author note: iβm loving this concept, im still working on my writing, you also donβt have to read the other part to understand the storyline (i donβt think)
by the time the barcelona grand prix arrived, yn had officially decided that she was never going to step foot inside another paddock again.
not after the embarrassing moment in monaco.
her spilling coffee over max verstappen has apparently become a running joke within the red bull racing garage. lauren, her best friend had called her multiple times in hopes to convince yn to come to spain.
facetime: 9:42PM
βyouβll be fineβ lauren insisted while getting ready in her hotel room in barcelona but yn could hear isacks snickering in the background of the facetime call making her let out a small huff.
βthatβs easy for you to say lauren, you didnβt trip and spill coffee over max verstappenβ she muttered, while curled beneath a thick pink blanket on her couch back at home βiβm probably banned from ever stepping foot in another garage again.β
βyou are not bannedβ lauren insists with a small laugh at how dramatic the girl was being.
βyou didnβt see his face, he looked at me like he wanted to personally escort me out of the country to make sure i didnβt spill coffee on anyone elseβ yn complains again, sounding absolutely mortified.
βthatβs just his face!β isack chimes in from wherever heβs listening from in his and laurenβs hotel room.
βhe definitely hates me and never (bold) wants to see my face anywhere near the paddock againβ yn says with a pout which makes both lauren and isack laugh loudly which honestly felt offensive to poor yn.
the call ended ten minutes later with lauren once again begging the girl to come.
she didnβt.
instead, the next day, she stayed back in the comfort of her apartment in oversized pastel pajamas and snacks spread across the coffee table with qualifying playing quietly on her television.
yn barely understood what was happening. the cars blurred together and the commentators spoke so quickly she couldnβt keep up, but every now and again the camera would cut to maxβs car where he sits in the cockpit focused and completely locked in.
the girl found it annoyingly attractive which was a huge inconvenience for her considering she barely even knew the guy.
although they had only spent maybe twenty minutes together in total. most of that involving her awkwardly apologising and him insulting her choice of footwear, she found herself paying more attention whenever the camera would cut to his car.
by the final minute of qualifying, even yn could tell that it was stressful, then somehow despite the stress, max still managed to make it to pole.
she rolled her eyes slightly, of course he had made pole.
an hour later, yn was halfway through removing her makeup when her phone buzzed on the bathroom counter, the screen lighting up and the βpingβ of a notification breaking through the otherwise silent bathroom.
she wipes her hands dry before picking up the phone.
lauren:
HE ASKED ISACK WHERE YOU WERE.
that one message made ynβs stomach do a small flip.
she stared at the message for a concerning amount of time, trying to work out if lauren was messing with her or not, before yn could even start typing, another notification appeared on top of her screen.
an unknown number.
unknown:
you missed me making pole
ynβs fingers hovered over the screen for a moment.
yn:
whoβs this?
the message was marked as read and a typing bubble appeared almost immediately.
unknown:
the person you assaulted in monaco
she let out an audible laugh at that before she could even stop herself. that was definitely max.
another typing bubble then appeared under the message.
max:
why werenβt you here?
yn shifts, abandoning her skincare routine for a moment and walking out of the ensuite to sit on the edge of her bed, staring at the message for a moment longer than necessary.
yn:
i didnβt want to embarrass myself again
max:
i think itβs to late for that
she blinks slowly at the message, her jaw dropping slightly at the bluntness. that was rude.
yn:
you text everyone after races or am i just special?
this time the reply from max took longer.
max:
you talk to much
a small smile appears on the girls face but she replies quickly.
yn:
yet you still messaged me first
no response came for almost two minutes leaving yn awkwardly staring at the chat. when she beginning to think that he was ignoring her another message pops up.
max:
youβre annoying in person
thought iβd see if you were annoying over text aswell
she grinned down at her phone like a school girl texting her crush for the first time.
yn:
and?
another long pause hit her.
max:
still deciding
that made her cheeks warm embarrassingly quick.
somewhere across barcelona, max verstappen four time world champion, the emotionally unavailable formula one driver had made pole, gone through interviews and celebrated with his team and still thought of messaging the girl who threw coffee on him afterwards.
yn expected the messages to stop and max to disappear after barcelona. a few sarcastic messages after the race made a lot of sense to her. he was probably bored after media duties.
but then monday came and her phone buzzed once again while she was relaxing with lauren at her apartment.
max:
isack said you told lauren that qualifying was the fast bit before the actual race.
the girl immediately smiled once she saw the message despite trying to hold it back.
yn:
thatβs what it is!
max:
no it isnβt
yn:
then explain it properly
she didnβt get a response from that, yn assumed he was once again just teasing her but five minutes later her phone buzzes next to her again.
max:
iβm not explaining formula one over text
then a photo appeared. it was blurry, very obviously taken quickly but she could make out the laptop screen filled with graphs and numbers, below was a message.
max:
qualifying strategy, happy now?
she stared at the image for a second before laughing to herself which made lauren perk up next to her.
yn:
not really, thereβs to many numbers
max:
that sounds like a you problem
she rolled her eyes at that, setting her phone back down on the arm of the couch while trying very hard to push back a smile. lauren unfortunately noticed immediately.
