Sleeping Around is My Secret Weapon
I once paid a very well renowned ayurvedic doctor almost $250USD to tell me I needed more sleep. My initial impetus to go see her were symptoms of fatigue, extreme anxiety, memory loss, brain fog, loss of appetite, etc. She gave me a few ayurvedic potions (for an additional fee) but she told me she couldn’t do anything for me if I didn’t get more sleep and take a chill pill. She told me that I absolutely must sleep a minimum of seven hours per night (8 or 9 was what she felt was optimal) and change my mindset.
This made me very upset. I told her she didn’t understand me. I told her I couldn’t possibly sleep more than five hours a night. I was in graduate school full-time during the day and working full-time at night. I am a spiritual warrior fighting night and day to bring an end to pain suffering and death! How can a woman rule the world and sleep more than 8 hours a night?!?!!!
She told me that I didn’t have to change my schedule but that I did have to change my approach. She advised me to look at my day one hour at a time. She also told me that if I were going to get less than seven hours of sleep per night I MUST take a nap.
So, I returned to my meditation practice and I started sleeping around. I took naps anywhere and everywhere. Some of my favorite places to nap were the DJ booth’s, dressing rooms, empty classrooms, recording studio booths, the subway (although I don’t advise this), park benches, cafeterias at work and school and anyone’s couch. Slowly but surely my energy skyrocketed, my skin started glowing and all my other symptoms started to subside.
Since graduation I get a lot more sleep. I still don’t always get 8 hours but I have truly fallen in love with the art of napping. During the week 15-20 minutes is usually all I can squeeze in. On weekends I’ll indulge myself with a 1-3 hour midday siesta. Power nap, coffee nap, disco nap...it’s all good napping to me.
Sweet Dreams and Happy Napping!
