Autumns near another changing time of the year, Mabon the Autumn equinox, as we pile up all the wonderful gifts from our garden, we realize how rich we actually are and we share this time with our loved ones. A day to celebrate the second harvest and the balance between dark and light. The 21st of September, a very special day to me, for its my son, Akasha´s, birthday „smile“-Emoticon we are looking forward to celebrate and make a nice food altar!

THE BENEFITS OF THE USE OF PLANTAIN IN HERBAL PREPARATIONS

Not to be confused with the banana-like fruit of the same name, the Plantago major is a green, weedy plant native to North America, Europe and Asia. Cultures around the world have used the plantain leaf (Plantago major) to help relieve health ailments for millennia. The plant is one of nine sacred herbs mentioned in the ancient Lacnunga (‘Remedies’), a collection of Anglo-Saxon medical texts. During the 1500s and 1600s, it was used by Europeans for everything from dog bites and boils to fevers and the flu . The major components of plantain are iridoid glycosides (particularly aucubin), mucilage,and tannins. Together, they are believed to reduce irritation, quell harmful organisms, and exhibit expectorant actions. Plantain is an Alterative meaning that it is one of about 100 plants that clean and correct impure conditions of the blood and the eliminative tissues and organs. Plantain roots are powdered to use on toothaches. No powder? Just dig and chew a root for relief. Plantain is an anthelminitic or vermicide and taken as a tea it will kill worms internally in the stomach and the intestines. Plantain is an antiseptic used to clean cuts and wounds. It heals boils and other sores.This herb is used as a vulnerary to heal wounds, cuts and scratches. Because it is found in high traffic areas around playgrounds, baseball fields and parks it is easy to grab, crush and use. Since it contains epidermal growth factor, it can be used in place of comfrey to repair damaged tissue, treat bruises and broken bones.

Air

The element of Air is vital to human survival, without it we would all perish, its aspects are Thinness, Motion and Darkness and its quality is Active. Air is the manifestation of movement, freshness, communication and of the intelligence. Sound is another manifestation of this element. As an element, it is invisible, but its reality can be felt in the air that we breathe in every day.

To connect with the power of this element, find a place with clean air and breathe deeply, touch a feather or inhale the fragrance of a heavily scented flower. Let yourself experience the energy of this element, and reflect that we also possess Air energy within ourselves.

In magical terms, Air is the power of the mind, the force of intellect, inspiration, imagination. It is ideas, knowledge, dreams and wishes. Air is the element of new life and new possibilities and is essential to spells and rituals of travel, instruction, finding lost items, some types of divination, and freedom. Air aids us in visualization, a vital technique in magic.

Fern, Bracken - Secret bond of love, Fascination, Sincerity, Magic. In England it is believed that hanging dried ferns in the house will protect all the inhabitants from thunder and lightning damage. It is believed that it may rain when the ferns are cut or burnt. The bracken seed of the plant is said to provide magical qualities if you place a few in the pocket - invisibility being the most notable. It is also believed that treading on a fern will cause the traveller to become confused and lose his way. If a traveller treads on a fern he or she will become confused and lose their way.

Im Mittelalter pflanzte man Farn in die Kräutergärten, um böse Geister und Dämonen fern zu halten. Er sollte auch vor Blitz und Hagelschlag bewahren, und wer Farn bei sich trug, war gegen böse Anschläge auf Leib und Leben gefeit. Man hängte Farnkrautbüschel auch als Glücksbringer über die Türen.

Farne sind Sporenpflanzen, deswegen fehlen ihnen Blüte und Früchte, was unsere Vorfahren zu wilden Spekulationen beflügelte: Er solle, so hieß es, in der Johannisnacht genau um Mitternacht eine goldene Blüte hervor bringen, und dann auch sogleich den Samen abwerfen. Dass dieser dann besondere Kräfte haben sollte, versteht sich von selbst: Er machte den Träger stich- und kugelfest und außerdem unsichtbar, half angeblich, verborgene Schätze zu entdecken und war auch für allerhand Liebeszauber begehrt. Außerdem konnte man mit seiner Hilfe die Sprache der Tiere verstehen. Allerdings ließen sich die Samen natürlich nur gewinnen, wenn man bestimmte, magische Praktiken anzuwenden wusste.

In England sagt man, dass sich im Schatten des Farnkrauts oft Feen und Pixies verstecken. Man solle deswegen nicht einfach so durch Farne hindurch latschen und dürfe in der Nähe von Farnen auf gar keinen Fall über Geheimnisse reden, weil die Feen sie sonst überall verbreiten würden.

In der Heilkunde benutzte man ihn früher als Wurmmittel sowie in Umschlägen gegen Gicht und Rheuma. Als Signaturpflanze für den Rücken wurde er auch gegen Rückenschmerzen verordnet.

Für den Garten kann man inzwischen Farne aus aller Welt in den Gärtnereien kaufen, passend für alle möglichen Standorte. Besonders beliebt sind natürlich die winter- und immergrünen Sorten. Farne gehören zu den langlebigsten, nicht verholzenden Gartenpflanzen. An geeignetem Standort können sie sehr alt werden und bringen Romantik und etwas Geheimnisvolles in den Garten.
