Icewings used to only be seen during the southerners winter (which is their summer) , when they traveled down to trade. Now, their soldiers are a common sight on the battlefield. It’s already a deeply miserable experience for them to be unseasonally down south, and it’s only made worse by having to deal with how confusing southern dragons are and having to fight a war for another Queen.

The black circles on their forehead are their pedicles (many southerners don’t understand that their antlers fall off, since *they* all have horns. Seeing soldiers nowadays with no antlers comes across like someone broke them off lol.) Icewings are fairly unnerving to southerners too, being very vocal and up close and personal.

Whenever they're doing anything quick and strenuous, they normally keep clothing to a minimum. For extended time outside, they'll clothe up!

Icewings mostly live in the far northern forests, where there are long winters and lots of snow. Their coloration helps them blend in with the dead brush, or in the trees above. Polar Icewings are naturally all white, while the boreal guys only get that look from shaving. They cover their wings under the long feathers that hang from their back and tail, which helps prevent the long thin limbs from getting too cold (the wings themselves have a feather coat too for extra protection when extended). Their paws have thumbs aren’t super great at manipulating objects, so they tend to use their little wing hands.

Icewings’ long legs make them fast runners. They usually hunt in groups, with some flying overhead while others run on the ground, or hunt solo using the element of surprise and speed. Long flights are hard for them, so they normally intersperse their flying with running when traversing their large territories.

hi! Here’s icicle!

I wanted to do a redesign specifically from the segments of winter turning where icicle is by the volcano, and took a lot of inspiration from glaciers with lines of volcanic ash in them because it felt appropriate. Even though she wasn’t there for very long, I think the ash and fire would’ve drained the color out of her scales a little: so she appears more gray than she’s supposed to be in this redesign. I usually talk a lot more about these pieces, but I actually want to try seeing what you guys think of them today!

As for your other questions, a request usually takes anywhere from 1-3 hours depending on how much trouble I have with it. And I don’t really think much about my line art when I’m doing it, so I’ll probably come back to that one later with a tutorial or something! As always, the box is open to your requests and my pinned post has all previous designs, tutorials and resources I use! I also have that base pack now!

Given that their blood is deep blue, and this is from when Icicle is unwell and increasingly injured, her wings remind me of blotted sclera.

I will never get over how (1) the Wings of Fire books decided all its main characters couldn’t be older than seven, (2) an entire dragon can be fed off of a tiny lizard as the only meal for a day, (3) the only real affection is between datemates and parents/children, (4) the seven year olds open a SCHOOL FOR FRIENDSHIP.

THE BASEMENT CHILDREN OPEN A SCHOOL FOR FRIENDSHIP, WHYYYYYYYY?

Could they not think of a better contrivance for panspecies interactions??? They all could’ve lived in the bispecies rainforest to help in their sister, Glory’s, rule.

Moon: No. Why?

Turtle, thoughtfully: Well, I was eating lunch with Peril last week and she called me that - a wet sponge. It's been on my mind.

[Peril: Hey Turtle, You're kind of like a wet sponge. Y'know? You just splish-splosh everywhere..]

Moon: Oh.. and that was upsetting you?

Turtle: Kind of - I don't know... maybe it was the tone.

Moon: Well, I don't think she meant it in a mean way. You guys are besties! I learned that word from Kinkajou - isn't it neat? Either way, you know Peril. She always says everything in the same tone of voice. It's just how she is! Maybe you should talk to her if you're upset.

[Peril: I hope Tamarin recovers soon.. // The Birthday decorations look better than winter... // I'm solving our animus problem..]

Turtle: It's not really Peril's fault - It's just... I was barely useful with my power, and now even that's gone too. What if something happens? I don't want you guys to get hurt, but I'm just.. well...

Moon: A wet sponge?

Turtle, humorously : Is this thing on?

Moon: If it makes any difference to you, I don't think you're a wet sponge - and I also don't think you're a useless dragon. Remember when I first told everyone about my powers? You were the only one who was nice to me - who accepted me - right away. I'll never forget that, turtle. And I think compassion will always be your real superpower.

[Turtle: 'I'll never forget that, turtle... I don't think you're a wet sponge...']

Began this short fan-comic back in 2023, one month before the finale aired. My goal was to finish the entire thing before uploading, however, my perfectionism ate me alive on this one. It became a sort of 'snake-eating-it's-own-tail,' wherein old pages I finished started to not look as good as the new, so I would go back to fix that...so on and so forth. Not to mention that one year after the show ended Dana confirmed backstory that totally deflated the crux of this fanfic, which discouraged me from working on it for some time.

Woof.

I've finally decided that if I don't start uploading this damn thing, it'll never see the light of day. So I'll be doing just that, beginning next week.
