different shots and scenes put together to help the audience see what film feels like to me. I will use sound effects and the sound from the film. I will include a variety of shots including water running, contra-zooming into a light bulb and nature shots. This will give the audience a sense of warm (light) and cold (water) which helps to show how cinema can help you to feel different things. I will use films such as Brighton Rock, Pulp Fiction, and Grease. I will show the feeling in love for Brighton Rock by having a cup of water with paint going into it, the paint swirling around the water will help to give the feeling of love.
DESIGNS OF IDENTS
Density of Info
The TV channel must inform the company that makes the ident the information they wish to be presented and how it should be put together. This is very important because the information is one of the most important things that the ident is used for. For example to show the times of the shows, they may have to tell the creators which shows in particular to show and at what time because they are the most popular and viewed shows.
Space & Time
Time is very important to keep in mind when making an ident because the length of the ident needs to match the needs of the channel it is playing on. For example a childrens channel such as ‘CBeebies’ has a very short ident with bright colours and high pitched sounds, this is because a child has a shorter attention span and needs something quick and appealing to the eye instead of a longer ident with something more intellectual because they would get bored. Channels like CBeebies idents usually last around 9 secs however channels with a target audience of older people such as BBC 1 can have idents which last 35 secs. Channels like BBC 1 have longer idents because adults have a longer attention span and need something more interesting to watch so that it’s more memorable. Also, these channels are more likely to have voice-overs to tell them about shows and times as older people could be more interested in watching particular programmes.
Screen Tempo
This is the speed in which the ident moves; this means how fast the cuts are and how quick the shots move. This can be linked to what I have already said about younger and older audiences. A younger audiences ident would be quick cut to make it faster paced whereas an older audience would have a slower ident with slower animations and cuts to make it easier to see what is happening.
Interaction with viewers
It is important for a channel to interact with their audience so that they are reminded of the channel and know what is going on with show times and what is happening in the programmes. For example a more recent way that a channel interacts with their audience is via social media such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The most common would be twitter because the audience can send tweets to them about the show and write hashtags which can start to ‘trend’ which helps get the show more well known. Other ways of interacting is through the voice over, which will tell the audience about show times and talk about things that happened in the show and what they thought of it.
Information
One of the main reasons for channels to use idents is to give the viewers information about the channel. For example to tell them when there is any changes to the channel, to tell them what shows will be aired and at what time. If there is a film they will also give information on this such as the main actors, the director and any awards which the film has won. This information is most commonly told via a voice over or as text on the screen.
Entertainment
An ident has to be entertaining to make it enjoyable to watch and memorable. This can be done by using comedy on comedy channels and more dramatic visuals on film channels. For example the channel ‘Film4′ have an ident which shows a man run away a shed in slow motion as it explodes behind him. This is entertaining as it is very visually appealing to film lovers.
DEFINITIONS
2D ANIMATION:
This is the traditional animation style where the only way that the image can move is along the X and Y axis and cannot move along the Z axis. This type of animation has often been replaced with 3D animation however it is used in TV shows, films and advertisments.
3D ANIMATION:
3D animation means that the subject can move along the Z axis, making the subject to seem real to the viewer. 3D animation has recently been replacing many forms of 2D animations and is used lots in TV, film, and video games.
STOP MOTION:
Stop motion is where lots of pictures are placed together in order to make an animation. This animation takes a lot of time to complete because many images must be created and all very similar to the last image so that when it is cut the movement seems more smooth. It also takes a long time to cut because the amount of images they have to cut together.
LAYERING:
This is a graphics technique which helps you to keep layers organized. The layers are put on top of each other dependent on the placing of the layer (e.g. the top will show in front of the other layers). As well as for organization, layering can be used to achieve different effects.
EDITING SOFTWARE:
Editing software is used for most of the post-production. It is used for cutting the film together and to add effects, audio and image.
MEMORY:
It is important to make sure that you have enough memory on your devices when making a film. The higher quality the shot the more storage it will take up. You will need more than one type of storage device to make sure that no work is lost and so there is always a back up to put work onto if the other device runs out of space.
