ALICIA.

The excitement was truly kicking in now that the e ceremony was only a few minutes away. Everything was ready, everyone was dressed up and ready to go, and all the snapshots they needed were taken. So Alicia asked to have some moments to herself, enough to wrap her head around the fact that her and Ben were doing this again. How people celebrating with them today had no idea that they were so close to losing it all a year ago, and today they were celebrating the fact that they managed to pull through.

When she heard the door open behind her to reveal Aksel, Alicia turned around to greet her with a smile. “Thank you darling. You look amazing yourself,” she added. Alicia looked at the box curiously, taking it in her hand and opening it slowly to reveal the beautiful bangle inside it. “Aksel! Wow. This is so beautiful.” And as Aksel told her the significance of the bangle she felt the tears well up in her eyes. “I love it so much. I’m so honored you gave this to me,” she admitted before pulling Aksel into a tight hug.

Aksel gave a short playful spin for the bride- vow renewal or wedding, a bride was precisely what she was. Aksel felt her chest lighten to know Alicia was happy with the gift. It had been important to her to give this bangle to someone she knew would not only value it as a piece of Aksel's culture but who meant a great deal to her personally. Growing up, she never had a good relationship with her own mother- the woman knew how to disappoint, but Alicia gave Aksel plenty to look up to and admire, so when she suggested to her sisters that they gift this one to Alicia, there was no hesitation. All the Polat girls agreed, this bangle belonged to Alicia. Pulling back from the warm embrace Aksel dabbed under her eyes, "I'm gonna ruin my make up before the vows." She playfully complained while looking Alicia over with pure admiration. "It's beautiful, what you and Ben have." Aksel spoke sincerely, "I hope I have something one day that endures decades like you guys."

“You’re telling me. My last place was a fucking shit show compared to this.” Milo grunted, returning to the couch with a bag of chips in one hand and two bottled beers in the other. “You can still give me a gift, gorgeous.” He quipped in return, playfully winking at Aksel as he handed over one of the beers. Milo slugged down a gulp of the cold beverage, leaning back to rest against the cushions on his couch. He swung his legs up to settle on the coffee table, glancing over at Aksel with furrowed brows. “The fuck is West Elm? Is that another rich person thing?” Milo jested, reaching over to teasingly tickle his fingers against the brunette’s waist. “Why not both? Chocolate and strawberries are natural aphrodisiacs, you know?”

Aksel hadn't minded his first place in the slightest. It had character or whatever it was that was innately different. Maybe it was that houses like this one reminded her of her once upon-a-time life that was so far gone now it barely felt like her own. She wondered what Milo did to move up drastically from one place to this show of wealth. She hadn't asked yet, but her brows quirked curiously at him as she took the beer, thankful for something cold and fizzy. "The gift of my company good enough?" She asked, returning his flirtatious wink with a knowing look. Her head lulled back a genuine laugh as his fingers danced over her sides. Aksel was painfully ticklish, sensitive to most touch. Her cheeks flushed, and she narrowed a look of mock warning his way, "You can't live in a place like this and not know what West Elm is, Milo." She playfully reprimanded, "It's practically the rules." She slumped, rolling her eyes and throwing her legs over his lap. She laughed warmly, "Like you need the help." Her eyes scanned the place once more, "I'll bring a cake next time. Strawberry and chocolate." She said as an afterthought before landing back on his face. "What's your secret, babe? How'd you swing this place?" The market was notoriously competitive and ruthless not to mention expensive, and Aksel couldn't help but want to know the ins and outs of how he made this happen while she herself was straddling the threat of eviction month to month.

ATLAS.

