Mount Qingcheng, China     中國青城山

Mount Qingcheng (pinyin: Qīngchéng Shān) is a mountain in Dujiangyan, Sichuan, China. It is the most important centers of Taoism in China. In Taoism mythology, it was the site of the Yellow Emperor’s studies with Ning Fengzhi. As a center of the Taoist religion it became host to many temples:

I visited Mount Qingcheng in 1991 when I was a temperamental baby student (i.e. 19 years old) doing Chinese studies in Sichuan. In fact I was specifically studying The Yellow Emperor’s Classic on Internal Medicine, a two thousand year old Chinese text on Taoist medicine and philosophy, for a class called “Chinese Medicine and the Balance of Forces”, when my class visited the sacred mountain, which I believe was not yet a World Heritage Site. Life experiences you never forget.