FILE FORMATS:
You must think about file formats when making a film as not all forms of media can be saved on all file formats. It’s important to save them as the correct format as some files will not work on different editing programs.
SCHEDULING:
Scheduling time with your film crew and cast is important to keep the production organized and to get it finished on time. It also helps to make sure that everyone you need is at the shoot at the correct time.
MEETING DEADLINES:
As a production team you must work efficiently to complete a piece of work in time for the deadline which the client has set. If you don’t meet this deadline your work could not get used and money would be wasted.
MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES:
Different people in the production will be in charge of different resources. These resources include a camera, lights, sound etc.
LIAISON WITH CLIENTS:
A liaison is used when a production is making something for a client. It helps them to understand exactly what the client wants and makes it clear and easy for the production team to do this.
CLIENT NEGOTIATION:
If you are unable to meet the clients needs and create what they want then you would have to negotiate with the client in order to think of a way around this and still meet the needs of the client.
TEAM WORKING:
Team work is one of the most important elements to think about on a film set. If your team has good team work it should be a lot easier to get the job done efficiently and to a great standard. This is done by having everyone in the team doing a different job role and planning well to make sure they get their assigned job finished in time.
PRESENTATION:
You must have good presentation skills in order to impress your client enough to be interested in hiring you for the job. This is done by making your presentations seem extremely professional and showing you have good knowledge on the client and on making an ident.
CREATIVE COMMUNICATION
ENHANCING IDEAS AND PUSHING TECHNOLOGY:
The technology that we use has become more and more developed expecially in recent years. The range of technology has become much wider; this larger range of software and hardware means that we have less limitations and can go further with creating new orginial pieces of work. This also means that it is expected of productions to create more impressive pieces and use technology to do this. For example the E4 ident uses lots of special effects such as CGI and animation which means that other companies need to try and match up to this.
COMMUNICATING VISUAL IDEAS TO A NON-VISUAL AUDIENCE:
Creators need to think about many different things when creating an ident, such as if their audience is visually impaired. They would have to think about how they can use sound to create the same effect as the visual effect which the ident gives. They can do this by using things such as voiceovers to give them the information about shows and times, and also music and sounds to give the listener a sense of what is happening visually. For example if an ident is showing a beach, the creators could use sounds such as waves and seagulls.
CREATING UNDER PRESSURE OF TIME AND BUDGET:
Deadlines can put creators under extreme pressure, they can be extremely strict and hard to stick to. This is why they should plan the ident thoroughly in pre-production to ensure that they have a good plan to stick to and make sure it is created in time. If the ident is not created in time it may not be aired at all and a large amount of money could be completely wasted. This means that a team must work extremely effeciently to create the ident to a good standard and make sure that it is done on time.
APPEALING TO TARGET AUDIENCE AND APPRECIATION OF DESIRED TONE:
Target audience is a very important element to think about whilst producing an ident. This is because it is dependant on what channel you are making the ident for. For example the TV channel ‘DAVE’ has a target audience of men who are interested in shows such as car programmes. This is shown by their ident which has two men and one woman get into racing cars and drive off. Channels should have brand loyalty to keep their target audience by keeping the same genres of programmes and show this in their idents. This is why rebranding can often put viewers off of a channel they originally liked.
PURPOSES OF IDENTS
IDENTITY
Idents are used for giving a TV channel an identity which helps it to stand out from other channels and be unique, it also helps the viewers to understand what the channel is about and shows them what they should expect from the channel. It does this with sound, colours and visuals.
MARKETING AND BRANDING
Idents are used before/after a programme to help the viewers recognize and associate the channel with the programme, it helps to make the channel more memorable so if the viewer enjoyed the show then they could easily remember the channel which it was being played on and go back to it.
PACKAGING & REPACKAGING
Because of an idents job is to show a channels identity it must be kept up to date depending on the channel at the time. An example is if the channel had started to air different types or genres of programmes then the ident would have to be up to date to show this. Also, it has to be up to date with the type of year, for example including summery things such as beach balls in summer and snow at Christmas.