He wasn’t uncomfortable, despite most faces in the crowd being new to him. He was charismatic man who could make friends anywhere he went and the night of the vow renewal was no exception. In fact, his newest friend was a doctor at Providence Peak. He was a friend of Bennett’s and had spoke highly of the man before and after the ceremony. After a few rounds at the bar, Atlas had found comfort in a table and some finger food. If he were going to keep drinking, he needed to eat something more than a couple of grapes. The male’s brow lifted when the seat next to him was pulled back and occupied by someone he hadn’t seen the whole night. Granted, there was so much happening that it was easy to get lost in the sea of people moving around, dancing and mingling to the beat of the music.

“You look ridiculous,” he countered childishly, feeling as if it were the most clever statement he could muster. Dark hues dropped to his chest as she smoothed out the material of his shirt. It was probably from when he’d poorly tucked it in after needing a break. “Come on, just a little better? We had this thing tailored and everything. I had to stand there while this dude poked pins in and shit. Kept telling me that I had an expressive wing span and that it’s been awhile since he’s had to work with someone my height.” He’d used a step stool and everything, but Atlas had played along for the sake of looking nice for the night. He inhaled sharply the moment her fingers curled around his hand. Just the memory of the night left him rolling his eyes and scoffing. “An old friend wanted something that belonged to me. I wouldn’t give it up and apparently we’re fuckin’ five again,” he explained, leaving out a ton of details for the sake of his sanity. “Bad, I guess? Not kinky if that’s what you’re asking.”

Aksel pushed his shoulder, "This dress is brand new." She commented, swiveling her head to see if the tag had poked out as she had planned to return it after the event. "Can you see the price tag?" She asked lowly, a laugh in her tone. There had been a time over a decade ago when a two-hundred-dollar dress was nothing but a drop in the bucket. Still, with remodeling the record store and the twins constantly needing money for school functions, Aksel was strapped and seriously considering a second gig. "An expressive wing span?" Aksel repeated questioningly, her eyes scanning over his shoulders, "Are you a fucking bat?" She teased, knowing full well what the tailor had meant. "I get it. When Kennedy looks as good as she does, you have to try at least." Aksel laughed, stole a few pretzels from his appetizer plate, and popped them back. "Maybe the guy was hitting on you." She suggested, "Something about a tall man makes people feral." "A friend?" She scoffed, "I'm going to need more details than that, Williams." She narrowed her eyes on his face wondering if Kennedy had noticed the little bruise on his hand. "I mean, kinky is one thing, Atlas, but someone biting you over a thing?" She clicked her tongue against the back of her teeth, the memory of snapping her teeth at Dom just a few days prior, but she hadn't bit him- not yet, nor would she really call him a friend. "Are they here tonight?" She asked scanning the crowd and nodding towards a random person, "They look like a biter. I could get Halis to put laxatives in their wine if you wanna meet immaturity with more immaturity."

TYLER.

The suggestion that Tyler should follow back up on her question later brought a raise of her brow. In the months since they’d broken up there hadn’t really been any contact at all between them. They didn’t text, they didn’t talk, they didn’t see each other outside of the rare occasions that they happened to bump into each other. There was something about the idea that perhaps they could get back to a point where they saw each other on purpose that brought a spark of something to Tyler’s chest. “You don’t get to argue when I ask later. You just totally have to tell me,” she commented back with a very slight nod, fully planning to hold Aksel to that. As soon as the candy was mentioned, one of Ty’s hands snaked over towards the purse to start feeling around for it. She wasn’t typically a candy person, but there was something comforting about the sugary sweetness of it when she was feeling as knocked down as she was. Though she was holding it together on the outside, on the inside she was craving that small sense of comfort. “I like that better. You owing me,” Ty answered back with a slight smile as she dropped her hand into Aksel’s to take the candy, fingers brushing up against Aksel’s for a brief pause before she pulled back away.

