He always danced like no one was watching and tonight was no exception. Not to say that he was bad, just that he was clueless. Ray was just having a good time at the club, only aware of others when he stepped to stay out of their way. That is until he spun around and nearly crashed into someone. “Oh, I’m sorry. Sometimes you just get in that zone, y’know,” he chuckled, looking over and then felt his heart skip a beat when he saw Eva. “Oh, I... hey there, miss Evangeline. You sure do look radiant tonight.”

“You have a set of lungs on you though. I’ve heard it myself.” She was a little embarrassed by how she heard him sing before, but that was another story for another time. Eva was more focused on the fact that he agreed to do it. “It’s just going to be the standard carols. I have a list for you though. But I do want to warn you that it is….later today? Is that okay? You can say no if it isn’t I just….really need someone there.”

“Really?” he felt himself flush a bit. When had she heard him sing? The compliment made his heart sing, though. “Well... thank you, that really means somethin’ comin’ from someone like you.” He nodded. Honestly, she could’ve said it would spontaneously start in five seconds and he would’ve agreed. “Course it’s okay. I’m more than happy to accompany you. I honestly can’t think of a better way to spend my evenin’.”

“Hey Ray,” Evangeline “called out” to the guy, only knowing a little bit that her voice hardly raised too much. “I have a completely random favor to ask of you? I know Christmas is over and done but I was asked to sing carols at this old folks home….And I would love to have someone singing with me.” She gave him a hopeful look. “And I was hoping that could be you.”

He could’ve heard her voice from a million miles away. Ray turned quickly and found himself smiling before he even reached her. “Well, hello to you, miss Evangeline,” he said, suddenly feeling a little more fidgety than normal. “Oh, of course, I’m happy to help you with anythin’ you’ve got.” He just smiled some more, cheeks heating a bit at the prospect. “Oh, I’d love to sing with you. Not sure my voice could hold a candle to yours, but yes, I definitely would like to do that with you.” He was still grinning, trying to stand casually, but since he felt very aware of his arms and legs it was proving to be a challenge. “What, um... do you have some sort of setlist or anythin’? Just so I can prepare myself some?”

“See, if you really wanted a good helper, you shoulda asked my friend Tiana, she’s an amazing cook,” Ray said, doing his job of chopping vegetables. “I mean, I’m good enough at following your directions, so as long as ya keep me pointed in the right direction, I won’t set any of your stuff on fire.” He was joking, but at the same time, it felt like a healthy warning that he truly didn’t know exactly what they were doing. “So what’re we cookin’ anyways?”

“Ray!” Naveen said with just as much excitement in his voice. “What an excellent idea. Guys night is a great idea. Work does keep me rather busy. That never stops Lottie from barging in though,” he said with a light laugh. “Things are going well. I cannot complain. How are you, my friend?”

His smile beamed. “Man, I should take a page from her book and just stop by, but things’ve been busy. Who knew tourists never take a day off.” Ray laughed a bit. “Hey, that’s good. Always good when there’s nothin’ to complain about. I’ve been doin’ just fine. Nothing too big goin’ on. Just work mostly.” He took a brief pause. “Y’know if I’m bein’ honest, I’m glad it ain’t light as late anymore. The long summer days kept me busy for too long. Made me miss my time with my friends like you. And I missed goin’ to see Miss Evangeline preform some nights. Which I mean, I know is okay and I don’t have to go to every single one. But I like her singing.” He shifted on the balls of his feet. He could talk for hours on end, but when it came to talking about himself and his own thoughts and feelings, he felt like he was rambling for too long. “But, anyways, you busy tonight? I was thinkin’ we could get some food or some drinks or somethin’? If you were up for it.”

“Naveen!” Ray said excitedly, hurrying over to his friend. “Hey man. So I was thinkin’, we need to start going out together more often. Just do a sorta guys night. I feel like we don’t get to hang out as much anymore ‘cus of work and such. So, how you been? Things goin’ alright?”

Matt is shaking in his shoes at the depiction of the elaborate decorations that would scare him even more. If it’s one thing he doesn’t like is letting his guard down and have the unpredictable get to him. After calming down from his scare, he manages to go back to normal. “And um, where is back home?” Matt asked the guy curiously. 

“Man, I didn’t mean to frighten you none, sorry ‘bout that,” Ray said as he watched his demeanor change a bit. “Oh, back in Louisiana. We lived off in the Bayou, but on special occasions like holidays or birthdays, we’d head into the city. It was great. What about you? You from somewhere before here?”