βyouβre texting him arenβt you?β lauren teases making an effort to wiggle her eyebrows.
yn looked up towards lauren, her cheeks flushing an embarrassing red at being caught βno!β she says quickly but lauren could see right through the girls lie. she reaches across to grab ynβs phone before she could stop her βoh my god! you are!β lauren gasps dramatically.
lauren grinned while scrolling through the messages βthis is insane. max verstappen is flirting with you through race strategy!β
that made the girls face heat up even more βheβs not flirting!β yn exclaims her voice going a pitch to high at the thought. lauren then points to the image max sent βhe sent you race strategy photos!β yn huffs trying to reach out for her phone βheβs probably just bored!β
over the next week, the messages became very strangely normal. At first it was random comments about races, then photos of what they were doing, then max complaining about media. The two started texting everyday around maxβs busy schedule, it was mostly complete nonsense.

she also discovered that max was funnier than she expected. dry and constantly judging her but funny which made everything worse because she started looking for his messages on her phone without even realising it.
it was a few days before the austrian grand prix, she was laying in bed rewatching her favourite romcom when her phone pinged beside her.
max:
are you coming to austria?
that made her heart do a tiny flip, he wanted her there?
yn:
lauren asked me to
max:
and?
yn:
iβm still traumatised from monaco actually and still fully convinced iβm banned from all paddocks.
the typing bubble appeared immediately after she sent the message.
max:
come to austria, maybe i want to see you without having coffee launched at my back.
her cheeks warmed immediately turning that light shade of pink she started to despise.
yn:
iβll think about it
the message is left on read but she finds herself staring at his previous text for a while longer, her heart beating slightly to fast for a man she barely knew which she found absolutely ridiculous. yet somehow, for the first time since the embarrassing incident in monaco, she thought the idea of walking into the paddock again didnβt sound absolutely horrible anymore, not when max wanted her to come.

monaco was exactly how she imagined it would be. expensive and luxurious.
everything twinkled beneath the morning sun the ocean reflecting against white yachts, polished sports cars rolled through the streets and people dressed like they stepped straight out of a magazine.
she adjusted the oversized sunglasses sitting on her nose and followed lauren through the crowded paddock entrance, the heel of her shoes clicking against the concrete.
βi still donβt understand why everyoneβs dressed like theyβre going to warβ she mutters while glancing around at the team uniforms and headsets that seem endless with the amount of staff.
lauren laughs beside her βbecause itβs formula one.β
βit seems stressfulβ yn huffs out, glossy lips popping together clearly uninterested βit is stressfulβ lauren remarks.
yn frowns slightly, clutching her iced latte closer to her chest βthen why do men do this willingly?β lauren only grinned at ynβs dramatics, already use to her comments after years of friendship between the two girls βyou can survive one weekend.β
to say yn was out of place was an understatement, her soft pink outfit, glossy lips and perfectly styled hair sticking out into the chaos of the paddock.
lauren had begged her to come, with isack now driving for red bull for the 2026 season, lauren spent most race weekends alone while isack disappeared into meetings, briefings, and media sessions. lauren wanted the company.
yn said yes because what sounds better than spending the weekend in monaco.
"wait here for a second" lauren said suddenly over the noise of the busy paddock, stepping outside of the red bull hospitality suite "i need to find isack before qualifying starts."
yn nods easily "okay."
lauren turns back to yn for a second "you sure?" she asks, making yn roll her eyes "yes, lauren. i can stand still for two minutes."
lauren points playfully towards the girl wiggling her finger "do not wander." she warns
five seconds later, she wandered. it wasn't intentional at first. she had only meant to look around for a moment to get some pictures for her instagram, curiosity pulled her further down the paddock lane. cameras flashed everywhere, mechanics and other team personnel rushed between locations, journalists shoved microphones into drivers faces. it was pure chaos. how did people enjoy this?
while distracted by the gorgeous monaco views, she failed to notice the thick black cable stretched across the ground until the heel of her shoe caught against it. the stumble happened fast. one second she was upright, the next her iced latte flew from her hand completely and directly onto someone dressed in a navy red bull race suit.
the area around her went silent for a moment, team members froze and so slowly the man turned around. Max Verstappen stared down at the coffee now dripping onto the puddle from the back of his suit before lifting his eyes towards her.
blue eyes, sharp jaw and a completely unimpressed expression plastered across his face. oh. that was max verstappen.
"well" she said after a horribly silent pause "that's embarrassing..." max's expression became even flatter if somehow possible "you think?"
"i didn't do it on purpose" she adds quickly "that makes it better" he replies dryly.
she blinked once before raising an eyebrow in thought "you're even grumpier in real life" she remarks. a few people in the garage watching the scene unfold choke back laughter but max looked mildly offended by her comment.
"and you" he adds in that same dry tone, pausing for a second "are standing in a formula one garage wearing heels and spilling coffee."
she glanced down at the puddle of coffee and ice at max's feet before her gaze flickers to her shoes. before she could answer lauren appears next to her looking absolutely horrified.
"oh my god" lauren mutters out, the words coming out more as a whisper "what did you do?"
"she assaulted me with coffee" max said.
"it was an accident" yn defends immediately.
lauren looked as if she was seconds away from passing out "i'm so sorry, max."
max kept his eyes on her instead. not lauren. her.
for a moment, she expected him to continue glaring at her like she'd ruined his life. instead, his gaze flickered briefly over her face, lingering for half a second too long before exhaling audibly through his nose. "whatever" he muttered before turning away "just stay out of the garage" he adds before walking off.