She was glad for the distraction of opening the candy wrapper as she heard her name drop out of Aksel’s lips. The woman’s tone spoke volumes more than a simple word otherwise could have and Ty felt her stomach drop out of her. She’d always known that her career and the damage it did to her health was something that would catch up with her in some form or another. When she’d been younger and single, it hadn’t really mattered. Taking on the world and living in the moment with no regard for the future had been a simple way to live. Aksel was the first person that had ever changed that for her. The first person to make her stop and think that maybe she didn’t want to lose herself, that maybe there was something else to stick around for. That, more than anything, had terrified Tyler. After spending her life shunning the idea of having a future and just accepting that it would be what it would be, she’d worried that perhaps it was too late to build a future with Aksel. If the future wasn’t going to be there for her, how could it be there for them?

There was a palpable shift in the car after Tyler spoke, a silence that stretched just a touch too long. With her eyes covered, she didn’t see Aksel’s expression, but she felt it. Reaching over, Ty let a hand drop to Aksel’s knee, brushing her thumb against it comfortingly for a moment. “You know, going into a career like this, you can’t…you just can’t think about it, about dying. You can’t be afraid or you won’t be good,” Tyler started to say, her words coming slowly as she worked herself through the emotions of where the conversation had turned. “And I never was scared, I never gave a second thought to worrying about a future. Not until I met you. I wish I could make some promise that it won’t ever take me out or hurt me, but I can’t. What I do is dangerous and it always will be.” There wasn’t anything Tyler could say to assuage Akel’s worries. In all likelihood, this would probably end up killing Tyler one way or another. Whether it was swiftly in the ring or years down the line with the after effects of her injuries, Tyler was too far in to escape unscathed. Her body shifted so she could look out the window as they pulled into the gas station, her lips pursed together with thought. “Um, just home is fine, though. The dogs will make sure I’m good.”

Aksel didn't believe Tyler would reach out again, but she had hope. It was a slight flutter of something she wanted to squash. If only to avoid the disappointment when what she hoped for and what reality was did not coincide. "I promise if you ask later, I'll tell you anything you want to know," Aksel replied, confident later would never come and that she could keep a few things to herself. "I'll even pinky promise if you want." She said, extending her pinky out with a small smile on her lips. It felt like a safe bet she knew Tyler, but only in the way, you could know something fleeting. Like a shooting star, she knew it here when she saw her, knew she was captivating but not the most predictable. Usually, it broke her heart, but maybe it could be in her favor once. Aksel's fingers briefly curled against Tyler's, an innate reflex to comfort her and be comforted by her- she'd missed her. Even before she'd gone, Aksel missed her. She was constantly counting down the moments until things turned sour again. Until another cruel comment, another fight. She had thought that ending things with her, that would save her the suffering of this unpredictable back and forth with Tyler. All it had done was allow her to pretend she didn't care in the between moments that came and went as quickly as blinking. Even if she wasn't with her, she cared about her. She cared about what she thought, said, and felt. Sometimes it was exhausting. Other times she felt like it was all she'd ever know. Her eyes dropped to Tyler's hand, and before she could think better of it, she dropped one of her hands on top of hers, curling her fingers around her palm as she listened to her speak. She wanted what Tyler was saying to soothe the worry that gripped her but as soft and needed as her words were, Aksel could not lay her fears to rest. Unshed tears swam at the brim of her eyes while she listened to Tyler speak of her career and all the sacrifices and risks you take to be great. "You are great." Aksel strained to keep her voice level. Tyler was amazing at what she did, Aksel had no doubt, and when she was good, it was like being above it all, untouchable and full of swelling pride. There was no doubt about it, but moments like this reminded her of Tyler's mortality that left the sinking sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. Thinking of the danger and what if of what Tyler put herself through had been the source of countless anxiety nightmares and waking fears she couldn't seem to shake. Aksel squeezed her hand, pulling it up. She gently pressed her lips to Tyler's palm. The show of affection was all she could offer when no words would do, because despite understanding it all Aksel still hated the risks Tyler took each time she stepped into the ring. "Your dogs can't call 911 Tyler." She pointed out, "I'll stay with you." She said, "Do you have any snacks?" She asked as she pulled out of the gas stations parking lot, "if not I can stop and get us something."

