ABOUT
Born the second oldest in an insanely wealthy family that resided in Summit Lake. Her father was endlessly busy and turned most of his attention to his sons with his antiquated opinions on gender roles. Aksel's mother was perfectly content living her life as a homemaker/trophy wife.
Aksel's father's life was private, his business even more so, privy only to his associates who came at all hours of the night and her eldest brother. After all, he was being prepared for the day he, too, would join the family business. Aksel's mother spent her time imparting her wisdom onto her daughters, modeling for them the ways of the divine feminine and a life of worldly luxury.
Aksel and her sister were kept busy with all life had to offer, lessons in French, Spanish, German, music lessons, dance lessons, equestrian, fencing, and more. When they weren't being rounded into talented and intelligent women, they were attending galas and brunches and traveling with their mom. However, Aksel was never contented with what she was given. She notoriously coveted the things hidden under her nose and wanted nothing more than to be let in on her dad's boys club.
Often caught with her ear pressed to his office door, sneaking about and trying to uncover his secrets. Picking the lock when he began locking his home office and finding herself in trouble for it every time. Aksel eventually pieced together that whatever her father was up to was illegal. It didn't stop her from wanting to know, all because she was told no.
However, before she satiated her young curiosity, her entire life was upended at just fifteen years old. The FBI came with a warrant, and in one long afternoon, her whole life was swept away, and her father was facing a heavy prison sentence. Aksel attended every court hearing only to uncover the truth of her father's crimes, of the life he thought her gender made her too soft for, unfit to know.
Aksel watched as the case was made. Every crime her father committed laid bare; bribery, counterfeiting, economic espionage, embezzlement, money laundering, and capital murder. The latter, of which the prosecution failed to prove without a doubt. However, Aksel knew in her heart he was more than capable. Alp Polat was facing twenty-five to life, a sentence he could have made lighter if he turned over his associates. He never did.
After everything was taken from them, Aksel's pregnant mother moved herself and her children out to the outskirts of town to Bighorn Hills. The changes began a landslide that the Polat family would never fully recover from. Birthing twin daughters that became the responsibility of Aksel and her older siblings was just the first of many of Beyza Polat's offenses. Without the distractions that came with luxury, Aksel began to notice her mother's sharp edges, her flaws glaring and often turned on her children as time passed. Beyza couldn't be counted on much, but what she was known for left a stain that Aksel never forgave. Volatile fights, binge drinking, and neglect added up to resentment that festered as more and more was put on Aksel's plate.
She escaped when she could with her job at The Vinyl Countdown. Her mentor there gave her the space and tools to practice piano, write songs, and dream. As well as an extra income to help take care of her siblings that felt more like her responsibility. Especially after her eldest brother abandoned them just three years into navigating the new normal.
Aksel knew she wanted more for herself but constantly put her dreams on the back burner to care for her family. All the money she made went into her family's upbringing and paying her mother's bar tabs and fines for various offenses. Selling songs she wrote became her private release, a way to express all she couldn't say aloud; there was a lot. There was joy in hearing her lyrics on the radio. Knowing she was good enough to be heard kept Aksel writing and making extra money whenever the record shop wasn't enough to pay the bills.
In 2020 her mentor passed away, leaving ownership of The Vinyl Countdown to Aksel. The little shop was her safe place growing up, and the first thing she owned since she was fifteen was solely hers. She is incredibly proud of it and is constantly working to improve it and make it more welcoming. Including music lessons and open mic nights, as she makes the place everything she always wanted it to be.