SCHEDULING AND SEGMENTING
Lastly, idents are used to help the schedule of the programmes by telling the viewers when they will be airing. They use voiceovers to do this which often also talk a little bit about the show, this can help to take up time in-between programmes.
INTRODUCTION TO PRE-PRODUCTION
Pre-production in the media industry is extremely important as it is the preparation for production before it begins. Pre-production can be used for many different types of production including film, television, radio, and live performances such as plays and gigs. I will be explaining pre-production used in filmmaking.
For smaller productions this can include meeting a the client, research, storyboarding, location planning, etc. However for feature films pre-production can be a lot more specific and only start after staffing, casting and screenplay has been complete. For feature films pre-production includes: location scouting, prop and wardrobe identification and preparation, Special effects identification and preparation, production schedule, set construction, script-locking, and script read-through with cast, director and other interested parties.
RESOURCES
Money: Finance in film production is extremely important of the smooth running of the production. This is because you need the money for the resources such as facilities, locations, personnel (salaries), props and filming/editing equipment. Distributers of these resources can be fairly competitive so it is helpful to look into different distributers and compare prices, this could help you out hugely in the long run of your production finance. It is crucial that you plan your finance in pre-production to ensure that the production stays on track. It is also important to plan this in advance so that you can ensure that a profit will be made from the movie and to get an idea of what sort of profit. There are various ways to source your finance, such as using your own money, sponsors, bank loans, donations and fund raising.
TIME: Time planning in pre production is also very important to make sure the filmmaking stays on track. Things that must be kept in mind whilst planing your time are deadlines, scheduling and milestones. Setting deadlines can be good for helping the production team to work at a good pace and to make sure things get done by a certain date so that it can meet the final deadline. If the team do not meet these deadlines it could lead to the loss of money and even possibly the loss of a job. Scheduling is important for making sure that jobs in the production are divided equally and organised using time, place and organising who is working on them. This is important to plan to stop confusion and loss of time.
PERSONNEL: When it comes to personnel you have to look at several different things such as assigning job roles to specific people by looking at who will get the jobs done to the best standard and also the size of your team. The size of your team is important because you need to know how many people you will need to get the job done in the allotted time and also how much you have to pay the amount of workers.
FACILITIES: You must take into account a few different things when plannnig the facilities which you will need for production. These include equipment, as you will have to make sure you have all of the equipment that will help you to make your film, this includes things such as camera equipment, sound equipment, lighting, props etc. You will also need to plan the space you have to keep all of your equipment to ensure that you do not waste money on this.
LOCATIONS: Location is imporant to plan as there are lots of things which you must consider such as accessibility (for the personnel such as film crew and actors to get to the location), cost, area, and distance. The location of shooting is important as it could change the whole look of the film and make it seem more realistic than just using a green screen if the location is an important part of the screenplay.
HEALTH AND SAFETY: This is something that any production team will need to think about before shooting. This is because of the number of various hazards there are such as tripping hazards, lifting hazards, camera risks, water hazards and precarious hazards (when shooting from near the edge of something or high up). To avoid these risks, you will need to do a risk assessment to identify all of the hazards, evaluate the risks, and identify the measures to conntrol the risks.

TEST SHOTS
These are the test shots I took before I started taking the final pictures for my graphic narrative. The first two show the test pictures for the flower burning. Although you cant really see the flame I could edit this in afterwards and it still shows the flower decompose which will give a good effect. The third picture is a test shot for the scene where the clone escapes. I wanted to see if it would be a good enough location to take pictures of the clone escaping to. It is good as there is lots of space and green colour, which is very different to the room which she was imprisoned in. The last picture is a test shot of the patterns on the clone transferring onto the human.
EVALUATION
I do not believe that my graphic narrative film did meet the briefs expectations for several reasons. For example It was too short and didn’t take up 10 minutes, I think that this is due to limited filming time as it was hard to get actors to the location of shooting so there was less time than I needed.