ELENA.

The way Aksel asked just any hands made Lena, momentarily, wonder if she knew. It was impossible though. Lena had told no one. She was inherently private. Even in the beginning when her feelings were just feelings and not contempt for another relationship. She just shrugged in response. Lena didn’t need to give anyone any ideas about her inspiration before she spoke about it to the muse himself.

“Tequila shots.” Lena answered at the same time Aksel ordered with the bartender. The girls probably had a lot more in common than the liquor they drank, but until tonight they’d never been just one on one to figure it out. She looked forward to the possibility of that changing. “To being the hottest girls here.”

Aksel clinked her shot glass against Elena's, and before she realized it, one shot had turned into three and four, and after that, Aksel didn't dare count. She'd spent the time between shots chatting with Elena telling her about the vinyl countdowns remodel. "I have a great idea!" Aksel exclaimed as another round of shots was lined up in front of them. Her cheeks were flushed with the liquor, and she spoke slower, her tongue feeling slightly heavier in her mouth. She was feeling good, and still, her train of thought was all over the place. "Well, two good ideas." Aksel said, her head tilted towards the bar's appetizer menu on a small tripod, "Snacks." She said, tossing her shot back, "Cheese fries or jalapeno poppers?" She asked Elena.

Then remembering her original train of thought, she ordered herself water for future Aksel. She commented and turned her body towards Elena with a warm smile. "The Vinyl countdown it's a little dated. Hank," the man who had owned it opened it and given it to her, "he had not the best tastes but I'm going to paint it. I'm going to make Atlas paint it." She said it was a part of his apology tour, one she insisted he didn't need to do, but one she was thankful for all the same. "But you know what would put it over the top?" She asked her eyes raking over Elena, "You." She said, "What do you think about painting a mural behind the register maybe? You could do whatever you want and I'd pay whatever your commission is-" Aksel added, "What do you think?"

For a woman who complained about being single, Aksel had a bit of a distaste for being set up on a date. Especially by her twin younger sisters, who had poor taste in romantic partners. She'd think she'd be safe at a wedding, but Pasha and Esra were shameless in their attempts, even if the guys' only promising trait was a 'dazzling smile.' Currently, Aksel was hiding inside the venue kitchens popping grapes between her lips on the counter, when she heard footsteps. A woman followed. Mid chew, she offered an awkward smile, "Rosie said I could hang out here." She made some excuse mid chew of her grapes. Holding out the bowl, "Want some? They're good vineyard and all."

Unbecoming as it was she did her best to mask her personal feelings on love with her unwaivering happiness for the couple. She was doing well as she didn't need to pretend to be happy for Ben and Alicia, it came natural to smile and enjoy the evening between the twisting in her gut. At least it had been until she quite literally ran into Leo. "We've gotta stop meeting like this." Aksel teased despite herself, rubbing her arm as she avoided eye contact with the man, "Are you okay? No wine spillage?" She asked finally bringing her eyes up to his face with a forced smile.

