Just Say You’re Racist And Go

I’m a big SamBucky shipper and I do anti-racism work in the fandom usually. Whether that’s in AO3 comments, on Discord, or sending a private message on Tumblr. It’s important to me to say something when I see something. I’m never rude, even though racism is a form of violence and I’m not required to give anyone my politeness. I usually say something because I either think it’s so harmful (reinforcing racist tropes/beliefs) that it needs to be rewritten or taken down, or I like the story and writing and I feel the author can do better. Intentional or not, the impact is the same. But it’s endlessly frustrating dealing with white innocence that leans heavily on ignorance. I read something that was truly upsetting because it’s obvious this person never really internalized anything that was said to them.

Being called out for racism in regards to something you wrote, specific to the passages of the story that were problematic, having the history and nuance of whys explained to you, is not a form of harassment. If you wanna continue to be racist af, just say that, instead of derailing the conversation and trying disguise the issue as something else.

Just say you don’t care how Black people feel or what they think or if you’re writing harmfully reinforces dangerous opinions and thinking about groups of people that are nonsense.

Being told your elements of your story is racist, ableist, harmful or whatever IS NOT HARASSMENT. It’s criticism. No one should have to continuously block bigotry and it just feeds into the problem of there being a lack of visibility for BI-POC who have various intersectional minority groups we fall into.

Whether you’re bitch or kitten in the fandom, stuck dreaming, running with dinosaurs, are buttered bullshit, a secret letter, can’t spell for shit, half a whole bitch, or not any of the aforementioned, but you know me and we’ve spoken, get your shit together.

You don’t wanna know better so you can do better and you don’t give a shit about being a bigot. Fake ass allies. Performative ass bitches. More concerned about being called a bigot rather than being one. Fuck you all. Feel free to @ me.

I think this is something every white person (including me) needs to read and keep in mind. If you’re not a part of the solution, if you’re not working on your own shit, you are a part of the problem. And attacking someone who is trying to help (especially since it is not on anyone else to help you become a better person) is reprehensible. And no, I don’t think you have the right to be offended if anyone explaining to you why what you said/wrote/did is racist is curt, frustrated, or downright cussing you out. At this point in time there are so many resources for us to learn from. People do make mistakes but if you are choosing ignorance and hatred and trying to hide it behind some bull excuse, that is not okay. Obviously anything I say is filtered through my experience and I am in no way claiming to be an expert on what anyone else has gone through. I just think that us white folk need to get our heads out of our asses and stop relying on the people we hurt with our ignorance to teach us to do better. We need to put in the work. And when we do something wrong, we need to be willing and able to examine where those beliefs are coming from and work to be a less terrible person.
