Vorkuta is a coal-mining town, situated in the northeast of European Russia, just north of the Arctic Circle. With it's satellite towns, Vorkuta forms the so-called Vorkuta Ring or Vorkuta Circle, which included such towns as Severny, Tsementnozavodsky, Yur-Shor, Promyshlenny, Vorgashor, Komsomolsky, Mulda, Zapolyarny, Oktyabrsky, Sovetsky and others. Their population was employed in coal mines and other industrial and military facilities. After collapse of the Soviet Union, many mines were closed due to accidents and high operating costs and people began to move to other regions. The towns of Vorkuta Ring became partially or completely abandoned, some were demolished.

In Vorkuta, the wind howls like a famished wolf, and the ice seems to guard secrets that time itself dares not touch. The ruins of the mines whisper stories of forgotten men, whose ghosts still wander beneath the gray veil of the Arctic sky. The sun, pale and distant, barely dares to look upon that desert of iron and silence — where even hope freezes, and solitude drags itself like a wandering specter. As ruínas das minas sussurram histórias de homens esquecidos, cujos fantasmas ainda vagam sob o véu cinzento do céu ártico. O sol, pálido e distante, mal se atreve a olhar aquele deserto de ferro e silêncio — onde até a esperança se congela, e a solidão se arrasta como um espectro errante.