Aksel had learned a long time ago that she could find Atlas Williams in any crowded room, mostly because he was always bound to be the tallest person there and maybe in part due to all the things she often left unsaid, and for a good reason. A reason she was reminded of when she spotted a man she'd just been out with on a date with the mother of his child. For months four words from the mouth of Kennedy had been a dull echo ever present, sometimes amplified, you don't stand a chance. She had meant in terms of Atlas, but it somehow continued to ring true in all facets of her life. Aksel Polat simply could not measure up. Not with Ever or Tyler, not with her parents, it seemed, not with anyone. Everyone had a person, and maybe it was the emotion of a wedding making her feel lonely and sorry for herself, or maybe it was realizing she'd done it again, tangled herself, no matter how briefly, with another emotionally unavailable person. Drowning her pity with a glass of white wine, Aksel found Atlas, pulling a chair close to sit beside him. Her eyes were still on the pair when she sat down with a humorless laugh. With a shake of her head she turned her attention to Atlas, an easy smile falling into place. Her body angled towards him as she sat down her wine and adjusted his tie. He looked quite handsome. "You look ridiculous, Wolfie." She teased the smile present in her voice even if it didn't quite reach her eyes. Then, smoothing the fabric straight, "That's a little better." She claimed as she sat back, looking around the venue with a pang spreading through her chest she wanted this one day, maybe not a wedding, but the endless love sounded nice. Still, Aksel found it hard to shake the echo of words, you don't stand a chance. Blinking hard, she exhaled and turned her attention back to Atlas, opening her mouth to complain, when her eyes fell to his hand and saw a bruise clearly from teeth. Eyes blown wide, Aksel grabs his hand, "What the fuck happened to you?" She whispered, turning over his hand to inspect it more closely, "Good or bad?" she asked as an afterthought

MILLER-GARCIA VOW RENEWAL - before the ceremony

Aksel had a few minutes before the ceremony would begin and wanted to find Alicia. The small, modestly wrapped box in her hands, a gift from herself and her three youngest siblings, was something she wanted to give her before she walked down the aisle. Finding her wasn't hard. Knocking before entering the bride's suite, Aksel peaked to find she was alone. "Wow." She remarked a low whistle of appreciation following suit as she closed the door behind her. "You look drop-dead gorgeous." She said, admiring her done up for the day. Aksel blinked away a wave of happy tears.

Waving her hand, she gave a breathless laugh and dabbed under her eyes. "I came here for a reason. The kids wanted to come too, but I made them save good seats." Aksel held out the box, "It's from Halis, Pasha, Esra, and I- Ben already got his gift. I made sure Halis hand delivered it." Aksel explained, watching Alicia open the intricate 22k gold bangle that had been a part of a collection of bangled passed down from mother to daughter for years. "Each of my sisters and I have one, but this one belonged to my great-great-grandmother." And eventually, it belonged to her mother, who had pawned it at one point, but Aksel kept that to herself. She'd repurchased it years ago, saving it for the right occasion. "And one day, you can pass it down too." Aksel beamed, showing Alicia how it unclasped to click back together.

TYLER.

The words brought a slow smirk to Ty’s lips, one eye peeking open over at Aksel as she let the sentiment sink in. “I always knew there was a lot you liked about me,” she commented back, taking the words and hearing what she wanted to hear out of them rather than the actual words that were said. Her eyes flashed shut again rather quickly as the car started to pick up speed. Even with her focus on Aksel, the shifting of the background behind her was enough to have a wave of nausea roll through her stomach again. Instead, it was easier to nestle her head against the back of the chair and just listen. “I’ll ah…I’ll buy you a new dress. As a thank you. It’ll be way prettier than whatever dress your sister stole,” Ty promised. It was the absolute bare minimum that she could offer as a thank you for Aksel coming to pick her up that night. She didn’t deserve Aksel coming to get her, yet there the woman was.

Feeling the car roll to a stop, Ty looked back up, just catching Aksel’s look as she started to speak again. Her body deflated a bit, any real fight for the night knocked out of her hours ago. “It’s…I’m not trying to belittle it, I just know it…it could have been worse, so this isn’t so bad,” Ty shrugged. It was an athlete’s mentality. Keep pushing until everything in you was broken. Never show pain. Never show weakness. It was how she’d had to live her entire life to get where she was and it was no easy feat to stop it now. She was grateful that she was able to let her eyes sink back closed with the car resuming movement, as the next question felt like a punch to the gut. It was a question that had lingered unspoken for months, years perhaps for Tyler. Teeth grinding against each other, Ty wasn’t sure how to even answer it. “I don’t know. Wish I had a good answer,” she admitted with a slow shrug of her shoulders. Would it be one more bad hit? Two? A dozen? The experts didn’t know, Tyler didn’t know. All she knew was that she was playing with borrowed time and tempting fate every time she stepped back into the ring.