Also, if I had more time I would have used Photoshop to edit in effects such as real fire at the end when the flowers are still burning instead of just showing them decompose. I also would have used it to add filters/change the colour levels on some of the images to add more of a sci-fi/realistic look. Additionally I could have put a black and white filter over the pictures at the beginning and change them gradually to colour as the robot develops.
Furthermore I could have used more sound effects to my film to give scenes more impact, for example footsteps and a door creaking. Although I wanted to add these effects I could not find the sounds that I liked, I could have recorded my own sounds if I had the extra time to do this. I also could have made the music more interesting by using different scores and editing them so that they built up to a climax at the more intense moments.
i also think that if I had more time I would take more photographs to fill the spaces to make the story clearer. For example the ending may not be clear when the clone has escaped because I only used one photo of an open door to show her escape so I could take photographs of her leaving the room. I also could have added text to narrate the story or narrate over with my voice in order to give the audience a better idea of what is happening.
Written Treatment
The human is writing her plan down on a piece of paper, each word has a photograph taken to show the writing develop. The shot will be a close up from above, the lighting will be dim with one brighter light focused on the writing. The human is then drawing the plans of the robot, there will also be many shots to show the drawing develop, this will be a mid shot from above. There will then be a close up of the drawing as it is almost finished. One picture will be a drawing of a girl who is half human and half mechanical robot. More drawings will show the plans of the limbs with writing around them. There will then be a headshot of the human from in front of her. It will show her looking down, several shots will be taken moving to a mid shot showing her drawing. The next shot will be a blank screen, there will be sounds of tools and machinery to show the passing of time as the robot is being made. There will then be a nature shot for three seconds with the sound of birds singing. it will show the clones eye closed. Shots of different locations will then flash up, for example a road, the sea, an airport, and a city. It will then show the eye open for five seconds, this will be an extreme close up. Next will be a shot of the room in front of the clone from her perspective, several shots will pan around the room to show her looking around. Then will be a close up of the clone’s hands, and then showing her face looking down at them confused. More shots will show her looking around the room, in the mirror, touching her face, trying to open the locked door. She then looks down at her hands again and sees that there are patterns developing on her hands and up her arms. I will take lots of close up pictures as I paint the patterns on to her arm to show them develop. Once the patterns have finished she goes to sleep on the sofa. The lights suddenly turn on brightly and the human enters. I will use several mid shots to show this. She then examines the clone by looking at the patterns on her arms, I will use close ups for this. The human then puts their wrists together and the patterns start to transfer onto the humans hands and arms. I will paint this on so that the patterns are similar but instead use red colours instead of blue, this is to show danger, and blood as she is human instead of robot. The patterns that have transferred means that the clones powers and strength have transferred however the human uses it for destruction, this will be shown with close up shots of the human touching a plant and it setting on fire.
Research 2
Once I’d completed my idea generations by making mind maps and using word association I had come up with the main ideas being clones and robots. I started to research this by watching films/reading stories which were about this.
One way I researched the topic was by watching music videos. Mercy by Muse is about a compound in which men have designed a female robot clone which carries out different tasks which they make them do. One clone then bumps into another and then discovers a whole room of other clones. At the end of the video she sacrifices herself to wake the other clones.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj8Xpdx60Ws
i also watched films about clones to take inspiration from. For example I watched Moon which is a film about a man working for a company on the moon. he thinks that he is there for 4 years before he gets to go back to his wife and child. He finds himself in a accident and is rescued by his new clone. He then comes to the realisation that he is also a clone and dying. I like the idea of clones having a short life span as it is said that cloned sheep live shorter lives so this could be more realistic. i also like how the film is set in the future and think that I will put this into my own short film.
Another film that i watched was the Island. This is about a secret compound where clones of rich people are living thinking that they have been saved from a worldwide disease, and that every lottery winner gets to go live on ‘the island’. A curious clone then discovers that these lottery winners are actually going to get killed, and have their organs taken from to give to the real person. He then goes to find his clone to tell him the body parts are being taken from living humans, only to find out that he refuses to help as he would do anything to live. I like the idea of people having clones in order to take things from, so that they can live longer. I also like the idea of a rebellion of the clones against the humans.
