There seems to be a misconception flying around that R!Ciel plans to crush the Funtom Company for the sake of his own train investments etc.

This ⬆️is INACCURATE!

R!Ciel praises his brother for his ingenuity and admits he judged his little brother wrong.

“In order to make up for the decline in land rent, he took proactive measure to start his business. I myself might instead have invested in railway or communication business, I believe.”

Dear everyone, there seems to be an misunderstanding.

Sorry that it was not clear enough, but judging by this specific page alone (without prior context), R!Ciel only SURMISED what he would have done instead if he were the one who survived. Rather than starting a toy company to compensate for the decline in land rent, R!Ciel would have invested in railways and communication business instead.

He did NOT say that he was NOT going to crush Funtom Company. (I mean, he might still).

As for the part where R!Ciel instructs Tanaka after he asked: “What will you do with the commodities (the bunnies) here?” (こちらの商品はどうなさいますか？ Kochira no shouhin wa dou nasaimasu ka) R!Ciel replied “Deal with them as you see fit.” (適当に処分しておいてくれ. Tekitou ni shobun shiteoite kure.)

Shobun here is usually meant and therefore translated as ‘dispose’. The exact meaning of this word in Japanese however, remains more or less vague. So regardless of whether Tanaka stores the bunnies away in a shed, or incinerates them, he would have carried the instruction out perfectly.

Though the bunnies here of course represent all of Funtom Company, R!Ciel (as far as we know) has not (yet) given any instruction about destroying the company. Explicitly, R!Ciel simply wants his doorway to not be swamped by plushes, which is legit.

As Tanaka was not given explicit order to “destroy the Funtom Company”, he is still left with a lot of leeway to “deal with the [commodities] as he sees fit”.

Judging from the fact that Tanaka has been employed as the Watchdog’s butler, we can safely assume he is more than a simple-minded yes-man. Most definitely, Tanaka’s loophole-digging skills/urges are not as strong as Sebastian’s (who is just an obtuse Trash Demon™), I personally don’t think Tanaka would take any measures to crush Funtom Company if he did not receive explicit order.

Though he serves ‘the true Earl Phantomhive’, Tanaka also deeply cares and is also loyal to O!Ciel.