“Not sure there would be much of a me left if I quit either way. This is my life, Aks. I don’t want to get hurt, but I can’t just let it go either,” she added after a long sigh. It was something Ty had grappled with for awhile. Who was she without MMA? Building up her career had been her singular focus for so long that a life without it felt like it would just be…empty.

"At least your mental faculties seem to be firing well." Aksel teased, her eyes scanning Ty's face for any signs of something else being wrong. Chewing her bottom lip, Aksel shrugged, "Asks me about the list when you feel better. Maybe I'll tell you all the things." Part of her wanted to see if Tyler would remember or if her injuries had hurt her in more irreparable ways. Still, another part hoped for a reason to talk to her again. How could she not? She had loved Tyler in a way she had convinced herself could survive anything, even doubt, even emotional distance. The heartbreak of realizing she'd been wrong was still with her, lingering around ever present and more painful when faced with reminders of maybe and what if. "There is candy in my purse." Reaching for the bag, instead of watching Ty struggle with it, Aksel went in and pulled out a jolly rancher, "It might help to suck on something sweet. Pasha gets car sick, and it helps her-" Aksel's train of thought fell off, "You don't need to buy me a dress. It's okay. You got me out of a fight with my sister. If you really think about I owe you." She holds out her palm with the candy, "It's a green apple. The best flavor." Aksel's grip tightened, and she shook her head and kept her voice low, "Tyler." Her name was a plea out of desperation built from the months of watching the adverse side effects of Tyler's job. She couldn't do it forever. It was chipping away at her piece by piece. Aksel saw it, suspected it the night she showed up drunk at her apartment and a few times since then, but had never, not even when they were together, been able to convince Tyler to slow down before she ran right out of her skin and into a future that she couldn't heal from. Tyler answered precisely in the way Aksel had expected, and it shattered something so deeply profound that the next breath she took shook past her lips, followed by a silence that did not come easy. The lump that had made a home at the bottom of her throat burned each time she considered opening her mouth to speak. The threat of tears so real that all Aksel could do was focus on the road ahead, blinking slowly each time her vision blurred with unshed tears. A few minutes later, she realized she was driving the path to her apartment. She hadn't even asked Ty where she would like to go, and for the moment being, Aksel wasn't sure where she wanted to go either. "At this rate, it's not the risk of getting hurt, Tyler." Aksel finally spoke, clearing her throat of emotion as she did. "I'm afraid you're going to die from this." She admitted, shame coloring her cheeks as she swatted at her face to stop the roll of tears from making themselves known. She was quiet a moment longer, "I've watched you get hurt for a long time now, and I you get back up and amaze me. But I can't tip toe around the fact that there is no recovery in losing you like that." Aksel explained and pulled off into a gas station, "I never asked where I'm taking you." She looked over to her, "Where do you want to go, Emmy's?"

ELENA.

“Some men, yeah.” There was one she held out hope for, but that was likely in vain. Lena just didn’t know it yet. There wasn’t much else she had to say on the topic. For Lena, issues in love and sex spun across multiple genders. She didn’t seem to have luck with one over any other and faulted them all for what she’d call human issues. “Maybe that’s why I like to draw them.” It was a quiet revelation but none the less true.

At first Lena didn’t answer Aksel’s question, but after she called her one right swipe a player, Lena put the phone down and held up her glass to the bartender. “Another one, please.” If nothing else went her way, Lena was committed to having a fun, and inevitably sloppy, night out.

