Ok, so I have to say something about this guy.
Unless you are a medical doctor, your fucking opinion doesn’t matter on this subject. Like at all.
This is something that angers me regularly. As she says, it’s incredibly invalidating and a bit reason many people don’t seek help when they desperately need it. More and more medical science has actually started to find a ton of physical evidence of mental disorders in the brain. When MRIs and catscans are performed, they are finding entirely different brain chemistry and activity in brains with depression, ADHD, Bipolar, etc vs “Normal” Brains.
Our mood and behavior, are emotions are mostly derived from our brain chemistry and hormones. It is quite ignorant to assume the brain itself can’t get sick like any other organ in the body.
Personal example. When I finally went to go get help for my depression, before I could even get prescribed on any medication, the doctors had me go and do a full physical, which included blood tests. Why?? Because depression can actually be a symptom of many diseases.
It can be a sign of certain heart disorders, poor nutrition (as in your body may not be absorbing certain nutrients right, not just in poor diet. OR it may not be filtering out certain nutrients enough and could be a build up of certain heavy metals, etc) Kidney issues, hormone imbalance, thyroid/pituitary issues, even CANCERS, infections and many more things. They wanted to rule all of these things out (some of which are potentially life threatening) before treating the brain itself for imbalance. Imagine telling someone they should just work through their depression, only for them to find out they have cancer and potentially could have caught it early?? OR on the other side of the spectrum, simply had a hormone or nutritional issue that could have been taken care of with dietary changes or supplements? Having suffered for a long time to only figure out it as simple as a quick round of medications or simply changing your diet.
Once they rule these out, then they go to treat for chemical imbalances in the brain. At the moment they sadly can’t figure out exactly what the issue is with simply testing, and thus you have to experiment with meds. Why do you think there are so many types of anti depressants? Not just brands, but entire categories that work entirely differently? It’s why certain drugs work or don’t work for certain people.
But seriously, if you aren’t a medical doctor, seriously shut the fuck up about medical opinions on mental health. You could potentially be putting peoples lives at risk.
