“It’s my hope for people watching that they still see Rue as a person worthy of their love. And worthy of their time, and that she has a redemptive quality still, and that we still see the good in her even though she can’t see it in herself. It’s important that we have characters that are flawed, and remember that we are not the worst mistake we’ve ever made. And that redemption is possible.” – Zendaya about Rue, 2022.

I really regret what I said to Ali. Reducing someone’s life to a moment… an ugly moment. And punishing them for it. That’s what cops do. It’s actually what everyone does. It’s what you would do to me if you didn’t know me.

KIRSTEN DUNST as AMY MARCH in LITTLE WOMEN (1994)
March sisters + hand-me-down dresses
An interesting costuming decision in the 1994 adaptation of Little Women was having the younger March sisters wear the elder sisters’ old dresses. At the Christmas party after her recovery from scarlet fever, Beth wears Jo’s red dress which she wore to the Gardiners’ New Years’ party a year prior. Years later, teenage Amy is seen wearing Meg’s old blue dress which she wore to Sallie Moffat’s coming out party. Considering that the Marches lived in genteel poverty, it was unlikely that they could afford new clothes for all four children, so it would make sense that the younger sisters wore hand-me-downs. The choices also reflect the sisters’ bond: Beth is closer to Jo, while Amy is closer to Meg.

Meg was Amy’s confidant and monitor, and by some strange attraction of opposites Jo was gentle Beth’s. The two older girls were a great deal to one another, but each took one of the younger sisters into her keeping and watched over her in her own way, ‘playing mother’ they called it, and put their sisters in the places of discarded dolls with the maternal instinct of little women.

Jo was the first to wake in the grey dawn of Christmas morning. No stockings hung at the fireplace, and for a moment she felt as much disappointed as she did long ago, when her little sock fell down because it was crammed so full of goodies. Then she remembered her mother’s promise and, slipping her hand under her pillow, drew out a little crimson–covered book. She knew it very well, for it was that beautiful old story of the best life ever lived, and Jo felt that it was a true guidebook for any pilgrim going on a long journey. She woke Meg with a “Merry Christmas,” and bade her see what was under her pillow. A green–covered book appeared, with the same picture inside, and a few words written by their mother, which made their one present very precious in their eyes. Presently Beth and Amy woke to rummage and find their little books also, one dove–coloured, the other blue, and all sat looking at and talking about them, while the east grew rosy with the coming day.