"Some people." She answered in turn. There was a lot to be said about it, so much so that Aksel's head buzzed with tales of her own woes in love. More so lately than it had been in a while, but when it rains- it pours. At least it felt that way. Aksel had never been gifted when it came to drawing. Basics were as far as she got. It was one of Lena's talents that made her social media presence interesting to follow. "Just any hands?" She asked, her curiosity piqued with what may as well have been a throwaway comment. Aksel's eyes swept away from Lena's face when she laid down her phone. She nodded towards the bar, just in time for her drink to arrive a moment later. "Do you like shots?" Aksel asked with a shrug. Whatever Lena was swiping for, Aksel wasn't sure and didn't think it was her place to ask. Still, in the off chance that Lena was looking to drink away her problems, Aksel was in no position to not encourage losing themselves to a night of fun. Pulling out her credit card, part of her thought she'd regret the charges later when responsibility slapped her with a hangover. Before she could talk herself out of it she slid the card across to the bartender. "Tequila?" It was her preferred, especially when she needed to numb her mind to the reality she could put off for at least a few hours.

TYLER.

It was a stupid place to pick a fight, Tyler knew that. Arguing with the person that had been kind enough to come all the way over to the hospital to pick her up was ridiculous, yet the urge to do so was still there. Her mouth opened for a moment, ready to shoot back some stupid argument, but she let the words fall short. Ty was trying to do better, trying to be nicer, and while it wasn’t something that came easily for her she at least was able to bite her tongue. Sighing softly, Ty nodded once, wincing at the motion before sitting up from the bench to walk over to the car. “Being stubborn is my best quality, though,” she protested weakly as she opened up the door to get in, not willing to completely let go the urge to be stubborn.

“No music, if that’s okay. They said I should keep um…quiet. Keep things quiet,” Tyler commented as she buckled in her seatbelt, lounging out as best as she could. She fell silent for a moment, her eyes closed as they started to pull out. The last thing she needed was to be watching out the window getting dizzier than she already felt, so she instead let her eyes flicker open and focus on Aksel. “Sorry if you were doing stuff,” Tyler piped up after a stretch of being quiet. She didn’t know what else to say, didn’t have a good explanation as to why Aksel was the one that was called. Whether it was an oversight on her part or just a piece of her ignoring that it needed to get changed because she was holding on to some last piece of their relationship, Tyler wasn’t sure. “It’s not that bad. My head, I mean. It was just a mishap at practice.”

Relief came the moment Ty was in the car. Aksel reached over her body, tugging the door shut and pulling the seatbelt across her body on her way back to her seat. "You have a few I prefer more than being obstinate," Aksel frowned. Watching her clearly in pain stirred discomfort inside Aksel. "Gotchya." She said, making sure the volume was all the way down before leaning over Ty's body to pull the door of Atlas's old borrowed jeep shut with a soft click. Aksel slid carefully back into her seat, pulling her seatbelt back over her chest before slowly pulling out of the parking lot. "I was fighting with my sister." She said with a flippant wave of her hand. "She keeps stealing my dresses, and they either don't come home or come home destroyed." But, Aksel explained, "it didn't matter." She added quickly, her eyes moving over to Ty's face. She wanted to tell Tyler that she mattered more, that she'd always come to help whenever needed. No matter what, she bit her tongue and kept her eyes focused on the road. There was a short beat where Aksel thought she'd have to drag answers out of Tyler, but in a surprising turn of events, Ty gave Aksel answers without any prompting. It was surprising enough she rolled to an early stop at a light to look over at her. "You have to stop doing that." She said, her voice thick with concern. "Belittling it every time you're hurt." Aksel gripped the stirring wheel, her attention so focused on Tyler that she'd missed the light turning green until someone honked. She cursed under her breath before moving along. "How many more mishaps do you have left before there is no you left?" Aksel asked the question that had been gripping her with fear for months, perhaps longer, she didn't expect Ty would answer outright, but she suspected no matter what the answer was not good.

ELENA.