Evangeline surprisingly hasn’t seen Ray in a bit. Normally she would catch the fire cracker once or twice a night. He seemed to really love her set and she really loved having him around. But lately things have been off. Maybe it was her. It was hard to say. All she knew as she wasn’t going to let him slip away tonight. The moment she was off work, she spotted the familiar face and went over to him. “Ray,” she said, her voice slightly raspy from her performance earlier. “How are you doing? I haven’t seen that smile of yours in a bit.”

Ray’s face lit up with the brightest smile when she approached him. “Hey there, miss Evangeline,” he said happily. “I’m doin’ just fine, how’ve you been doin’? And I know, I’ve been tryin’ to get down here more, but day’s’ve been busy what with all the people comin’ into town at the end of summer. But we’re startin’ to hit that lull between seasons so I should be frequentin’ here more often.” He loved talking to Evangeline, loved seeing her smile. “You sounded absolutely beautiful tonight. I swear, I always think ‘nope, there’s no way she can top that last performance’ but you always do.”

“That…wasn’t scary at all.” Matthew huffs out a short laugh, hiding the fact he got freaked out a little from the Halloween toy that turned on automatically when he passed by it.

“Oh, man, if you want really scary you should see what some of the haunted places did back home. Man, they’d go all out and those decorations were enough to get you jumpin’. Plus there was always the fact that you didn’t always know what was a planned part of the decorations on account of the ghosts and the spirits and stuff. Man, it was so much fun.”

Jered stopped, blinking up at the man and nodding when he’d had a moment to work out what he was saying. “Oh, of course, my friend,” he agreed, pulling out his phone. He’d been listening to music for a long while for the morning, thinking mostly about how badly he needed to change it up or make a new playlist entirely, at least of go-tos. “There we are. It’s 9:14, hopefully not running too close to being late?” He smiled, then frowned at the offered coffee; he didn’t like to think of himself as a snob, but dear god, he had some standards. “How about after you finish whatever it is you’re doing, you allow me to make you a decent cup of coffee, hm? On the house.”

“Man, Alright. Just missed my bus, but it ain’t no trouble. I’ll just catch the next one.” Ray didn’t like being late, but he’d get there eventually. And he was pretty sure if he explained the situation, no one would be too upset. “I mean, I usually think this’s alright, but I mean if you’ve got some special way of makin’ coffee, I’ll try it. Is that your job or somethin’, makin’ coffee, or are you just a fan of the stuff?”

“Well now, Sug’ that’s a nightly lovely offer but I like just a dash of coffee with my creamer and not a lot have it my special way.” She stated as she patted his shoulder. “So you enjoy that coffee but as for the time ! It’s just a quarter after two.”

“Alright, well, I’ll remember that and next time I see ya, I’ll get you somethin’ like that. Thanks for the time.” He looked her over again. “Hey, ain’t you friends with Naveen and miss Tiana? Or am I mixin’ up faces again.”

Valerie thought about his offer. The free coffee was tempting, but he seemed like the type that would give it to someone for free anyways. “Buy me a hot chocolate, and you got yourself a deal. I’m in the mood for something sweet.”

Ray laughed a bit. “Yeah, alright. Got a bit of a sweet tooth? I like that,” he said with a smile. “You ever have any of that spicy hot chocolate? I mean, I love a good cup of regular ol’ cocoa believe me, but man sometimes that extra kick is just right.”

“It’s uh about eight,” Dewey responded pulling out his phone to check the time.  “You don’t have to give me your coffee, I hardly did anything for you.  Definitely not anything worth a coffee.”

“Okay, thank you, man. And ya never know, there’re some people out there that ain’t gonna even give you a smile if you don’t bend over backward for ‘em. Not that I thought you’d be one of that type, just think it’s better to be nice than anythin’ else.” He gave the younger man a smile.

“Oh sure!” Daisy said, flashing a wide smile as she pulled her phone out of her purse and looked at the time. “It’s 11:15.” She said, looking to the person who had asked. “I hope that doesn’t make you too late.” Daisy commented. She looked to the coffee before looking to the other person. “That’s really not necessary. I already had coffee. Two cups will make me jittery.”

“Alright, thank you,” He said with a smile. “I shouldn’t be too late, it’ll be alright. And yeah, okay, I get that, I get that. If I ever have more than one cup I’m just bouncin’ off the walls and I’ll never shut up. And y’know people already say I could talk their ear off without even tryin’.”