Dark eyes a rich mahogany in hue stayed down, focused on her phone. It wasn’t that Lena didn’t want to talk to Aksel. They were friends of friends and friendly on most occasions, but she was invested in the recent download of a dating app. Now more than ever felt like the time to seek someone out. Someone she could distract herself with, in the least, and maybe more in the most. It certainly didn’t serve her to be in love with a married man or continue to sleep with said man’s best friend.

While she didn’t look up to see Aksel’s hand demonstration of what it was that men tended to do in the bedroom she fully understood. Kind of sounded like they’d fucked some of the same people, and with how fucking messy her life was Lena wouldn’t have been surprised. “I always ask for pics of their hands. They think its a dick size thing, but..” She momentarily trailed off, finding someone eye sight worthy of a right swipe. “..it’s something else..”

"Men are so caught up on the male gaze they miss what the people they're trying to get with are into," Aksel commented. She had theories about how many heterosexual men were more into impressing other men than the women they claimed to be interested in, the women they claimed to love. However, it was a lot to unpack over drinks, so Aksel decided against it. She and Lena were, after all, friend adjacent, a thing Aksel had hoped to bridge as she admired Lena's work and always enjoyed any time they were together. "Hands are better than dick pics." Aksel agreed, her digits flexing as a pair of hands came to mind.

Too bad they belonged to a rude man who sometimes she wanted to strangle. Aksel said, crossing her ankles and ordering another titos and water with lime. "Want anything? She asked before finishing the order and spinning her attention toward Lena, "He's a player, but honest about it." Aksel commented unable to have missed the face of the man she'd swiped on moments before.

MARKUS.

It’d been a long time since Markus has gone on a first date. After his engagement fell to shambles he chose to, primarily, focus on work. Then he moved again for his residency, which proved more daunting a task than he’d ever anticipated. The program pushed him, and he did little more than a string of one night stands with women whose numbers he never even saved. It wasn’t like him, to say the least, but it was a chapter in his life. This felt like a new one, even in an old setting with familiar face.

The drive to Aksel’s was short, but not as short as it’d once been. He didn’t honk but got out of the car to greet her at the door. Her dog seemed the most excited, and he pet her before leading Aksel to his jeep. Where they were going had yet to be disclosed, and he was starting to wonder when she’d ask about the time she finally did. “Hints?” He would’ve flat out told her had she asked, but a senseless trail of hints seemed more amusing. “Rocks…dirt… air..” He was grinning in the dark of the vehicle’s cab, already speading towards the edge of town. “..little cucumber sandwiches..” He wasn’t joking but laughed. “Any guesses yet?”

Aksel's romantic life had been a string of dates since the end of her relationship with Tyler. Unfortunately, most of them had been little more than distractions in the healing process from the ache that had come when she ended things with Tyler. However, there had been a few that meant a little more than just a fling that even then finished in a bad way, a way Aksel didn't want to rehash now. Now all she wanted to do was slip her hand out the jeep window to curve along the wave of wind while turning her attention to Markus; this date was a lot different than her usual bar finds and tinder hookups. Markus was an old friend. It was easy to say yes to him to let him take the lead on this date with rocks, air, dirt, and "Little cucumber sandwiches?" She smiled and tilted her head towards him, "Sounds delicious. And like it'll be outside?" She asked, "A picnic?" Aksel asked. An inflection of excitement came with the question. She couldn't recall the last time she had done something so unabashedly innocent. It was dark outside, but Aksel knew the direction they were driving. She knew the roads like the back of her hand. For a brief moment, she peered out the window, the stretch of the sky becoming brighter the further from the city they got, "I can see a little bit of the Sagittarius constellation." She pointed as the sky moved by overhead. Settling back into the seat next to him, "I used to be able to chart all the stars. When I was a kid, before-" Before her dad went to prison and stained their lives. "We'd go on girls weekend, my sisters mom and me into these fancy cabins in Bighorn Hills and whoever could identify the most stars in the shortests time won." Aksel explained, her head against her shoulder as she spoke.
